I've considered switching to Canon in the long term. I have a K200D that I LOVE, honestly, it's been great and I don't think I'm even done growing into it. But still, once I have what comes next? I wish Pentax would introduce some higher end models to which I can aspire. They seem determined to split the difference with models that come somewhere between, say a Nikon D90 and D300, or between D300 and D700. But they never reach upward into the realm of a D3 or the high-end Canons.
Because of this I can see myself down the road needed/wanting to switch just to experience those high-end capabilities. I want the high ISO performance. I want the high fps. I WANT FULL FRAME.
That, I would say, is Job #1 for Pentax. Get into some serious pro models. Now.

Didn't think it made a difference. I figured if I manually set it "Rear" I'd be set.
Yep, the 48 AF-1 on par with that Pentax model, only stronger and with a rotating head, almost 360-degrees. I love the thing.

CLM,
That worked! Switching to TTL instead of Manual on the flash got it done. I don't know why that is but whatever. :D
I feel MUCH better now. Sorry I ever doubted you, Pentax.
Jonson PL, thanks for the links. I'll check them out too.

No, it definitely isn't in the menu as a selectable option, but the manual says there is at least one way to get this effect -- an incredibly roudabout, unnecessarily clumsy and stupid way, I might add -- without selecting a menu option. But I'm starting to doubt that even that would work. Why should it work with a shoe mount adapter connected via sync cord to an external flash if it wont work with the external flash shoe-mounted directly?
Do most SLRs have a menu option for this? I was under the impression that most SLRs achieved this effect by via the settings on the external flash when mounted atop the shoe? Is that not the case?

So it's not just me then. I was really wondering it there was some magic trick I'm just missing. It seems plain crazy that a dSLR can't do this unless I rig my flash to a sync cable and use it with the pop-up flash. I'm hoping against hope that this just isn't true.
Do you know if the newer models work any better? The K-20D, K-X or K-7?

I've been trying to shoot with rear curtain sync and it just doesn't seem possible. I have a K200D and a Metz 48-AF-1 set to "REAR", Metz' setting for rear curtain. The K200D manual has only sparse info on the topic. It seems to suggest that this can only be done in conjunction with the pop-up flash (see page 140). That seems ridiculous to me. Can this possibly be true?
But it also suggests by way of a chart on page 134 it's possible by simply setting your shutter speed 1/90 or slower. This is clearly not the case judging from the results I've gotten. So what gives? I can't find any clear instruction on making this work.
