OK here is a link to both a converted K100D shot in IR and also a K20D without any conversion. You can see the difference in shutter speed, the K20D is VERY restrictive to IR.
This is a 19meg zip file with both shots in RAW: http://home.comcast.net/~starfire1010/ir.zip |

Correct, I believe the exposure on those was about 1/125@F8 so quite fast, and I plan on getting a different filter as I believe the Tiffen #87 is more selective on light transmission then the Hoya RM72.
I guess I'd be willing to attempt this for others if they wanted it, but it would be "Convert at your own risk!" Since K100, and ist's are getting so cheap to buy second hand I considered it to be a worthy investment and trial. Like I said it's not for the faint at heart, Pentax's design on the circuit board is odd that it cannot be removed without some desoldering. Also be careful of the flash capacitor, I found that out the hard way (Not that I didn't know but it seems easier to reach then I though, shocking to say the least!)
I'll post a raw later today for those that want to play with one to see what it's like. Those pics I posted have had some PS work done including the ever known Red/Blue swap.

Yes that is with a filter on the front, that's the Tiffen #87 filter. I will probably do as suggested and place a filter where the original hot filter went as now you can't see though the VF, metering is also off so maybe that will help that, though IR might meter different. I'll let you all know how it comes out.
I've read the kit lens is the best also, too bad I sold mine, I'll have to pick one up.

Ok so I removed the hot filter from my recently purchased K100D. I only have a 18-250 to test it with, everything works fine, but the 18-250 won't focus to infinity in IR and I didn't replace the filter with anything yet.
This isn't for the non electronic savvy to do either, I had to unsolder 4 wires to remove the circuit board that is in front of the sensor, it's not hard to do but there is plenty of places to mess something up.
Here are a couple first pics.
And i've added a couple RAWs for download: http://home.comcast.net/~starfire1010/ir.zip |

Aye that was me, I have a K100D in route to me now so I'll be attempting this soon myself, I might just go with out any filter as maybe the AF can be adjusted via the "debug" menu. If I really like it then maybe I'll put a IR filter in place of the hot filter making the camera a permanent IR camera.
Also I have a converted P&S IR camera, it's a Canon A630 and it does pretty good for a P&S, but I want the ability of manual control and use of more creative lenses. I also converted this myself, but you have to replace the hot filter with something clear for it to focus.
Here is a sample from the Canon. Not bad at all, so you might want to consider this, though a K100D is just as cheap as this camera was, plus you get RAW which is another reason for me to try this.
BTW that's 2 frames stiched |

I owned a 77mm Limited but ended up returning it I just wish it focused closer, I wish Pentax would have forgone the 35mm Macro for something like a 80mm F1.8 Macro Limited, I'd buy that in a flash!

Thanks I just wonder if the K100D would be different because of the Anti shake, though I doubt Pentax would go though that much in manufacturing.
Thanks for the links too!!! :D

Does anyone know the size of the k100D's IR filter, I'd like to get a replacement made in optical clear glass, anyone done a conversion?
Thanks!!!!:D

Why not just go for a K100D? I just picked one up for 300, don't think you'll find much cheaper.

I used a DP1 for about 2 weeks, great little camera, shots were amazing, but I really wanted something that could zoom since you really aren't getting that much resolution to crop with, but here are a couple shots form the DP1. |

I'm not quite sure what about this place made it seem special but it just has a feeling about it.
This is a B/W conversion in PS, I wasn't going for an IR look, but it has that to it.
This is 2 horizontal shots stitched together vertically, some PS work done here too.
Both of these were with the 18-250

Those are all by the Tamron 18-250, it's macro is really quite good, but I seem to need to get it calibrated for infinity, guess I'll have to send it in.

There are 10 Pics so sorry for those on dial-up! Just though I'd share since these are pretty heavily discussed lenses, and BTW that 82' Delta 88 (Yes it is an antique!) is our car and it's a wee bit modified ;D
The 3rd, 5th and 8th are 18-250 pics, the rest are DA*16-50 |

That's what I find hard to understand, everyone always says pentax is so much cheaper, I don't find that, sure you can buy old manual lenses cheap but if you want a modern equivalent to a Canon or Nikor lens it will cost just as much if not more since they are hard to find.
Just as an example you can get a Canon kit from 17-300mm all stabilized (No matter what is said in lens IS is better then in body SR) in 2 lenses that both perform pretty decent, with a lot of upgrade path all for about 1000, that's not bad at all, if you get it used even cheaper and heck one of those is full frame compatible if you decide to upgrade.
I am by no means defending Canon, but just saying I never understood the whole Pentax is cheaper thing, sure if you buy 3rd party it can be somewhat cheaper, but still not that much.
