looks on par with the K-x for high ISO - maybe a bit better.

The 6400 photos look really good! $899 seems a bit steep though.

I've never had good luck with manual focus. A split focusing screen does help enormously, but after I've micro corrected my lenses the autofocus on my (digital) is more accurate than I can ever be

I'm 21 right now, and I'm following the rules for retirement.

I'm putting $2k / year into a retirement account, and, assuming 9-10% interest, I should be at 1.5 million by age 65. We'll see how that plays out, I guess!

going from K20D to GF1--crazy?

The panasonic "G" line are very nice cameras. The downside is that anything past ISO 1600 is totally (totally) unusable. I had a GH1 but sold it for my Pentax kit.

Have you perhaps considered a K-x + DA 40mm f/2.8? That would run you the same cost as the GF1 kit, and the IQ would be better, about 2 full ISO stops.

To each his own though. I wouldn't be satisfied with a GF1 full time (perhaps as a travel/backup though). But it looks as you might be.

The manual focus magnification is definitely a cool feature, though. I must say..

If you have time, go manual. Shoot landscapes at F/8, ISO 400 or lower.

Street shooting is fun. People fascinate me.

What *I* do is put the camera in A mode, f/11, ISO 1600, and manual focus.

I choose f/11 so that I can get more of the shot in focus -- increases the 'keepers' rate. I set the focus manually to a specific distance, then shoot from the hip whenever someone interesting walks into the 'in focus field'. I pick a high ISO because I like the grain for B&W street shots, and it allows for very fast shutter speeds, which is helpful when shooting from the hip.

Yea, it depends what you;re shooting too. If it's still life or art shots, Manual is king

If it's people (kids, sports, etc) Usually A mode is best (or P, if you're flashing). Sure, sometimes the camera doesn't expose perfectly, but if you shoot in RAW you can push/pull it 1-2 stops pretty easily. I use A mode probably 75% of the time

1. Probably Price, High ISO. Didn't need the K7 weather sealing

2. Not at all. On any DSLR i just use the center point only AF mode, lock in the focus, and recompose if necessary.

3. Screen is totally fine, better than most actually. But Live View still sucks, don't even think about using it. (S L O W). The only 'good' LV camera I've seen are the m43 cameras from panasonic. (G1 GF1 GH1)

One gripe I have about the K-x is that it picks a ridiculously high ISO when set on auto.

You can set the maximum auto-ISO to whatever you want, just by hitting the ISO button on the back. I keep mine at 3200. Then, if the light is really bad, I'll up it to 6400 or 12800 manually. I might suggest you do the same, unless the grain in photos doesn't bother you.

Have fun with your K-x! A very capable camera :)

Take my wedding photos?

I'm tempted to say yes, If your last resort is giving your gear to a family member!

I'm in Crete, IL (30m s. of downtown chi), but I'm far from qualified to shoot a wedding, wouldnt take any $ if you tried (well, gas and food maybe), and would make no promises! ...

Equipment:
K-x -- DA* 16-50, 50-135, DA 40mm
Decent Tripod

Maybe could borrow: (D90 -- kit lens, 35mm f/1.8, 70-300mm f/4-5.6)

No flashes, and no wedding experience . hmmm!

Is Pentax going down??

Pentax is here to stay.

There's a number of reasons why *I* love pentax, though.
-Best weather sealing for under $1k
-In body Shake Reduction
-Great Lenses. DA and DA* are Canon "L" quality optics
-Wonderful Ergonomics. Pentax bodies fit my hands so well
-Pancake Primes. Only other companies that offer that is Olympus and Panasonic. (both using 4/3rds or m4/3 format)
-Compatibility to use any pentax lens ever made. canon can't say that!
-Good codecs. Movies are in AVI format, RAW's are in DNG (the new "standard"). Don't need to use proprietary software to process files.
-Price is always a factor, but less so now. Pentax glass used to be "dirt cheap," but it seems now the prices are creeping up to what most would consider normal. Bodies are a great value, especially the K-x, which was at $479 a few weeks ago.
-Performance - ISO 12,800 mode on the K-x, best of the APS-C.

Yea, the list goes on. Pentax rocks.

K-x, worth upgrading to?

The K-x is small. Like really small. Personally, I love that.

I couple it with a DA 40mm "pancake" and it basically fits in a coat pocket. If you can find a store locally to hold it and test it, I would. Not sure how possible that is, most stores don't carry pentax unfortunately =(

300mm would be 50% closer than 200mm.

So, it would be 1.5x closer. Something like this (approximately)

K7 or the Canon 7D are *about* your only good options for weather sealing. Maybe a Nikon D300

Go with the K7. Its the smallest and cheapest of the lot. Not to mention great quality :)

Its definitely a camera to grow into! What are you needs, per se?

If you don't need the weather sealing, you might want to check out a K-x, if you're a beginner.
