Pentax K3, random color balance and exposure after tripod fall
Posted By Diffusion

It happened with several lenses.
But it turns out that the white balance was set to manual and the picture mode to crossover.
Oops.

I do not think the fall did all this, so I am scratching my head now - how did this happen? But it looks to be fixed.

On the K3, do you guys normally choose "natural" or "bright"?

Pentax K3, random color balance and exposure after tripod fall

Dear all,

My trust K3 (MK1) workhorse recently tipped over with the tripod and hit the relatively soft soil of the woods. I was not worried about it at first, as it continued to work fine, take pictures, etc...

However, I later realized that after that fall, the exposure and white balance was being weird. Pictures sometimes were purple or yellow, and underexposed to varying degrees.

The white balance is secondary, since I shoot raw, and Rawtherapee automatically corrects it after importing.

But the exposure is more problematic, as I often lose details in darker parts.

Any idea of what might have "broken" in the camera, and is there any way to fix it? Or do I need to buy a new body?

So a full plastic 35/2.4 is available at Nikkor 35/1.8 price?

I agree with you, and yet I do not. 2.4 does not mask any AF or MF errors. If I know I have to mask any focusing errors I go to F4-F6.

I am really surprised at all the comments here.
Everyone was grunting and groaning that Pentax does not have a beginner prime lens that is cheap and affordable.
I used to shoot wide open on the K10D because I needed to. But for "normal" pictures, you best stay at 2.8 or so. And face it, the people buying this lens want "normal" picture, and with a K-x or K-r, you can shoot at 2.8 indoors even low light if necessary.
If you are an artiste, this lens indeed is not for you. But Pentax needs to sell lots of lenses, not a few to specialists.

The one and only question for this lens will be if it is better at 2.4 and especially 2.8 than any of 2.8 zooms in that region. If this lens performs wide open, it is a winner. If it needs to warm up to 4.0 to be sharp, it is a loser lens.

Pondering first dslr purchase, need some guidance

Let me preface by saying that the K-x is just the right camera for me. I wish it had been out when I first bought Pentax.

* It has all the features I need.
* Love the high ISO capabilities. (Hated having to shoot at 800 ISO, now shoot at 3200 quite often).
* It is compact
* The price was VERY right.

I did not comment on your points about buying new/used and the price of the K-x. The K-x is more than competitively priced considering how well it sells, and not finding any used just shows that people rarely part with it after having purchased it. So, I do not see that as cons to the K-x.

From what you said, it does not sound like you will be using the kit lens much (not good for candids or macros), so a WR lens will cost a lot of $$$. Then, a sealed body is kind of moot. I have one weather sealed lens, the 16-50, but neither my K10D nor the K-x have seen much rain action.
Yes, it would be nice to have, but at what price.

I felt the same way, and now I do not anymore. The batteries last a long time, even the supplied alkaline ones, and they are easier and cheaper to replace. My kit came with an eneloop charger and battery set, so that made it even easier.

I used his extensively on the K10D. I would miss this a lot less if the center AF point was smaller. I would say this is one of the bigger drawbacks, but still, I does not bother me.

Can't decide : Tamron 28-75mm or 17-50mm

17-50 or 16-50 is a very useful focal lens. But people shots are often not very flattering below 25-30mm.

I would have a look at a Sigma 24-70, either with or without SDM. It is supposedly a decent lens, I was considering buying it, but have not so far (lack of funds, plus I have a 16-50).

What do you use most Raw or Jpeg

RAW, predominantly that I cannot be bothered to set a WB manually, or to trust auto WB. In RAW, I just change it later without loss of quality.
I shot one day with JPEG, lost some nice pictures because I was still on Tungsten in daylight, had a nice bluecast and could recover only to BW.
Yes, a user error, but RAW is just more convenient (for me).

The 10k€ price, however, was with a lens, so I figure 9k€ for the body only (I do not think that there are "cheap" kit lenses for MF), and you are back to about a factor of two.

Let's wait and see when it arrives.

Pentax France answers 3 important questions

Frankly, I read the original article, and it just sounds like they keep Pentax France largely in the dark about what is in the pipeline or not, but he does not want to say so.

I mean, "oh, I am not sure we will have the 645D in Europe. But if we will, it will cost you about 10k". Who says that, unless you have given it some thought?

Still, interesting read. Thanks for posting.

1

What SDM lenses do/did you own? List which ones you did owned and which ones you now do own.
16-50

Which ones were bought used and which ones are bought new?
16-50 new

How long have you owned which ones?
16-50 for 1 year
50-135 for 1 years
300 for 6 months

Which lens have not failed on you?

Which ones have failed on you once?
none

Which ones have failed after SDM repair?
none

If it failed on you would you send it in for repairs? If no, why?
Yes.

If one failed on you, how would that change your view on Pentax if it does all?
Not sure. Yes, I would be displeased, but I know that most companies have occasional issues with QC to save a $ or two.

