Thank you for the link. Taking top off and gluing it sounds like wrong kind of fun. Will have to think it over.
forensicscientist :
Yes it focuses ,and yes it is not noticed up close. But weathersealing and getting cracked glass near my own,yet perfect, optical device is worrisome.

Cracked viewfinder - any advice?

So today me and my K-5 took a nasty fall on slippery rocky trail. I am all right, but K-5 viewfinder had a close (and amazingly accurate) encounter with rock and is in a bad, really bad, shape.
Camera focuses and takes in focus shots , so everything else looks fine. No warranty and no trust in local camera repairmen knowledge of Pentax DSLRs.

a) Is there a way to replace glass or viewfinder assembly by myself granted that my hands grow from a bit lower area then usual - but not badly so.
b) If (a) is true ,where i can order the thing - k-5 viewfinder searches on net gave negative results.
Thank you guys in advance.
p.s
I can consider myself lucky. On the other side of the K-5 was unprotected 16-50 but gladly no rock was going after it.

Raising prices of new-generation lenses and then allowing the consumers to fully use the old ones is not going to work well together. At least from Pentax perspective. I will be happy, of course. So i feel that if it is not just a PR attempt to shift the attention from the $ issue - then it has more chance for a rumor to point in a FF direction. With another set of lenses.
To speculate even further - maybe Pentax is not worried to loose the rate of sales of DA lenses because the factory shifted for producing those full frame zooms. Again, pure speculation.

Pentax Unilateral Pricing Policy

Not good. Not good at all. Local prices for K-7 are more expensive then K-5 at ,say, BH. Add taxes and shipping and it is more or less the same. Need to go for DA 300 soon and not wait for 560mm prices.

Question about K-01.

I just read on "the other site" hands on preview :) that K-01 cannot do stop down metering and the option is to shoot pre-A lenses wide open only. Not going to buy it, but i did heavily promoted it to someone with lots of old Pentax lenses and told him that it would work just like on my K-5 plus focus peeking. Should i call the guy (hoping he did not order it yet) or it is the hickup of that site?
Thank you in advance.

I use a rocket blower to get rid of the dust that dust removal system could not shake off. Happened only a few times on K-5 ,but i do have the dreadful stains and it does not look like it. It is a defined dark spot with non-defined halo around, and it is not alone - it usually has similar friends near by.

Hmm. Maybe someone will fall for your suggestion, especially if the cake will be designed be Marc Newson. I doubt though that it will be any help.
With the release date of finished product - more then 30 days to wait - i doubt you will be able to get a review of fully functional K-01 now, even with a devious cake bribe.

Advantages of K-01 over K-X (according to released specs only):
Much better video options and control.
Slightly more mp.
Slightly smaller.
Better aid for manual focus - focus peaking.
Slightly more options in general.
Possible smaller lenses (XS) in the future.
So if any of this speaks to you and is more important then lack of viewfinder you can go for it. Frankly the only major plus i see is in the video department.

The funny thing is that it makes me kind of sad because small chance of it been in my price range (2000$ and lower) decreases with every bit of good news about its capabilities.

Join in "probably the card" chorus. Similar thing happened to me long ago when card died, all last photos it succeeded to save had very similar patterns. And i had then Sony point and shoot camera.

My opinion about K-01 design

I like the design too. But viewfinder is a must. Using lcd on K-5 outside is not the best experience. Using lcd while holding 500gr of camera and, say, DA 300 is not going to be fun either.
The big mistake is not leaving any option for external EVF,at least this is how i see it.

Poll: OFFICIAL K-01 Styling Poll

1) Looks overall:
To me it looks pretty good, kind of "built for purpose" appearance. I"d say 4.
2) 40mm fitting:
No problems there too, however frankly i would much rather see slightly smaller 21mm. It would be both a bit bigger (since 40mm XS is ridiculously small) and more practical.
3) Buying it:
Nope. Got a K-5 and happy with it. However since this release and lens road map clearly show that there would be support for K-mount,there would be 35 ltd with a new home pretty soon.
4) Looks vs features:
Clearly a personal opinion, but both are important. Would buy an ugly camera with super functionality, but not a beautiful camera that works much worse then a competition though.
5) Non-Pentax crowd vs K-01:
Ok. Lens variety is huge plus. Size and especially lack of EVF huge minus. Price can decide the outcome between two, and so far it is ok. Not going to be a K-X hit, but expect to be sold better then K-R.

Actually i kind of like the design.Fuji still looks better, true - but it lacks the K-mount so there it goes. Clearly Pentax did not go for retro look on purpose since it tries for years to get new (usually younger) people in Pentauniverse. Doubt that i will buy the camera because K-5 rocks, but 21 XS lens sounds very promising. What is the bigger problem is lack of EVF, but if Pentax will somehow counterbalance it with features and price plus external EVF option it could be pretty good development.

New K-01 mirrorless camera coming

Ha. So the rumor about rugged-looking camera was true. As far as i see it, rubber like coating actually adds protection to camera so it is a plus and not a minus. Unless it is 6cm-deep rubber brick, of course.

Actually this is cool design. Maybe you could replace Marc Newson if his creation has such an impact on those who saw it. However i would rather have a brick with screwdrive and not cool looks without one.

If i am not mistaken French Pentax guys showed how it will look. Sort of. So i doubt that with all that size and DSLR-like appearance it will not have viewfinder of some sort. It is very uncomfortable to take pictures with half a kilo camera at arms length.

Poll: Do you Q? If not, why not?
Posted By fstdslrkx

I do not claim to be a representative for Q target market , but right now i look for small camera. It is supposed to be a present to someone who wants to upgrade from old point and shoot ,but i do not even consider Q.
Reasons? I can get quality point and shoot with fixed brighter longer zoom for much much less, and it will be just slightly worse then Q. I can get m43 with collapsable zoom and it will give better quality with similar size factor when zoom is off.
Q is expensive body with limited selection of lenses, and while quality of construction and options are unparallel for its class, point and shoot sensors become obsolete pretty fast and there is no real options of lenses to counter balance it.
By the way - the same negatives for Nikon new system,i will not go for them either. They are not small when with zooms and upgraders from P&S will want zoom and not primes.
So sadly, i will not Q. But i do K and if Pentax was investing the same effort to push K-5 (and next K's) as it does with Q i will be happy.

I may be missing something, but what APS-H cameras are there besides Canon? Canon does not share their sensors and new APC-H sensor made by Sony only for Pentax cameras will cost not that much less then FF sensor that is allready being produced for several clients.
