One M42 Adapter sold. One remaining. The one remaining was dedicated to my 50/1.4, and as such, has the spring hinge removed. I stored the spring and screw in the pretty little green bag, in a location where I knew I wouldn't lose it, and of course, I can't find it now. Price reduced to $20.

Thanks!

Item for Sale
Asahi Pentax Super-Takumar 50/1.4

Asking Price
$65

Item Location
Seattle, WA

Item Description
Selling an Asahi Pentax Super-Takumar 50/1.4, S/N 1581875, in good condition. A few rub marks/scratches along the barrel, but the glass is IMMACULATE. No dust, dirt, fungus, haze, or oil on the blades. Focus is SMOOTH. Distinct clicks on aperture ring, and takes great photos. There is a slight ding on the filter ring (just above and to the left of the "Super", but this lens still takes a filter no problem. Comes with front cap only. I'll protect the rear with a vintage Asahi Pentax Spotmatic...not sure of that camera's working condition, but the lens is tip-top.

The dust speck you see on the lower middle left is some towel lint on the outside of the lens I failed to notice before snapping the pic. You can also see the slight ding on the upper left...but it still fits a filter no problem.

Shown here with the M42 adapter, also for sale.

The lens tool is called a Spanner, you can probably find them at a local camera store...or they're on Amazon for $15.
To remove the retaining ring, I've used the rubber top of a cane. The pharmacy has different sizes...I picked the largest one and it fits 49mm perfectly. It's all about friction.
The process described sounds pretty similar to what I've done before, which is described HERE. More power to you if you've got the mental fortitude required to rip apart Limited lenses.

I too am amazed by this. My 18-55 AND 50-200 WR kit lenses were pristine...but so much drama with my Limited buying. And I'm not talking about shining a flashlight down the barrel to find fault (I think a tiny bit of TINY dust particles is pretty much unavoidable), but just holding the glass up to a ceiling light would show so much nasty inside my lenses that I never even bothered to put them on my camera.

Since I've had so many issues with unclean lenses, I've decided I'm going to keep this CLEAN copy of the FA 31 Limited, but have B&H send it back to Pentax to have the blades realigned.

On the other hand...my 100 Macro WR is taking some AMAZING pics!!! Only had to return that one ONCE to get a good copy. :P

I don't suppose you have a detailed document with images and step by step instructions detailing the process of realigning the blades?

I think I'd be way too nervous about operating on the diaphragm myself, so I guess we'll see how much the technician cares about getting it right. I may be hitting you up in a few weeks when I get it back though :P

The blade in question is bottom center...misalignment appearing on the LHS.

I have a feeling that at f/2 I'm going to see some funky halos, but the nighttime has not yet arrived, so I must wait. :)

I'm thinking, return to B&H to have them send to Pentax for fixing. It starts to look nasty to me at around f/11.

New update...just opened the box:

Copy #2 of the 100 Macro came in....CLEAN!

4 returns of the 77...and magically the FA31 reappeared in stock. So I exchanged 77 for the 31.

Glass is clean, however, ONE blade is out of alignment...noticeable at 5.6 and beyond.

I plan to use the 31 for nighttime cityscapes, star trails, etc. Basically, everything. f11-f16 are very likely to get a bit of use...and it's very noticeable at these apertures. Not like the FA43 images...rather, the reverse. from f5.6 - f22 the aperture gets more and more squared off. Is the one misaligned blade a returnable offense? Return and run the risk of dirty copies with the same blade issues...or, have B&H send it back to Pentax?

I'm very frustrated with these issues...but I'm determined to get solid copies for my hard earned money. What do you guys think?

Agree with blackcloudbrew...you should get at least one of the kit lenses, or a higher grade DA series lens if you're interested in optimum image quality. As lens technology progresses, other things have regressed. The viewfinder on my K-7 is pretty tough to use with old MF lenses, and I've got 20/20 vision. They expect you to rely on the AF systems, so if you like to manually focus alot, a replacement focusing screen like the KatzEye is almost a must have item.

Oh yeah, @ rkt:

When I get a new lens, I hold it against a well lit white background and look for junk inside. If it passes this initial round, I mount it on my camera and tripod, set to near focus, and take a snapshot of the streetlamps across the street at night at each aperture setting. If it passes that test, I set my tripod up at
specific distances from an object, focus it up, and take another few shots. Takes about 30 minutes, and is well worth the time.

LOL Ira cracks me up.

Yes, these are new lenses. Are you suggesting that as a standard practice, we should all be OK with paying significant amounts of cash for "top of the line" lenses, only to pay more cash in shipping, just to get fixed what should have been constructed properly in the first place? That sounds like a wonderful plan!

I vote that I return the lenses, get quality ones in exchange, and that B&H sends me a defect free 43 limited for my troubles.
