K1 Warranty did you need it?

I used to buy extended warranties for all the previous models (K-7, K-5, K-5ii) and have never needed to send it out for a repair... So I bought the K-1 around the time it was released (probably 2 years ago now). Didnt get the warranty but haven't had any issues with the camera either.

Sigma 100-300 f4 owners: is this what I should expect from this lens??

Have you tried to do any kind focus calibration? The first shot looks out of focus. The second one looks better, but still could be out of focus. 300mm F4 results in an incredibly thing depth of field. Are you shooting the DA* at the same aperture as well? I feel like there is pretty significant difference in the depth of field between the two shots (and it looks like it might be higher aperture than F4).

Technically, this should say "Quantity demanded exceeds quantity supplied". Demand and Supply are curves and they dont exceed each other. Just saying, since we are starting to get real precise now ;)

I know Pentax normally discounts lens on Black Friday sales, but do you normally see camera bodies? I don't remember seeing bodies on sale. Do you think it would be better to buy now from Amazon before the hike up or wait until Black Friday for a potential discount of $150+?

if you read through the reviews of the lens on here you will see there is at least one (maybe two people) who mentioned that same exact problem with the lens. inconsistent AF based on the distance to subject. i am not sure if it is a lens specific issue or how wide spread it is :/

77mm B+W Circular Polarizer for $60 at B&H 'deal of the day'

You can always get it and use step up rings for all of your smaller filter threads. This way you only need one polarizer.

It is an expensive and super niche item for a brand (Pentax) which is already niche. I imagine the size of the market is so small that it just isnt cost effective to cater to the demand.

Question to owners of FA 31mm f1.8 ltd.

I have it and it definitely is on the softer side between 1.8 and 2.8 (also past f8 due to diffraction). Soft vs sharp though is purely a matter of opinion and very subjective. If you are used to using Zeiss glass, at 1.8 you would consider it softish. If you are used to using the kit lens then it will be bitingly sharp even at 1.8. It also doesnt helpt that there is a ton of mis-information about this lens such as claims the MIJ > AIV version. FYI, mine is AIV (though i dont think that matters).

I remember I was also a bit dissapointed when I first got it and started shooting rulers (to fix some of the back-focus) and walls to check for corner sharpness and de-centering. At the end of the day, it is an old legacy glass and I just adjusted my expectations accordingly. Dont expect biting sharpness across the frame wide open and if you want sharpness stop down a bit ;). If you want wide open sharpness just return it and go for the sigma art 35 1.4. You buy the 31 primarily for the 'look' and rendering (aka pixie dust :D). To see it though, you would have to start shooting in real world situations.

Resolution is also better at 1.8 when the focus is between minimum and probably a meter or so. 1.8 at infinity is softer.

These are both at 1.8

Hey Adam! What was the consensus, did the sigma 85 1.4 work on the K1 or did it have compatibility issues?

Samyang goes autofocus!

I used to be huge Samyang fan because of the image quality, however their built quality is absolutely awful. The internals are entirely made of plastic and I recently had a lens (24mm F1.4) crap out in the middle of a trip. You could literally hear a wobble on the inside and the pictures reflected a major element decentering going on. FYI I generally baby my gear... Many other reports like this one online...

Here's the deal. The economics of his business are: "the more i praise, the more people click my links and buy the CaNikon crap, the more money I make". Every once in a while though you gotta slam something. Luckily, Pentax comes along with it's 4% market share and a flagship product which is even less marketable, so slamming it doesnt really impact him that much. Though it does give him 'credibility' as someone who doesnt praise everything. Why else would he go on this whole rant??? Either this or he is just a regular internet troll...

The Porst is a very different optical design and also not as sharp as the Cosina/Revuenon/Vivitar etc. Cosina, Revuenon and Vivitar differ slightly cosmetically but optically they are identical.

Depth of field?...can we close this argument once and for all
Posted By oxidized

The way I see it,

Put your 50 F1.4 on your APS-C camera. Take a head and shoulders portrait of someone standing right in front of you. While you, keep your position, pick up a full frame camera, slap your 50 1.4 on that camera. Whoa!!! The person now looks further away! I need to step in closer to take the same head and shoulders portrait. By stepping in closer my depth of field shrank. Alternatively, I can take a 75mm F1.4 lens and that will look the same way the 50 1.4 looked on the APS-C. Again, depth of field got more shallow.

End of argument.

you should just look into Sony A7 used off ebay. I just picked one up for $680 and I'm loving the FF look. MF is very easy given the EVF. Makes me wonder why I waited so long to pick one up.

Sony A7rII - 42MP
Posted By oxidized

Technically if you look at timelines, the Sony A7rII was supposed to be released in late March, early April. It was just delayed until now (unknown reason) Fast forward 6 months, we are in October/November. It could very well be an agreement similar to the ones with Nikon where Pentax could get to use the sensor 6+ months later.

As others have pointed, this is also probably the reason behind the whole FF secrecy in terms of specs and also the weird prototype. Probably per the agreement, Sony does not want to cannibalize their new product sales by selling sensors to third parties.

In addition, if you also think about it, the 36MP sensor will be almost 3 years old at the time of the 'scheduled' Pentax FF release. It makes no sense to use such an outdated sensor (even though its still great by today's standards) in a new flagship product.
