I don't do a lot of this type of photography as I'm quite self conscious, but after lurking in this thread it has inspired me to try this a little more. Here is my favourite capture of a stranger from an outing yesterday. I was tempted to go with a B&W version of this because I find the colours in the background distracting, however I like the green sunglasses and blue headphones so I left it as colour. What do you think? Did I make the right call?(hopefully I posted this correctly)

I didn't have anything on hand to polish the edges. I did make sure that the piece was completely clean (no filings), and I used a sharpie marker to colour the edges in order to prevent any reflections from the cut edge. I suppose I really should find a way to polish it smooth though.

Here are a couple of pictures illustrating what I had to do to make the Vivitar 70-210 fit the K-x.

In the case of the Vivitar 70-210, if it's the same model I have, you will have to do some surgery to make it fit. My Vivitar 70-210 which fit perfectly on a Super Program and Program Plus, would not fit on the K-x. I had to trim the flange with a hack saw to make it work. It was not very difficult and it works fine now. I could post some pictures later if that would help.

Has anyone with a Mac tried Acorn? Acorn, the image editor for humans.
I've been playing with it a bit and it seems quite powerful but I'm new at this so I don't have anything to compare it to.

The picture of the guy in the sombrero is so much more powerful in B&W. Awesome.

It works if you install UFRaw UFRaw - Home
I'm new to RAW and the Gimp so I can't comment on how well it works but it does open the PEF files.

I also enjoy the shutter sound of my K-x. Having said that, I can see that there are times when you'd want it to be quiet so as not to disturb others in certain situations however I will not be sticking any tape inside my new camera.

My understanding was that the 18-55 on the APC-C is equivalent to the the 28-80 on the 35mm. But based on the responses here, it sounds like this is not the case and that there is no conversion necessary, I should really be comparing the focal lengths directly. If this is true, then there really is a bit of a gap that would be covered by this lens. Hmmmm... so much to learn...

Hi, I'm new to the world of dSLRs with the recent purchase of a K-x with the standard kit lens. I have a few lenses from my 35mm days and am a little confused by the focal length equivalents of the new format. I have the following 35mm lenses:
- Pentax KA 50mm f1.7 with a broken "A" setting - I think it makes sense to keep this lens for speed in low light and shallow DOF.
- Vivitar 70-210mm - I think it makes sense to keep this for the reach (I had to modify it to fit the K-x but it works)
- Pentax SMC-A 28-80mm - This one I'm not so sure about. Is this focal length redundant if I already have the 18-55mm dSLR kit lens? I currently have it up for sale but I'm having second thoughts. Does it make sense to sell this one or is there value in keeping it?
Thanks!

Well, that's my problem... there is no protruding bearing. I took the ring off and it's not there at all. I guess I'm out of luck unless I can find another lens to steal parts from.

I have a slightly different problem with this lens; the "A" setting does not work any more. I can move the aperture ring to the A setting, but the camera does not seem to recognize that it is on this setting. This didn't bother me much with my older cameras but now that I'm back into the SLR world with a new K-x I think it would be nice for this setting to work.
Any thoughts on how to fix this issue?

This is what you need to do...
1 - set "Using Aperture Ring" to "Permitted"
2 - set "Action in M mode" of the Green Button to "Tv Shift"
3 - set your camera to manual "M"
4 - set the desired aperture setting on your lens manually
5 - compose your shot and press the Green Button to set the shutter speed (pressing the exposure compensation button seems to do the same thing)
6 - shoot

I have the same question. I have read the entire manual and did not run across an answer. Looks to me like there is no way to turn this off.

I saw a similar issue in one of my pictures shot the day I bought my K-x. It was a night shot of the outside of a restaurant where a bright sign at the top of the image was reflected upside down on the bottom of the image. This was with the kit zoom and a B&W UV filter. I wonder at the cause as well.
