Low-light video

I agree that if you have the bucks, 550D is a likely winner for video. I have the K-x and even with f1.4 it shoots some pretty grainy video. I've been thinking about buying the Neat Video Plugin to combat it. Not having full manual control doesn't help either. Also having a mic jack is a big plus. The K-x does have the in body image stabilization, which works well, but it is quite audible to the onboard mic. I still think for $500, the K-x can't be beat. But if the 550D was out when I was shopping for a camera, I'd have seriously considered it instead.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the sigma 30mm f1.4 vs the sigma 28mm f1.8? The 28mm is a bit cheaper, but they're comparable.

Thanks for the suggestions. I definitely don't mind going used. I'm kind of eying this Vivitar,
PENTAX K MOUNT VIVITAR 28mm 1:2 FAST LENS W/CAPS EXCELL - eBay (item 310196455549 end time Jan-30-10 21:41:06 PST)

I wouldn't say I like barrel distortion. I would say I don't mind it to a point.

I think it's probably pretty clear that I don't have much. I have been more of a video guy. I owned a DVX100b for several years, but sold it recently when I realized I ended up wanting to take photos more often than videos and my point and shoot wasn't cutting it. So I thought it was time to try out a dslr that also shot video. I did some research and settled on the K-X. Then I bought the old 50mm 1.4 lens off ebay to take full advantage of the cameras low light capabilities as I tend to shoot things at night. It's just that I find the available field of view somewhat limiting, particularly indoors where standing back from a subject isn't always an option. I switch back to my stock lens often, but find it lacking in dim lighting. I may yet simply get a faster manual wide angle lens. I just had this thought and decided to ask about it. In doing so I seem to have committed some semantic fauxpas amidst my description.

So yes, I concede this problem is in my imagination. It's only a problem in relation to my own preferences and limitations as a person. Though I think the same could be said for any problem to some extent. I don't think I'm making anything too difficult for myself. I'm rather enjoying the camera and I'll enjoy seeing what else I can make it do.

Yes I mainly mean wide aperture, though I do so prefer the smooth solid feeling of focusing this lens also. I do realize that I'm not going to find as wide an aperture on a wide angle lens. Thats kind of the reason for my inquiry. I appreciate the widely shared opinion that a converter lens is a poor fix, though I may want to try it out anyway. I just won't expect too much. I'm very accustomed to tradeoffs.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll look into it. Even if I decided to spend the $400 on the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM, I've read a lot of mixed impressions, so I don't know that I'd be getting much if any better image anyway. For the price, I'm thinking a converter lens is worth an experiment. I'm certainly no purist. Thanks also for the comparison shots.

Welcome to a future of "good enough" technology. I'm sorry you're confused, time travel is disorienting.

In all seriousness you have taught me something. I now know someone can be a Troll and a Dinosaur at the same time. Good night old man.

Wow!

I sure didn't mean to start a bunch of semantics arguments. Thanks to everyone who is trying to be helpful.

I mean that due to the fact that this camera does not have a full frame sensor, I am only seeing a cropped piece of the intended 50mm field of view. It's identified as 1.5x, correct? I just want a wider field of view, but with the other characteristics of my 50mm f1.4 as apposed to that of the stock lens.

Of course I did already look at the front of the lens, which says 50mm. I just wasn't sure that automatically meant thread size. Can this be confirmed?

Has anyone ever tried mounting a super wide angle converser lens to their 50mm slr lens to counteract the crop factor. I Have as SMC Pentax-m f1.4 lens, which is great, but the crop factor makes its usefulness somewhat limited. I've considered buying the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM, because I've read it closely approximates the true 50mm field of view. However that lens is $400, not so high a price in the world of lenses, but high considering the K-x was only $550. Anyway I was thinking I'd just buy the wide angle converter lens for $50 and attach it to my smc 1.4. What I am wondering, is if any else has tried it and knows of any issues to consider. For instance, thread size. The stock lens on the K-x says it has a 52mm thread size. Am I to assume that my 50mm lens also has a 50mm thread size, or would it too have a 52mm thread? Most of the converters I've looked at have a 52mm thread and some come with adapters for larger sizes, but I've seen none that are 50.

noise reduction quality in video mode

I have not noticed the difference in video mode with noise reduction on unfortunately. It is strange how much better the still images seem to perform in low light. At least the K-X stays sharp in the dark. I get the feeling that it has a lot (if not everything) to do with the processing as apposed to the sensor. I think it's video is even noisier in low light than the GF1 which is smaller 4/3 sensor. Perhaps it's just a matter of giving up low noise in favor of latitude and sharpness.

I just wanted to add that I recently tried the "Neat Video" plugin for Final Cut and I am really impressed. I find myself wanting to shoot in low light conditions often, and even if I had the ability to limit exposure in video, I'd probably still want to push it to 6400 sometimes. I find it to perform even better than noise ninja does on stills. Im not one for paying for plugins, but I'll likely pick this one up. It is leaps and bounds better than the free alternatives.

horizontal bars in video

Thanks. After you suggested this I decided to test it on non florescent lighting. Such lighting was surprisingly hard to find since all the bulbs at my house are the energy saver variety. I guess my lcd monitor must have a florescent backlight because it had very bad bars. Anyway I determined that it only happens on high shutter speeds and only on florescent light! This is good and bad news, it means I understand the problem somewhat, but I'm pretty certain It wasn't like this when I first got the camera. At least I think it wasn't. Oh I also determined that it does show up in photos as well, only not nearly as bad as in video. Also only one bar appears in photos that is much thicker and more blurred. It reminds me of scan lines, like they're actually moving very fast. Do you think this is an artifact related to CMOS rolling shutter?

Yeah, I suppose not. I just thought maybe the camera was doing something weird because of a setting that is due to the manual lens. Next I'm going to try and repeat the bars with the stock lens and then I guess return the camera to Amazon. I've only had it a week.

I have a k-x. Also I'm using a Pentax 50mm 1.4 manual lens. I haven't tried to repeat the result with the stock lens yet. Are you using the stock lens?

I have found this (bug?) to occur only in live view when the lighting conditions are just so. If I snap a picture, the bars are not present, but if they are recorded in video they show up. Below is a link to a short mp4 sample video. I am wondering if this is due to some setting being off or if I need to exchange my camera.

It works fine in photo mode, but not movie. It lets me select it in the movie menu but turns off when I leave the menu.
When I go back into movie menu it is still selected on. I don't get it. Anyone else have the same problem, or a suggestion?
