Poll: Why did you buy a Pentax DSLR?

I bought the K10D because it was weather proofed. Original plan was to buy 16-50 and 60-250 lenses soon after, but I still don't have neither thus I don't have a weatherproof system. :(

Currently I can't afford to switch back to Canon so I'm pretty much stuck with my K10D hehe.

Potentially stupid tripod question

I, too, have an Amvon tripod and head. I don't have it here right now so I'm not sure about the model. Legs are pretty much their biggest carbon fiber model and the head is also biggest or second biggest.

Both the legs and head are absolute junk.

Very bad workmanship all over both of them. The head was full of metal shavings from the machining and the machined surfaces are very rough. The quick release plate doesn't fit the head properly and the camera wobbles when mounted.

One of the legs was loose when I got them and soon another leg fell off. I glued them back with epoxy.

After a couple of hikes one leg section became stuck and doesn't extend.

The rubber grips used to loosen/tighten the leg sections are becoming loose.

One of the locks used to control the angle of the legs fell off.

The soft foam paddings around the legs are becoming loose and will soon need to be glued back.

All in all I have nothing positive to say about my Amvona gear. Worst piece of kit I have ever owned. The leg/head combo is not sturdy nor light and falls apart with very little use.

Avoid.

Edit: forgot to add that the bubble levels aren't level or anywhere close.

Weather seals, how much can it take?

My K10D survived several hours of sailing in a thunder storm. I took countless direct hits from waves crashing over the boat as well as several hours of direct heavy rain on the camera.

The only problem was the water on the lens front element that ruined many pics.

My Amvona tripod and head are absolutely the worst piece of kit I have ever seen. Total waste of money.

Survey forecasts demand for weather-proof cams

I just tested my K10D after drying it for a day. After a little sailing in a thunderstorm my camera was as wet as if I had dipped it in the ocean. K10D never missed a beat.

I and my camera took at least a hundred direct hits from waves crashing over the boat and it was also raining heavily all the time.

Plenty of fun, but I was a bit worried about my DA 12-24 lens because it's not weather sealed, but the lens is fine.

Curious, who did not get a K20 and why?

Well I simply didn't see the K20D as much of an improvement over the K10D. More pixels yes, but thats about it.

Thank you for commenting everyone! :)

To Maxwell: I used AF all the time but it's not 100% accurate especially when using the focus points away from the center. Also it is very much possible that I accidentally focused to her hair etc. I'm not a pro at this. :D

This was her first shoot ever by the way. She was a bit shy at first but a couple of ciders and some red wine cured it.

Hello everyone!

A few pics from a short shoot with a friend a while back.

Please tell me what you think. :)

I think I will invite her again to the studio and try other styles than this rather low key stuff.

By the way I haven't calibrated my monitor for a month or so so the images might be a bit off.

anyone switch from canon to pentax

I switched from C to Pentax aswell.

In-body stabilization, dust shaker and weatherproof bodies and lenses made me switch.

So far only the stabilization has actually come to reality. Dust shaker doesn't work and I dare not buy the 16-50 lens. Oh well I still do like my K10D, but not for the reasons that made me switch.

Does one really need a Brand-name tripod

I have an Amvona AT-A105T carbon fiber legs and an ATH-A04 ballhead.

I must say that I'm very disappointed with these.

Build quality and workmanship is a joke. The ballhead was full of debris from the machining and hardly moved at all untill I took it apar, cleaned and lubricated everything. Now it moves, but thats about it.

Two legs have already come off and I had to glue them back with epoxy.

The bubble levels aren't level or anywhere close.

The quick attachment plate is loose so that the camera wobbles when it's mounted. This easily leads to tilted pics.

The Amvona stickers look absolutely hideous.

Last time out and hiking a bit one of the leg sections got stuck and can not be extended.

I could go on and on. By far the worst tripod I have ever had. Oh well serves me right I guess for trying the cheap way out.

Quality brand tripods for me from now on.

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who likes this photo. :)

Why is it square? I saw this shot as square before I even pulled out my camera to take it. That's about all I know. :o

What makes a good flower shot?
Posted By Kim

There are all kinds of wonderful flower shots, but personally I go for colors, shapes and often general softness of the image. Not necessarily in that order though.

I'm no expert, but you can see a few of my flower images here: Kim Mervasto Photography

When I'm looking for flowers to shoot I first try to find the perfect flower. No holes or dry leaves etc. When I find a good sample I look at the flower from different angles and try to find some sort of interesting shape or feature worth photographing. I also pay attention to the background, but it's usually not a problem because of the shallow dof.

What I'd like to shoot, but havent found a good scene yet, is a lonely colorful flower in a monotonous landscape. Something like a flower in desert for example. This kind of flower images hit me the hardest, but it might be more landscape photography than flower photography, tho.

I must say that as much as I like my K10D I'd really prefer a "buttons for everything" approach of the UI. I'd like to see the Fn button go and see dedicated buttons for the functions behind it.

To me that Sony looks brilliant, but I'm not going to switch. :D

I'm glad you liked the pic. I had to kinda force myself to shoot this. It didn't happen as naturally as it usually does so even if I like the pic I had troubles believing if it really was any good. I hope this makes any sense. :D

Thnaks for commenting. :)

I guess it can be too dark on a lot of monitors. It has been a few months since I last calibrated (with Eye one) my monitor so it might be off a bit.

I've had a serious lack of inspiration lately when it comes to photography, but I managed to squeeze the trigger to get this one. Please tell me what you think. :)

As usual it looks better as a large(ish) print.

K10D + 12-24 f4 I think. Gradual ND filter done in PS.
