I have the Voigtlander 58mm f1.4. It is no slouch either. But no way am I going to buy the Pentax DFA50 at those prices. Be nice to see a comparison though if anyone has both.

Why no good deals on the KP lately ?

I picked up a KP in Oz from the distributor who was running a 3 day special for $AUD999. Equivalent to about $US710. That was a couple of weeks ago. Also picked up a K1 MkII for equivalent of $US1,700 - I couldn't resist. Compared to my old K3, which my idiot nephew dropped (autofocus not working unless you press the AF button), the KP is a real step up and the K1 MkII is simply outstanding.
Ebay was offering a 20% discount code for an Ebay discounter (official Australian reseller) so I also picked up a DFA 18-105 and a Sigma 8-16 at attractive prices. Yep, it has been an expensive month. There goes my pocket money for the next 6 months.

Bought a k1 mk-2 for $AUD2400 ($US1650. They also have a special on-line price on the KP of $AUD999. I bought one for travelling. Very happy with both. Because they look very similar my wife thinks I only bought one camera. Of course I told her it was only $900!

K3 Crazy Mirror Sickness (Mirror Flapping Lockup) - Report Yours Here!

I spoke with the repair tech at CR Kennedy (Australian distributor) today re the mirror flap problem. I had intended returning my silver some months back but thought it would be prudent to wait as I did not want it opened or replaced with a black. From reading a few posts and other info on the web, only the authorised repairers have been able to undertake the firmware update to resolve? the problem.
Well, the repair guy has now informed me that the mirror flap firmware update has been included in firmware update 1.10 and that there is now no need to be sent for repair. It has not been documented by Ricoh (as usual). Fingers firmly crossed.

I have just read the posts relating to mirror flap in K-5's.
Seems to relate to charge in battery(s) though I don't know if it was eventually resolved
Any thoughts?

K3 Silver
Serial no 2573016
No idea how to check number of shutter operations but not many
Silver grip
Genuine pentax batteries. Full charge
Variety of pentax lenses mostly DA*50-135 and DA 10-17 and with Tamron 17-50
SD Card 1 is Sandisk Extreme 32Gb class10. Ditto card 2.
So far have had a couple of lockups and crazy Live View on/off
Two instances of mirror flap. Only stopped with battery removal (in camera not grip)
One instance of sudden inability to focus in poor contrast even though I had taken quite a few photos immediately prior, same conditions and same subject matter. Solution only resolved by using spot focus. Returned to normal after a good lie down.
Reported to Oz distributor. Initial response was to bring in for check though I haven't done that yet as they do not have any silvers available at the moment if an exchange is contemplated
After discussing this with the service guy he asked me to return it for examination and service
I will post the outcome when known
I have been using my K-5II mostly since this occurred.
I think it will take a while to resolve though the distributor (CR Kennedy) is very good and has a close relationship with Ricoh/Pentax Japan. All of the principals speak fluent Japanese and are long standing distributors of all of the Pentax products - not just cameras. I referred them to this website
I have posted this elsewhere

I have had the K3 crazy focus thing along with the live view lockups and shutter flap
Only solution to focus problem was to switch to spot focus for a while then rest camera ASAP.
Seemed to help resolve after removing battery. Camera may need ECT (electro convulsive therapy-sick joke)
Local distributor (Oz) seems unaware of these problems

I just got off the phone to Corey at Sydney office of CRK in Oz.
He had not heard of this problem but he has sent a report to the techs.
I'm not expecting anything much to happen but given that there is a new batch of silvers due in I may see if I can get a swap happening. They may of course choose to simply do a reset and return. I'll see what happens and post the details.

---------- Post added 02-13-2014 at 06:14 PM ----------

With each new camera model a bunch of weird behaviour or hardware issues seem to arise
I know companies like Ricoh rely on distributors to resolve these issues but it would be great if we could report them directly to Ricoh especially for small markets where the quality of distributors is a problem.

Well we all seem to be perplexed including Ricoh/ Pentax from all accounts.
How do we get their attention?
Perhaps our esteemed moderator can suggest a way.
Poll? Suggestions? Bueller?

Received a reply from the local distributor suggesting I return the camera. They think it may be a hardware issue. No car at the moment so will wait till the moment presents itself. In the meantime will be interested to see if the problem persists with firmware 1.02

Have had the machine gun mirror once so far and after notifying the local distributor they suggested a hardware problem and to return it. It would seem that this is an intermittent fault that quite a few of us have experienced and not necessarily hardware related. What do you think? Return it or not? It is a silver.

Add me to the list. Happened once so far. Have reported it to CRKennedy today. Will await response and let you know
It seems fairly random considering the variety of camera configurations.
Just for the record mine is K3 silver with grip and pentax batteries. Battery charge indicated full in the body. Did not check the grip.
I think I was using Av mode with a pentax 50-135 (my favourite lens) - could have been a tamron 17-50 though. Weather was around 23C and dry.
The other weird thing was the inability of the 27 point focus gizmo to focus in non contrasty bright light. Don't remember my k7 or k5ii being this fussy. Switched to spot and then ok.
Running firmware 1.01

You'll be upset (like I was) that there were 5 Silvers for sale at the official launch on Tuesday with bonus lens etc. I was a tad miffed seeing as mine hadn't arrived.Should have cancelled my order but it finally arrived yesterday. Try calling Clem Kennedy directly. He may be able to sort it out for you. Good luck

The guy in the grey suit owns DigiDirect and the guy on the right won the K-3. The deals offered were generous with 5 silvers up for sale and bonus lenses and high speed SD cards along with various other discounted stuff. Pity I preordered the silver which I finally received yesterday. I bought a DA 55-300 in a moment of weakness. A few goodies in the show bag too. Free booze and classy canapés, chance to chat with other Pentaxians and Kennedys etc. Found out that Peter Blesina was a photo journo in a previous life. All in all a great night. Oh and the girls weren't hard to look at though I'm sure they're used to a lot of drooling.

Does the Flucard run warm?

Can anyone help me to get the flucard to work in my K3? According to the menu there is no wireless card in slot 2. Yet the flucard is clearly trying to do something coz it is hot when I take it out and stare at it wondering why, oh why did CRK send me this instead of a decent high speed sd card?

Well you're not the only one waiting unfortunately. We may miss out on our silvers.
After contacting CRK I received the following reply:

"Sorry for the late reply Stephen, overseas short supplied us with this model, my manager is currently overseas.

Once I hear back from him I will send you another email updating you.

Kind Regards

Michelle"

Keeping fingers and toes crossed.
I will of course take this up with CRK at the official launch on Tuesday but I don't expect an answer.
Maybe I'll get lucky and win the lucky door prize (a silver), stranger things have happened.

I know this sounds a tad naive but does anyone know whether silver editions are more 'quality checked' than the black editions or is it purely cosmetic?

Lucky me pre-ordered a silver from CR Kennedy. They are now sold out. I don't care that the Ricoh brand is on the back - shows commitment. I don't care that it is APS-C - smaller and all lenses can be used. Uses same batteries as my K7, K01s, and K5II. All in all looks promising.
