i have using K-x video for a little while, and I don't seem to find much trouble with manual focus, once I got used to it. But, the problem actually is not AF or MF, the biggest problem I have is LCD brightness when I cannot see clearly under bright sun. It works pretty well in door or at night, as long as you remember turning right is focus far, and turning left is focus near.

Now i got it, I was aware of the second part, but not the first part, I didn't fully press down the shutter button, I guess that's the problem.

In another word, is there a way that the shutter can be released without 100% in focus, i.e., the green indicator is on. Since it's pretty hard to get the indicator to turn on, I just want to be able to take pictures when it's visibly in focus, instead spending a lot of time to focus back and forth to get the indicator on.

Yes I can take pictures with it manually, but not with catch-in focus. Just scratching my head here.

Hi, guys,
Need your advice on how to get catch-in focus to work with an A50 F1.7 lens. I have enabled the function in the menu (C-3, item 21), but it just won't trigger. I can only manually press the shutter button to take pictures. So what is missing?
Thank you guys in advance,
Sam

Thinking about getting a M or A prime lens on Ebay, what exactly is difference between M series and A series? I believe they only manual focus, how about aperture? Is it also manual when it's used on K-x? Would like to have some comment from anyone who has experience on this.

mine is working fine at least 95% of time. I occasionally got a blurred shot, but I suppose it's mostly focusing issue, really don't bother to check. Don't have that obsession for perfection on a 600 dollar product. It's been performing beyond my expectation anyway.

I believe both D5000 and K-x have this RS problem since they use similar type of sensor. Although i don't know which one is worse, anybody has any comparison? I shoot a little bit video with my K-x, so far it's not very obvious since I have tried to avoid too much panning.

Sorry, I didn't spend that much time to make my test more scientific. All I can tell is, SR works pretty well at lower shutter speed, but it's not fully effective all the time. Actually, one thing interesting i found in the manual is that it recommends SR to be turned off when a tripod is used. I actually don't know why.

Well, I don't really find a pattern there. At any shutter speed, I still get a reasonable amount of good shots. It's just that for certain speed at certain focal length, the failure rate is higher. But I still have more 50% of good shots in those situations.

That is true, I was testing at 200mm and 300mm (equivalent to 300 and 450 for 35mm). So it has to use speed above 1/200 without SR, actually, I was glad to see that SR works well for 1/20s at 300mm. Even though, it's not perfect for all the speed steps.

Did some test on SR, feels that it works best in the range between 1/20s to 1/50s, but doesn't work as well around from 1/60s to 1/100s. When it's above 1/100s, it seems that it's better to turn it off. Therefore, the shutter speed around 1/100s is a bit awkward since SR doesn't help much and the speed is not fast enough to avoid it. I don't know what you guys found about this.

I don't use Auto 5 point or 11 point, I use manual AF point selection, assign the green button to reset the point to center and use OK button to select it on the LCD. I actually don't know how auto mode works and based on what kind of principle it choose the point to focus on, therefore I don't use it, I probably need to spend a little bit more time to see if this is explained in the manual.

There is no right or wrong, there's only what you need and what you can afford. I suppose both K-x and D5000 produce decent images if you know how to use them properly. For me, I chose K-x because of the price, when I bought it on amazon at 650 for two kit lens (300mm one) while the same kit for Nikon would cost me at least 200 dollar more.
I suppose K-x is good enough for family use, but D5000 is probably a better choice if you want to use it in your work. Imaging when you want to take pictures over the heads of a crowd, you may really need that swiveling LCD in those occasions.

I usually simply use AF.C since I take pictures for my children and they keep moving, using AF.C will allow it to refocus continuously is the object moves.

actually, I never check any red dot or green hexagon, I just listen to the beep, when it's focused, it's got a beep, so that i can focus on the people instead of my camera.

Your setting is quite similar to mine. Although sometimes I would use AF.C when I try to capture moving targets like animals. Also I put the green button as resetting the focus point to center so that I can always use OK button to select and reset it whenever I want to.
However, I don't use raw, the JPEG quality seems to be good enough, and i am very satisfied with it.
Can you explain why you use the AF button instead of half pressing the shutter? Any advantage or consideration on it?

It's actually recommended in the document to use AC if you have the optional AC adaptor.

check your AF setting, use center point AF to test it instead of auto 11 point, it may have focused on some objects that you don't intend to focus on.
If this doesn't help, try a different lens, if the image comes out ok, then it's problem with your kit lens, otherwise ,the body may need some adjustment, certainly, most of the bodies shouldn't need users to do that when they r shipped out of factory, but maybe you got an exceptional one there.

Thanks, so the so-called rolling shutter effect doesn't really involve a real shutter I guess.

Excuse me guys, just having too many questions. This one is about the shutter life, it's stated as 150,000, something like that, but does movie recording use shutter as usual? I mean, if it does, recording movies using K-x may shorten its life significantly. But my guess (and my wish) is that it doesn't use it? Hope some one knows.

I am kind of a novice too, after so many years spent with those little card cameras (laziness), it's good to come back to something with some real DOF.

Hi, nice to meet everybody here. Just got my K-x with 18-55mm and 55-300mm from Amazon today. Tried it a little bit, able to take pictures, and record movies. I have seen a lot of discussion about the battery problem, just want to decide if I should upgrade the firmware. But I don't know where to find its firmware version in the menu (since I just got it, I am hoping it's already shipped with new firmware 1.0.1). Can somebody enlight me on that?
Thanks a lot,
Sam
