K7 question: AF button does not lock AE when configured to do so

Thanks much for your replies! My K7 is my first digital SLR after upgrading from a Nikon FA. With so much user control there seem to be at least a couple different ways to do any one thing and some things don't seem to work as I think they should at first read.... all your experience & insights are greatly appreciated.

A follow-on question: in what situations is the function of locking AE with an AF button press useful?

K7 question: AF button does not lock AE when configured to do so

Hi,

On my K7 in P mode when I configure the AF button to lock AE (C2.13 set to Cancel AF) with AF button lock enabled (C1.5 ON) it will not lock AE in AF-C (AF is locked with the AF button pressed but not exposure). However the AF button will lock AE in AF-S.

When I switch to Av, Tv or TAv mode with the AF button pressed, AE won't lock in either AF-S or C.

I've tried all the above with and without setting AE to link to AF point in multipattern (and meter lever is set to multipattern).

I was hoping I could leave camera set to AF-C full-time and press the AF button to lock everything (AE & AF), simulating behavior of AF-S & half-press.

What am I overlooking?

thanks,
Fred

KX indoor low light exposure differences w/ 2 lenses

Hi mgoblue,
Thanks... on dpreview GordonBGood (with details of calculating LV) and Marc S pointed out the 17-70 had just enough light to meter correctly (and capture an unrealistically bright picture) and the 10-20 did not.
KX indoor low light exposure differences w/ 2 lenses: Pentax SLR Talk Forum: Digital Photography Review

Then how do I adjust the exposure so I capture a realistic image with the 17-70?

How do you shoot low light?

Maybe mysticcowboy and King_Boru touched on this and I don't quite understand... when I'm trying to shoot in low light and using automatic metering my pics turn out unrealistically bright.

How do I set an exposure that'll capture the actual light levels? Before someone says, 'switch to manual...' I'm meaning what are rules of thumb (if any) or how should i use the spot meter or histogram so that I can get my first or second shot closer to what I want?

As Mark S suggested earlier, in manual, press green button to get recommended shutter speed after selecting f & ISO but where to from there?

KX indoor low light exposure differences w/ 2 lenses

Hi,
Below are a couple pics taken with my KX. The brighter using a Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 and darker with a Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6. The pictures were taken in Program mode, AWB, auto ISO 200-3200, matrix metering, center focus, exposure not tied to focus point, no exposure compensation.

Why did the camera choose such a brighter exposure with the 17-70? It does not reproduce the actual scene. Further when shooting with the 17-70 the KX chose the widest aperture possible the exposure using the 10-20 is stopped down.

I've shot mostly with the 17-70 since getting the KX and the exposures the camera thinks is correct (whether program, Av, Tv, manual) seem to come out quite bright for indoor low light scenes.

Sigma 17-70: 19mm, f2.8, iso 3200, 0.5sec, program mode

Sigma 10-20: 20mm, f6.3, iso 3200, 0.25sec, program mode

Sakura,
Thanks for the link. Does the ACMAXX in any way impact viewability of the LCD on your K7 (good or bad)? Glare increased or decreased? Viewing angle?
thanks,
Fred

Giottos LCD protector for KX?

Hi,
Giottos doesn't make a screen protector specifically for the KX but the SP8270 is almost the right size. The KX LCD is 60x49mm. The SP8270 is 60.8x48mm.

Has anyone with a KX used this protector to comment if the size difference is a problem? Or if the border of the SP8270 reduces the viewable area of the KX LCD?

Or more generally if there are any other high quality screen protectors (not vinyl adhesive type) that work with the KX?

thanks,
Fred
