Anyone Using "Flash Brackets" any more?

Since I use two cameras when I shoot weddings, I just hold the flash in my hand. One advantage of this is that I can quickly aim the flash in any direction for bounce.

KP in the hand vs K5?

Thanks for the input from everyone. I went to the camera store and held a couple of different model cameras from a different brand. It was then that I realized how important the feel of the camera is to me. I also realized anew how good both the K1 and the K5 feel in my hand. I've decided to buy another (used) k5IIs for now. It's a classic camera that serves as my second/back-up camera and is still quite good enough for that purpose. It feels good to know something definitively about ones personal preference. Saves a lot of time and effort.

KP in the hand vs K5?

I have the impression that the KP grip is not as tall as the K5. How does it rate for fitting comfortably in hand?

Thanks,

My main concern is how long it will take. I use mine too much to be without for six to eight weeks.

K-1 tracking AF

I had a pleasant surprise when I first used my k-1. I was using the DA* 200mm + 1.4x converter, so the examples below are heavily cropped. I simply used single point, AF-C, and fast frame rate. Of course, the camera lost focus when the bird starting coming towards me, which is probably a weakness, but it seems to do parallel shooting fairly well.

Focus point very tough to see, may change camera

Is the single AF point smaller on the K-1 than the K5II? I ask because I've read this criticism before, even from the not to be named, but whose initials are dpr. Yet, I never had a problem with the K5 in this regard (subtracting my own mistakes). The disappearing AF point could actually be cast as an advantage because its disappearance is another indicator of being in focus. I can understand somewhat it may be hampering if using select AF point. Still, one should pretty much know where they are in relation to the point to be focused on. I guess constant illumination might help a little bit, but really, is it that big a deal? How did photography ever make it this far without the help of modern, technological camera razzle dazzle.

There, now I sound like a grumpy, old man.

Well, as a matter of fact, I do use Pentax professionally (in the sense that I shoot weddings, real estate, & other stuff for money). And, I have had my go arounds with Ricoh's service, several times in fact. I bought a third camera when one of mine was in the shop. I learned from conversations with Ricoh representatives that they tend to see forum bashers as being sometimes hysterical, projecting the sky is falling scenarios that are statistically incorrect.

I submit that:
- Expressing emotional agitation for warranty/repair issues is not helpful.
- It is especially unseemly for a professional, who should have his butt covered in the event of equipment failure. It so happens he has adequate equipment to shoot both his real estate gigs and his weddings without the need to rent a K1. But, who would have known that based on his histronics? No wonder Ricoh suggested that maybe he should buy another camera. And, why I assumed he had no back up. He wasn't acting like a professional.
- My suggestion is that a more rational critique of Ricoh service will be far more effective, and is, in fact, an expression of solidarity with Pentax shooters. To quote another poster on this thread: "Relax, Ari."

Here is where we differ: "but this is quite ridiculous that they are not just replacing the bodies" From your opening comments.
That is a ridiculous expectation for a warranty repair issue. Your whole thread has been overly emotional, dare I say shrill? Such intense agitation, based on a faulty premise, is really not helpful. Yes, Ricoh needs to up its game when it comes to repair service. Yes, we need to continue to apply pressure on them in hopes that this will come about. But, please do so in a rational way so your complaints will seem credible. Initially, they were not.

Could you please point to where in this thread you said you have a backup? It still escapes me. However, I think I was wrong to make that assumption. I should have asked. So, I apologize. But, I still don't understand the intensity of your agitation. Expecting a new camera instead of having yours fixed seems unrealistic. You were very fortunate that Ricoh resolved your issue the way you wanted it to. You want special consideration because you are a pro. People are always trying to make Ricoh/Pentax into something it is not. First they wanted FF, then mirror-less FF's, and now they want Ricoh to be a professional brand, with all the services, lenses, accessories, service networks, etc, it takes to cater to professional photographers. As far as I can discern, this has never been Pentax's intention. So by all means shoot with Pentax cameras, but understand that depending on them as a professional exposes you to some risks and disadvantages not associated with the professional brands.

He labeled himself a pro. Says he does 15 real estate shoots a week, and apparently some weddings. That's pro enough in my books. People contract with him to show up with a camera and pay him for it. I appreciate his position, but if he only has one camera, he is operating on a high wire, and that is not smart. Still, I too, think Ricoh's US repair operation is deplorable.

