New 400mm Tokina

I just wanted to share some shots from a new old lens I picked up. I am looking to purchase a new K1-II in the near future and I was looking for a lens to make up for the loss of zoom I will have with a full frame. I came across a pristine Tokina 400mm 5.6 ATX SD auto focus and pulled the trigger. Its not the sharpest lens I own, but not bad for a 400mm(600mm cropped). It is also surprisingly fast to focus, but it can occasionally hunt.

Go up to Corolla and check out the wild horses. You will need a 4 wheel drive vehicle, but its a fun experience. There are tours available if you don't have a vehicle. Jennette's pier is a quick fun trip. The aquarium down in Manteo is a good day trip too. Two of the shots below are from Jennette's Pier. The other is an old one of some wild horses sleeping on the beach in Corolla. Make sure you visit Run Down Cafe too. Its my favorite place to eat down there.

Camera Gear Storage Cabinet

I just wanted to share with the forum a recent project I embarked on. I was looking for a storage solution for my photography gear. I was tired of keeping all my gear in various bags laying on ground beneath my computer desk. I had a small set of plastic drawers which I kept a majority of my accessories in but my lenses would just end up scattered on top of my computer desk and in my bags. I started searching for photography cabinets online, but I came up with nothing. Every thing I found was just a large bag/case that cost hundreds of dollars. I decided to start searching for other pieces of furniture/cabinetry on craigslist that I could use. I came across an old dry bar. The cabinet was the perfect size, but needed some slight modifications.

It's a little banged up, but perfectly fine for the upstairs office.

Attachment 208714
The top shelf is perfect for the various chargers I have.

Attachment 208715
I added some dividers to the top drawer and stained them to try to match the original color. I used multiple removable dividers and one larger side to accommodate various accessories. I then used some thin yellow foam(almost like puffy poster board) that I found at the craft shop to line the bottom. I figured the foam would give some padding and the bright color would make it easy to find things.

Attachment 208716
I made the two drawers out of plywood. The stain didn't take as it well on the plywood even after 4 coats.

Attachment 208717
I then lined the drawers with pick and pluck foam.

Attachment 208720
The top drawer holds my camera bodies and flashes with a little room left over.

Attachment 208719
The bottom drawers holds my lenses with maybe room for one more prime

Attachment 208718
The side compartment is perfect for my collection of tripods/monopods and some other larger accessories.

The total cost was about $120
Cabinet $40
Pick and Pluck foam $40
Plywood and slides $40
I had the stain and other pieces of wood lying around

Overall I am very happy with the project. The drawers didn't come out perfectly, but they are functional and slides are breaking in nicely. The cabinet top also gives me a nice working surface for cleaning and readying my gear for shoots. It doesn't quite hold all my gear, but it does hold everything I need for my everyday shoots. I also wanted to thank my father for helping with the construction of the cabinet.

Well I got the K-01 this afternoon. Loving it! Not sure what the previous owner was talking about with the screen graininess, but the screen is nice and clean. Makes me wish I had focus peaking on my K5II. Best $180 I have ever spent

Unique Camera Bag Purchase

I just wanted to share a new purchase I made this past week with my fellow Pentaxians. I was looking for a bag for my every day carry that would allow me to take my K5-II with me. I wanted something small, but also something that allowed me to carry all my gadgets. Everything that I found was more camera bag than everyday carry. I was browsing everything from Lowepro to Thinktank when I came across the Caselogic FLXM-101. I haven't been that impressed with their bags in the past, but I have to say I am blown away with this bag. The bag is made from a durable yet soft fabric. It has one of the most comfortable straps I have ever used on a shoulder bag. The angle the strap comes off the bag has a lot to do with this. It also has a flat rubberized bottom which allows the bag to stand up straight on its own and last. The inner camera compartment holds my K5-II(no grip) with my 18-135mm attached and also has room for my 35mm f2.4, spare battery, cleaning cloth, and small rocket blower. The separate camera pouch also comes out easily if I decide I want to carry something other than my camera that day. It also has a nice padded tablet pocket on the inside of the bag. Along with the camera pouch I can carry the following:

Front pocket
-small flashlight
-Energizer 4000mah USB powerpack
-Leatherman Skeltool CX with case, extra bits, and bit extender
-bottle of hand sanitizer
-Kershaw Leek knife
-32gb thumb drive

Inside Main compartment
-Camera Pouch
-Kindle Fire HD 8.9 with case
-500gb USB harddrive with case
-Samsung HMX-W300 camcorder
-Also a small pocket with pens, tablet stylus, headphones, etc.

2 exterior side pockets
-a small travel umbrella
-18oz stainless steel water bottle

Outer Flap pocket
-small field notebook with pen

This bag is perfect for me. It now allows me to grab my camera and shoot instead of saying, "I wish I had my camera" or "that would make a great shot"
