ISO locked on K-x?

Hello, it's because you have highlight compensation on, turn it off to get the original ISO starting at 200 without expansion.

I'm not sure why it does that, can anyone explain the technical reasons for bumping up the iso to make a difference on highlights? I would think to reduce highlights the iso would go down.

Dismantling k100d viewfinder

Thanks for all the replies.

I had no idea those parts were so sensitive - I wish there was something mentioned in the user manual about cleaning do's and don'ts since this was my first dslr.

The image from the viewfinder is a bit hazy in some spots especially lights - should I just live with it instead of potentially making it worse if I assume the smudges are oil and try and get it off with a lenspen or something? Would a lenspen damage the mirror or outer viewfinder screen? I didn't press hard on the mirror because I was using the cloth to lightly brush off the dust so I'm guessing it's oil residue.

I'm getting a kx and certainly learned my lesson here. Has anyone experienced fungus on the viewfinder screen before? If not I guess it's scratches afterall.

Dismantling k100d viewfinder

Hi everyone,

I'm suspecting the viewfinder on my k100d is getting fungus growing on the inside of it. It appears as scratches but that shouldn't be possible as i've only ever used microfibre cloth and lenspen to clean it. I've used the camera while snowing and other times of wet weather.

When taking the eyecap off, i noticed 2 small screws on either side of the viewfinder. Has anyone had this problem and taken the first part of the viewfinder glass off to clean the inside? Do these small screws allow the outer glass to be removed?

On another similar note - the glass has colorful smudges on it which blurs the image through the viewfinder. The microfibre cloth I was using was a lens cleaning cloth. I also used it lightly on the inside mirror and now it has red smudges on it. Is it oil from the cloth or have I managed to take of some coating or something? Is that possible with rare light cleaning with microfibre?

Since they advertised the kx as having a timelapse feature they should include it in the next firmware.

KX Noise

I never saw that on my k100d. In RAW i've taken photos that were very dark from underexposure and processed it to reveal a very useable photo. I preferred that than use higher iso because i could expose the image later with lower iso with better noise. On occasion if it was too severely underexposed i'd get lines in the image so couldn't use those. I boosted shadows many times and they were perfect. I could do a bit of NR but in the example I showed it looks beyond saving with NR. It must be the way it applies the digital filter to try and add contrast to the shadows.

I'm assuming this is from pixel cramming then from 6mp to 12mp on the same size sensor, along with the heat caused by live view?

I still bought the kx anyway but it hasn't arrived yet. I think i'll use raw and try use iso100 as much as possible.

Has anyone who owns one noticed a severe deterioration of image quality from using LV? After how long? I guess it won't be a problem in winter in the northern hemisphere but I'll be using it in Australia mostly...

This is the (cropped) image I took in a store, showing the very grainy shadow detail at iso400 with shadow correction done in camera. With such a low noise camera you'd think you could get way better shadow correction especially at that iso. The original noise was finer with more color noise.

And a noisy video
IMGP5314.avi (24 MB)

I think this is all because the sensor got hot? I wasn't using it for long though.

Thanks for your replies.

I just used P mode. Can you explain how the shutter or aperture can contribute to noise if the ISO is say set to 200?

The k100d is super smooth at ISO200, I wonder if setting the kx to 6mp will help in terms of noise? I realised pixel cramming would contribute to deterioration of the image and wish megapixels wasn't such a hype.

UnknownVT, have you compared the kx and k100d side by side with the same manual settings, both set to 6mp and of the same scene? Does the larger pixel sites of the k100d show its strength by producing a slightly bright image in dimmer lighting?

The k100d was my first dslr and I remember being disappointed that my compact (Canon A510) would always produce much brighter images indoors with the same manual settings. I'm still confused about allocating set numbers to rating iso etc when the results can be so different camera to camera. Can anyone help my understand why?

By the way according to the manual live preview will reduce photo quality but I haven't heard the same for SR, and if video can be shot without live preview.

