I've spent about 6 weeks in Asia (on business) over the past few years. A few months ago I spent a few days in Shanghai (at the tail end of a week in Taipei).
I traveled with 2 lenses. My DA21 stayed on the camera most of the time. I found the focal length indispensable for landscapes, night markets, etc...
I also brought a 50mm f1.4. Here is a picture (using the 50) from inside a museum in Shanghai. I personally didn't find a need for anything longer than 50mm.
By the way, I have a k-x and shot some low light B&W photos at ISO 12,800 that I was delighted with. Liked the grainy look... I also used a combination of Eneloops and Lithium batteries. Liked them both.
One final comment on security. China is an interesting country because there are extremes of wealth and poverty. There are incredibly poor folks as well as incredibly rich. There are Ferrari and Land Rover dealerships in China. There are also folks who clearly are barely making it. Due to my ethnicity, I stood out from the crowd. I was frequently approached by folks looking to sell me watches, DVDs, and provide other services. I was warned by my hosts to take my security seriously, so I did. One aspect of that was to have a very nondescript camera bag that could be easily secured.

This is the hood ornament from a (very old) Lincoln. Very much enjoying my new Pentax kit.
The second image is at ISO 1600. I love the lines of old cars and am continually struck by their grace.

Item Description
Lowepro PhotoTrekker AW camera backpack (Black). This is a tough nylon case designed to carry and protect a lot of camera gear. It is not designed for a laptop, though a net-book would probably fit.
Has backpack harness and a quick-adjust waistbelt. There are attachment loops for optional accessories. There is an included pull-out "all weather" Cover (grey) that protects the backpack from weather and dust.
Has some signs of use, but they are minor. All the zippers are fully functional, no rips, and it 'looks good'.
