k10D shutter firing erroneously
Posted By blade_o5990

hello all, I have a broken K10D it fires the shutter* when any button is pressed, excluding AE-L, the metering modes lever, SR lever, flash, and focus lever. Every other button, control wheel, or lever causes the shutter to fire, halve press of the shutter button causes it to fire preventing a full press (same with cable release) it will also occasionally fire at random without being touched. no data is saved to the card. Any advice on what might be the problem would be helpful. I'm not sending the camera back to pentax as im sure it will cost more to fix than the camera is worth, and I have another K10, i just want to see if i can fix this one for my own amusement.
thanks

*(well actualy its too fast, sounds like around 1/50, to see if the curtain is firing, but the mirror is for sure)

what I did was buy a cheap clip on cap light from walmart for like $10 and epoxy-ed on a 1/4-20 screw (which is the thread rate for almost all cameras tripod sockets). works perfectly.

Pros reliable, intuitive, and solid build Cons unneccesary modes like action and landscape clutter up the mode dial Rating 9 Price (U.S. Dollars) unknown Years Owned 5

I can recommend this camera: Yes

Value, Features, Performance & Size
great value, interface similar to digital, P-ttl flash, compact and light weight.

Camera Review
It is a very good film camera, especially if you are use to more of a digital interface. It is light and compact, but has a decent build quality. The mode dial seems a little plasticy to me but beyond that, it’s a very solid felling camera. I also find the grip to be slightly to narrow, beyond that all the controls are laid out in a intuitive manner. I’ve had mine for about 5 years now, and it’s never given me any problems at all. Always starts up and shoots, even in very cold (-12ºF) weather. I don’t use auto focus, or auto exposure modes very much so I can not comment on those features, but I do find the matrix metering mode to be very reliable (with some common sense applied). The camera has a good, but not stealer viewfinder. In the viewfinder, your meter and shooting info show up on the right of the frame, and protrude into the picture are a little bit, this has never hindered my ability to compose pictures, but I personally prefer my meter on the bottom of the viewfinder window where it is completely out of the way. Exposure is adjustable in halve stop increments, this is not a problem for me as I primarily use it to shoot black and white negative film, but could be a consideration to someone who shoots slides. I use this camera to shoot B&W film when I don’t want to haul around my MF camera and another set of lenses in addition to my digital system, and also as a back up for my K10. the ZX-l is a good counterpart to a digital SLR, it has a similar style interface, uses the same 2.5mm plug cable switch, and also has P-TTL flash support. This camera has served me well and never let me down, I defiantly can recommend it to any one looking for a 35mm film camera, especially at its very low price on the used markets.

Shake Reduction and super-resolution

This is something that I have been interested in for a long time, but unfortunately, I don't think Pentax is interested in doing it, or they would have already done it. (I've written them a couple of letters, and posted on the dear Pentax thread, but no luck so far, obviously) I do believe that the SR mechanism would be precise enough for the sensor positioning required to do a four shot merge. here is my post about full color using the SR system from about a year ago. https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-dslr-discussion/84360-possible-ful...reduction.html

pentax FF... why?

okay, here is my question is why are people still waiting for a Pentax FF camera. Pentax is releasing the 645D instead of a FF (IMHO). The 645D body may be more expensive than canon and Nikons' FF offerings, but the glass is substantially cheaper, so a full system will probably cost you about the same. The 645d is smaller than the d3x, has some pretty advanced electronics, the option to use leaf shutters, your choice of lenses (645 or 67), very good quality output, and will be available in December. So why wait for a 35mm full frame when Pentax has a camera with a larger sensor ready to go.

Dear Pentax
as you are launching a new set of digital 645 lenses, I think you should provide an adapter that allows use of the 645 lenses on K bodies, with the ability to shift and tilt. It would be a cost effective solution to provide Pentax users with PC lenses. Ideally I think you should release a set k to 624, k to 67 and 645 to 67 all with movements. Aperture linkage wouldn't matter, because PC lenses are meant to be used slowly methodical.