If you have a twitter account and are a photographer you could just write something about recommending the kx. Could help increase brand awareness and credibility a little bit more...

So glad they addressed the battery issue in the latest firmware update!

I haven't received mine yet so I'm not sure what I'd like in the firmware until I use it for a while, but I love the quality of SLR video so it would be great to address that.

Video improvements in order of importance:
  1. Select and fix sensitivity/ iso similar to aperture fix

  2. The green button can be assigned to start shooting video especially if keeping current settings or from digital preview

  3. Antialias Filter (should help fix moiré) but I assume reducing the sharpness or focus might help

  4. Select and fix shutter

  5. Selectable framerate ie 24p, 25p, 30p. I love 24p so this is no biggie but it could be an issue creating DVD's in your own country resulting in light flicker etc.

Stefan 16N64, if you are a firmware engineer do you think you are able to have a look at the latest release and see if you can make any of these wish list changes your self?

KX Noise

I tried out the KX in a store, and was surprised that contrary to all the excitement about its low noise, my photos were quite noisy even at ISO400. I thought that ISO200 was also alot noisier than my K100D! It was like comparing a compact with an SLR.

Also, when using the digital hdr for boosting shadows, they were very grainy and the whole thing was unusable. I thought a super low noise camera would be awesome for post improving dynamic range.

I later realised though that I was mostly using live view and seeing what settings worked in video, and read that the sensor can get hot and produce noise. I also had the shake reduction turned on for video.

So my question is if you want to take some videos while out then your photos will turn out noisy as a result?

Does anyone know if the SR will also make the sensor hot?

Can video be shot without live view?

Does anyone have any tricks for reducing the amount of noise on video? I remember one person saying for the nikon d90 they closed the aperture pointed at a bright light then opened the aperture again or something...

I know that it's not really a video camera but hey come on, it can take sweet looking video that's way better than HD camcorders IMO and that is worth playing with :)

Dropped FA 50mm f/1.4 - help fix!

Thanks again for the replies.

I'm not in the US. If it can't be fixed I'll have to use it as a manual lens :(

How long is warranty normally? I've had it for about 15 months.

Could anyone see any damage that I couldn't with the uploaded photo?

Does anyone know if it will still be useable on the k-x during video - setting the aperture manually for example?

Thanks very much for the replies :)

There is no visable damage that I can see, but is there anything visable to see when the aperture ring is set to A? The aperture blades still work and I can set it to A aperture but the camera doesnt recognise that, just has -- for the aperture info. It also asks what mm the lens is when the stabilisation is selected.

When turning the focus the little part for the af rotates too.

It really seems like something electrical inside it has been knocked out. Has anyone fixed the circuitry of a lens before? I'm assuming microchips shouldn't be damaged as it wasn't a great drop, just maybe something came loose.

The one thing I'm not sure about is that if I turn the aperture ring the full range, around the middle it's a bit stiff. I can't remember if it was like that before.

Apologies for the quality of the photo. The aperture ring is set to A.

Hello,

Today I dropped my most prized possession, my Pentax SMC FA 50mm f/1.4 lens.

Disappointingly, now the autofocus, auto aperture and stabilization doesn't work - it acts just like an old manual lens. So I obviously assume something happened to the circuitry.

Also disappointingly, the price as tripled since I bought it so I can't buy a new one.

I've seen people post instructions on DIY repair for slr lenses for canon - has anyone had any experience with this for pentax?

The lens wasn't dropped from a great height (about 30cm) and it still looks fine and undamaged. I'm hoping something just came loose which I can put back or solder or something.

I have a k100d. I was just about to sell but keep this lens for better video with the k-x I was going to buy. I was going to change brands reluctantly to canon or nikon until pentax released this fantastic k-x, which suits me perfectly considering I already had a lens collection for pentax, only now it's looks like there's no point since I broke this nifty fifty - the irony!
