Bought FA*200/2.8 but received DA*200/2.8 ?!

probably just me, but this kind of haggling instead of just fixing the problem is precisely why i try not to do business with some retailers.

here's what happened when i bought an inexpensive wireless printer from amazon and it was doa: i emailed them my distress. the return email said a new one was on its way and they were emailing an rma with a prepaid ups label so i could return the one that didn't work. i was given a deadline by which the claimed doa item had to be shipped/returned to them. the replacement printer (brand new, not a refurb or whatever it is some other retailers do) arrived as scheduled. they also emailed me when they received the returned one. it doubtless cost amazon about as much as they paid epson for the printer to resolve the issue. on the other hand, there have been any number of times when i could have made a purchase for, say, $50+ less somewhere else and have gone with amazon instead precisely because of that service.

now here are you and i on the internet relating our experiences - yours with adorama and mine with amazon. i leave the resulting impression to your imagination.

i believe the online retailer you're discussing has a customer service rep who sometimes appears at pf. you should ask adam for assistance in contacting the rep. i say this because if my assumption about which retailer it is is correct, based on my personal experience, their online customer service is, shall we say, unsophisticated and one reason i take my business elsewhere.

there is, by the way, no doubt in my mind that if your order confirmation says you ordered and paid for an fa* lens, that is what you should get. a first-rate retailer will pay for return of the wrong item and ship you what you ordered. the cost of doing that compared to the damage caused to its reputation by not doing it is miniscule.

good luck.

The Lens Review Section is Borderline Worthless

they can use whatever methodology they choose. but the object is to demonstrate that existing reviews of one (and preferably several) of the lenses in the database have produced an erroneous conclusion, thus lending substantiation to the claim that the current reviews are borderline worthless.

otherwise i don't see the reason for the fuss. and i certainly don't see any basis for jettisoning the contribution those who have participated in writing reviews have made thus far, which is really where this is leading.

as a user with a vested interest in the lens review database continuing to exist (as in, i do refer to it when looking at purchases), i have a suggestion. there seems to be a lot of theory being expounded about how reviews should be structured, etc. but no one has yet demonstrated that things are dreadfully amiss.

so i have a suggestion. why don't those who think the reviews are "borderline useless" take a few of the reviews of the lenses they own and demonstrate why the existing reviews of those lenses are wrong or don't work. presumably they can show why a lens rated as an 8 on average is either not worthy or is underrated.

maybe then there can be some substantiation of the claim about uselessness to begin with.

if that proves to be too much to ask, then tell me why anyone should assume whatever they propose to replace the present system is any better (as in, more valid, more worthy of acceptance, etc).

as a frequent user of the lens review database, i have to disagree that it is useless. it's not gospel, but it's far from useless. i've made several purchasing decisions based on information in the review section and have yet to be disappointed. of course i do look at other sources of opinion, as well. but the pf database is one of the most straightforward and accessible.

one thing i do agree on: pictures from the lens that substantiate a rating are invaluable.

other than that, thanks to pf members who have taken the time to contribute their reviews. keep at it!

i don't own either lens, but thought you could benefit from my experience when trying to decide on the zeiss 85mm. there are two sites i looked at for sample photos. one was pixel-peeper.com, which appears to be a more organized presentation - in terms of presenting lenses by maker - of flickrivr, and the other is zeissimages.com.

don't apologize. before the dxo mark numbers came out, there was all kind of lamenting going on about the price of the k-5 and why pentax was killing itself by not listing it at a lower price. and before that there was all kind of lamenting going on about why pentax would be committing suicide if it didn't produce a ff camera this year. i personally am ready to jump in with reasons why pentax is on the verge of demise for not issuing the da 30mm f1.8 (i think it was f1.8) that was on the road map a few years ago. it's a cantankerous bunch pentax has to deal with.:)

you should not worry. this is done all the time. you were not under some kind of nda and you didn't break anything. in addition, you're helping the buzz in the k5's favor and i think it highly unlikely that pentax is going to go against its own interest by trying to clamp down on you. thanks for posting!

My Relationship with Pentax a Very Long Goodbye

the real elephant in the room is that benjikan's thread is a parody of the long goodbye threads others have written at pf and elsewhere as they took off for ff land or faster af land or higher iso land or all of the above. many of those who remain and still moan on the forums about the lack of this or that want it from pentax for "free" or as close thereto as possible. well, no harm in asking.;) so why should anyone begrudge someone with enough talent to actually make some big-time magazine covers for asking and lamenting? there's room for just about everyone on the internet. no need for anyone to kick a benjikan or a no-name for speaking up.:)

what would it cost him? even if some don't like his saying openly what he thinks, it won't take away his talent. will he get a reputation as a prima donna? that could even be a plus in fashion photography. will pentax refuse to ever let him use pentax equipment again? can't see how that could be enforced or even how they would benefit.

at least benjikan's plaint is filled with some eye-popping photos and good humor.

okay, everybody, rush over to the falk lumo site. he's done his write up and notes at the end that the k5 was awarded one of the photokina star awards. kind of impressive given the ham-handed, marx brothers comedy re the release of specs and pricing.:)

sounds to me like there's a lot to look forward to - and it may even make it easier for people to decide to pay for more upscale da lenses when they come to represent the uncontested epitome of modern pentax lenses. i found it instructive while browsing lenses to stumble across the blog of a pentaxian who had purchased a ff lens previously owned by kerrick james, who had decided to go with the da* version. can't remember if it was the 200 or 300, but the message to me was that the da lens met some pretty high performance requirements. at that point, i decided that the da* 200 is in my future - and probably for less new than a used fa* 200 on ebay.

not apples and oranges. more than a few who have been criticizing pentax have identified themselves us pros using pentax equipment to earn a living. nothing wrong with that and nothing wrong with their criticizing, but sometimes hard for those of us not in the same position to understand what the problem is. as long as the squeaky wheel principle is around and works, there will be squeaking.

kind of ironic that this is happening just as one of your most stunning photos got into the premiere gallery. congratulations on that, by the way. i knew when it came up for voting it was yours and i thought then it was premiere gallery material. it's too bad it was placed in the gallery on the same day you are announcing your unhappiness with pentax. would have loved to have seen some of your stuff taken with a 645d even though i'm not a follower of fashion photography.

i think pentax listened to its customers - it's just that some who post here think they are the only customers and forget most don't even form pentax' main market. i doubt that forum participants here posted that they wanted a kx in 100 colors. but i would also bet a marketing survey in japan turned up a very positive response to the idea.

now pentax is moving forward with the k5 - and its development may well be based on a much larger survey pool than represented by those who get on the message boards and repeatedly beat the drums about ff and tethering. who knows, those may yet come. but if the projected monthly production numbers quoted are correct, hoya does not expect the k5 to be the big sales leader for the pentax brand. it is, however, a marker, and a very reassuring one for those who bought da lenses and want to continue to do so, that there is a commitment to development on pentax' part associated with those purchases. it may be a subliminal message, but it is an important one.