Titl shift lens for the 645D

I think a 67 to 645 adapter that allowed tilts and shifts would be the best solution, it would allow you to use a larger variety of focal lengths, and 6x7 coverage on 44x33 would allow a decent range of moment. Granted you wont have as large an angle of view (35mm is the wides lens available for 67), but you could always use the shifts to merge a couple of shots together in PS.

Pros handling, color, UI, image quality Cons high ISOs, jpeg Rating 9 Price (U.S. Dollars) 600 Years Owned 2

I can recommend this camera: Yes

Value, Features, Performance & Size
great image quality, intuitive UI, backwards compatible, DNG RAW

Camera Review
I love my pentax k10d. It feels very good in your hands, solid and comfortable. The camera produces nice natural color, has decent dynamic range (biased towards the shadows), and has an amazing user interface. The cameras controls are all logically laid out and all the essentials are easily operated without taking the camera away form your face (after firmware upgrade that allows the OK button to be used as an ISO button). The menus are logical and to the point. You kind of forget the camera is there when you shoot eh UI is that good. The camera performs very well at base ISOs but is not very good past ISO 400 (I would call ISO 400 acceptable depending on the subject and situation). If you are a use to shooting slow film, like me, this is probably not an issue to you. At base ISO you can get very solid pictures form this camera, I have made 20x30s before that really startled me with the level of detail. I can not comment on AF performance as I rarely use it. The K10 has a very nice viewfinder which facilitates using MF lenses. Some have commented on poor cold weather performance, this has not been my experience, I have used the k10 in -20 F weather, with no problems except reduced battery life and very occasional meter inaccuracies. While it doesn’t have all the Swiss army features that are becoming standard, but it doses what it is meant to do very well.

Best use: landscape, macro, studio, portraiture, general.
Not ideal for: low light hand held sports, weddings.

one way to get a wider field of view (in your print) out of a lens is to use photomerge in photoshop, and merge 4 tiled shots. Just leave room for cropping and distortion correction. It works best off of a tripod with stationary objects, but I have used the technique hand held quite often with satisfactory results. It is a good way to get around having to buy a wide angle assuming you dont shoot with wide angles that often.

problem using stacks in CS4
Posted By blade_o5990

So I want to try to edit in stacks Adobe Photoshop CS4 * Creating an image stack (Photoshop Extended) but cant seem to get it to work. my understanding is the the usual command is file, scripts, load into stack and then once your files load you go file, scripts, statistics, my problem is that there is not file, scripts, statistics for me. I'm using CS4 extended so I should have it. My layer, smart objects, stack mode is always grayed out too. (weather I convert the top file to a smart object, or all the files or select all and then convert to smart object, which flattens the layers). So Im wondering if there is some setting I have changed that would prevent me form using stacks? or if im just missing something, thanks

a possible full color hack for all bodies with shake reduction

So Pentax has in camera stabilization in most their DSLRs, right, stabilization that can compensates for X and Y movements, so whats to stop from a hack or better yet firmware upgrade (hint hint Pentax) that allows full color resolution by merging 4 shots where the sensor is moved one pixel each frame by the shake reduction, kinda like the hasselblad H3DII-50's multi-shot (info here ) dose. I honestly don't know if this would work, but i think its some thing that warrants some consideration :)

dear pentax, I would really like a firmware upgrade that would allow me to capture full color images by moving the sensor 1pixel between shots. like the hasselblad H3DII-50 dose. This would be awesome...

dear pentax,
I want a fully manual FF DSLR, no auto exposure, no auto focus, take all the money and spend it on producing an awesome Sensor. The only thing I do want is shake reduction, and while your making the shake reduction you might as well add in a mechanism like the Hasselblad multishot H3DII-50 has where you can move the sensor 1 pixel each exposure to generate a full color composite (basically no loss from the color filter over the CCD/Cmos) that would be awesome.