Look, I appreciate your consternation, and I'm glad for your resolution, but I have to same something here. You are quite articulate about what another business (Ricoh) should and should not do. But, your own MO is highly questionable. You are a pro, and you only have one camera? That's not very smart. It doesn't take a full frame camera to shoot real estate. You could pick up a K5 or K3 for not much money and have a back up. And, you rented "a" camera to shoot a wedding? Last weekend, one of my two cameras that I use malfunctioned during a wedding. I would never show up at a wedding with only one camera. Yet, you feel perfectly fine showing up with a rented camera that according to you may be prone to a malfunction. ???

Whew! Sounds like way too much equipment to me. You will be wondering which camera to use and the opportunity could escape. If it were me, I would take two camera bodies and my best four lenses, along with the teleconverter. Then make do with what you have. It will be plenty sufficient.

I don't see the value of rating value in reviews.

1. It is the most subject part of the review.
2. The reader knows the price, and thus has a more accurate interpretation of value (to the reader).
3. Unlike the other components in a review, the value rating will change based on price fluctuations. So, reviews with scores will invariably be outdated.
4. More times than not, value ratings lower the scores of items reviewed. No problem with lower scores, but I would prefer they were based on actual technical and functional analysis, rather than mercurial, subjective values.

That is clearly either an ignorant statement, or a disingenuous one, and reveals something very telling about the photographer. She is not really that interested in providing the clients with her best work. The link below is from one of my online mentors blog regarding this subject. His work is amazing. Enough said.

Why is Ricoh even bothering with a FF?

I can appreciate your thinking, but I don't believe Pentax is a reinvent the wheel kind of company. I think they try to cherry pick some of the best aspects of camera technology, and put that in cameras at a price point that makes them a very good value. Pentax cameras have many advantages over the Canikon models, including price, and that has made them an attractive alternative. They are a pleasure to use (ergonomically), have excellent image quality, are compact in both camera body and lenses, and have features not available in similarly priced cameras. In short, Pentax cameras are very usable, and appeal to photographers as a less expensive alternative for image producing tools. An FF will increase the range of possibilities, inviting more professional photographer participation, which will increase marketing exposure. Once the FF is launched, I suspect that a mirror-less FF will follow. Given the excellent quality of Pentax cameras, it is hard not to be excited/curious as to what their FF will offer. I already own the tres amigo lenses – 31mm, 43mm. & 77mm. I am itching to see how they perform on Pentax FF DSLR.

I usually start with the 31mm and 77mm. The 31mm pretty much stays on camera the whole time. I pull out the 21mm (or15mm when it's working correctly) for wider angled shots as needed. I use the 100mm for some telephoto and macro work. The 200mm when space allows. For receptions, I exchange the 77mm for the 70mm because it focuses much faster. As I anticipated when I purchased the 31mm, the 43mm doesn't get used that much except when that focal length is needed. I would use it more at receptions, but it doesn't focus that quickly in those circumstances. I have considered getting the 40mm again. I like the contrasty, photo quality of the DA primes when using flash at receptions. If I ever get my hands on a Pentax FF, I'm sure the 43mm will come back into more significant play.

Just so you know, I shoot weddings with two K5iis's and prime lenses. I don't understand your problems with focusing. Maybe something else focuses faster, but the k5ii works well enough for me, especially in very low light. Using flash is another story. I use only manual, off camera flash because I don't trust the pTTL. Being forced to learn manual flash was actually very good for me, but I'm looking forward to having that luxury on my next camera.

Sounds like semantics to me – postponed / delayed. Why are you so sensitive as to call the use of one word "abusive?" We may not have known the specific target date, but I give you a quote from the authors of this very own forum: "Ricoh Imaging also stated in a press release that a Pentax full-frame will hit the market by the end of the year." Do you have an original interpretation for the meaning: "hit the market?"

Same thing happened to me. I was covered by New Leaf drops warranty. They sent it to Precision. Came back and it would not focused. Returned to New Leaf who sent to Precision. This was weeks ago. Still no fixed camera. I really do not think much of Precision repair (not my only dealing with them.)