Sigma steps up.

EDIT: Before I blabber on, here is Sigma's take on it: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1036&message=34594332&q=OS+SR&qf=m (well, by way of a forum post)...

While R&D is indeed there to make things that are impossible possible, the work would have to be done on the Pentax SR, because it would need to respond properly to the OS of the Sigma lens, by doing the fine compensation the OS system still cannot do.

This is certainly an interesting proposal, in that Pentax cameras could realize that there is an OS lens attached, and have a pre-programmed pattern on how the SR should react to each motion, knowing that the OS will cover most of the movement.

It is possible that Pentax has done this. I highly doubt it, but it is possible.

The other way around, as I thought was suggested, would not be feasible. In such a coupled system, the lens stabilization would always have to do the brute adjustment, with the SR doing the fine adjustment.

Well, let's wait and see until someone does a test with it in real life. Since 24-70 OS and 18-250 OS lenses are already out, someone probably tested it already.

The "logic" is price. An "OS" lens sells for more than no "OS".
Also, some people argue that lens stabilization is better. The consensus appears to be that for long lenses, lens stabilization is better, because any movement is grossly exaggerated on the sensor, and the movement speed and accuracy become an issue.
Regarding the idea that SR and OS play nicely... How would that be possible? The SR measures how much the body moves around, and compensates. But it does not see that OS is active, so it compensates the motion, which has already been cancelled out by OS. It actually introduces shake.

And yes, the main reason why they offer it for Pentax is because they already offer it for Canon and Nikon. Much larger volumes, and OS is needed there. Taking out all the optical elements associated with OS, and you might as well redesign the lens.
Fortunately, you can turn OS off on the lens, or SR on the camera.

No, no, no. It is one or the other. Both will actually interfere badly with each other.
Basically, OS is most interesting for long lenses.

Lack of LBA
Posted By Diffusion
Replies: 18
In the last few months, a very interesting phenomenon occured to me - lack of LBA.
After my recent purchases of the Tamron 70-210 SP 3.5 and the Samyang 85mm 1.4, I really honestly do not lust after more lenses, even ones that I had considered before.

A50 1.2? Nah, A50 1.7 is good enough.
Pentax DA* 60-250/4? Much bigger than the Tamron, do not need the wide end, not much longer.
Tamron 70-200/2.8? Well, it is faster by about a stop (the 70-210 is best starting at F4), but I would rarely need to use it.
31mm ltd? The 35/2 works just fine and the bokeh is good enough.

But, there are two reasons for this change:
a) The K-x and being able to shoot at ISO 1600 and 3200 without worries.
b) Installation of a split-focusing screen.

What I find is that for decent people shots, I usally need to dial-in F/2.8 anyway. In the past, I often went to F/2 because I did not have enough light for the K10D. For certain artistic shots, I have 3 focal lengths where I can go down to F/2 or better.

In any case, I am still impressed at how inexpensive some of the gear can still be (The Tamron Adaptall was rather cheap) and still get excellent results.

Hmm, never quite experienced this myself, but I stopped shooting with the kit lens a long time ago. Wide open it is just not that good.

SR will always be active if enabled, never mind the shutter speed.

I would borrow someone else's lens to see if the problem goes away.

I posted this three weeks ago in here.
The Travor screen indeed goes "backwards" into the camera.

Try the following:

First put in the metal shims, then the Travor screen "backwards", then the retainer clip.
Focus is spot-on on my K-x like this.

We really gotta make a sticky about the Travor screen going backwards.
The first time, I had absolutely everything dust free, second time, not so much.

Poll: Do SDM problems affect your purchasing

Hmm, there was a similar poll just recently, but I guess this is the topic of interest at the moment.

No, they do not. What we see mostly right now is a lot of early SDM lenses failing. Any lens purchased today comes at least with 1yr warranty, often 2yrs warranty. The problem is most likely known and fixed internally, but will not be communicated. Occasional SDM failures will still occur and increase insecurity, but there are a lot fewer problems reported on newer lenses compared to older ones.

I like A lenses, otherwise I might have picked the 200mm lens.

The FA35 is one of my workhorse lenses, so the choice is easy.

Regarding the A50/1.2 ... Yes, it is an excellent lens, but for me, the 1.7 version is plenty fast and has excellent IQ, that I cannot even unleash always.
Frankly, even with the A50/1.7, the best portraits happen at 2.8, at which point it is as sharp as the A50/1.2.

Not speaking for the OP, but it is too expensive to be the only "fast 50" in the current line-up.
Especially with everyone and their dutch uncle buying a K-x or K-7 at the moment, old lens supplies will dry up nicely.

The A50 f/2 is plenty fast, you are right. The point people are trying to make is that the F/1.7 and F/1.4 are more usable at F/2 (well, sharper that is). Really, nothing you can do wrong with an A50 f/2, they will perform very well for the money. But be on the lookout for an F/1.7
