Hello,
Recently I bought K-x as my first DSLR. I am just starting to play with RAW files. As the first step, I shot few images with RAW+ mode, then I tried to convert RAWs to JPGs with Pentax Digital Camera Utility 4.11. and compare results with JPGs from camera.
For low ISO images the JPGs from DCU looks slightly better for me, even without adjusting any setting - and of course the difference grows when I need to adjust something.
But with high ISO the result is disappointing - and the reason is noise reduction.
Please look at following examples.
Here is 100% crop from ISO 1600 JPG from camera. Noise reduction was set to Medium (factory default): Attachment 49989
And here is the same crop from image converted from RAW in DCU. The noise reduction options were left default:
Random noise reduction 20
Spurious color signal reduction 150
I also did not change any other setting. Attachment 49990
As you can see, resulting JPG has actually lower noise, but the artifacts generated make it look much worse then the previous one.
I tried to play with these 2 settings, but I couldn't even get close to the picture from the camera.
Could anybody please give me some hint, how to make DCU generate the same noise output as K-x itself ?
Best Regards,
Piotr

@titrisol: yes, this I know, but I meant automatic correction..
@Russell-Evans: This is it, thank you ! It's quite easy to convert this data to lensfun format.

Hello everyone,
I am the new Pentax K-x user and not new Linux fan. I have a problem which I'd like to discuss with you. Do you know any linux software which is able to correct lens distortions, aberrations, etc ? For now I found lenstip library, which is used in Digikam, but it's lens database is quite narrow, and does not contain my lenses (SMC DA 18-250 and SMC DA 21/3.2 Limited - although this one does not really
need corrections so much ;) ).
I know, that with K-x I can enable corrections in the camera, but then saving image takes too much time, so I am looking for another solution.
Looking forward for any suggestion.
Best Regards,
Piotr
