Need a FAST + SHARP prime for K-x

I'm looking for a fast and sharp prime for low light portrait/everyday shooting.

This prime will stay on my K-x 99% of the time since I've learned I'm a prime lover after using one on my old Nikon D40. Prime + option of bounce flash = :D

The two I am looking at right now are the 43mm Limited and 50mm FA 1.4

On my current 35mm 1.8 I find myself closing the aperture to about 2.2 - 2.5 unless I need it fully open since the DOF is so small to get a portrait with two people (mom/baby) without one way out of focus and also my nikon prime wide open is quite soft (like all primes) -- Therefore....there may be no different in the 50mm being faster unless one is sharper than other at 2.2 or so.

I also think I will enjoy the 40-50mm range since I find myself needing to be a bit closer with the 35mm (up-close and personnel)

Am I on the right track? (without breaking the bank with the 31 Limited....also too wide)

K-X : Throughly Unimpressed (Disappointed)

It does seem there may be focus issues I will have to resolve or possibly get a replacement. I read up on the articles which were posted.

When I first received the D40 (used) -- I was utterly blown away by the pictures it could take with the kit lens that came with it. I was hoping to be as impressed with the K-x which I was not. Whether it has to do with settings or the debug menu I have to tinker with...I am not sure.

On paper though, the K-x seems to be the perfect camera for my needs (low light/indoor shooting). I have not taken the 35mm 1.8 prime off the D40 since I purchased it and hope to get a nice prime for the K-x if everything works out. The only feature I miss with the D40 + prime combo is the image stabilization as most of my shots are hand-held and this is the primary reason I choose to purchase a Pentax.

I am just disappointed the camera hasn't taken the excellent pictures I had expected out of the box.

Time to find a decent prime....currently looking at the 43mm Limited but still need to read up a bit more.

The 35mm prime on the Nikon is nice but I feel I could use a little more zoom (40-50mm) -- I hear the 77mm Limited is real nice but I'm afraid that might be too much zoom for indoor shooting.

Thanks everyone for the replies and not taking my reservations on my purchase on a personal level.

Gokenin,

All shots of text were done with the K-x. The other part of that post referring to the Nikon Lens was answering a separate question on which lenses I was using on the first post of the thread with the portrait shots.

keyser,

I understand this and plan to purchase a prime for the K-x. I am not sure which one to get yet. Have any suggestions?

I posted a picture of the focus in last post on page 2.

How do i fix this? It appears to be front focusing a bit.

Does pentax not check this before shipping to distributors? You would think on an entry-level camera where consumers aren't going to be changing/checking these types of things to have it right out of the box.

Well...you must consider the D40 pictures were hand-held at 1/30 without stabilization and then compressed in order to upload to the site.

Sorry about the focus test....I should listen better.....here is new pic

Thanks all for the replies and helping hand.

I can take pictures with the D40 and its kit lens if you really think thats the issue? I know its not since I've used that lens for awhile before purchasing the prime. That's not the issue. The D40 will still take better pictures with its kit lens than i am getting and it never had a focus issue with over 10k actuations.

A nice prime? It was $199 -- there shouldn't be that much difference

I took two shots in macro mode and aperture priority with ONLY the K-x to show the focus on the camera like was suggested.

I'm more interested in getting the K-x on par with my expectations as opposed to only comparing to other cameras.

I want my dang camera to take decent pictures while enjoying stabilization and high ISO!!!!!

Aperture priority mode on left or top.....Macro Mode with flash on right or bottom (depending on your computer's resolution)

Using a Nikon AF-S 35mm F/1.8 and Pentax 18-55mm kit lens @ 35mm

Hinman,

The K-x is the camera choosing 1/60 while the D40 is choosing 1/30.

So the K-x is shooting at faster shutter speed WITH stabilization and still has more blur than the D40 without stabilization at 1/2 the shutter speed.

Agree Eruditass. That's a good shot but not low light which is most important to me.

The K-x is just not getting the pics I want in low light.

This is a recurring theme in the 50 or so shots I have taken in the past day comparing the D40 and K-x.

I am shooting in highest JPEG which is already pretty ridiculous with 5-6mb per picture. I have the D40 set on normal jpeg with 1-1.5mb files average and still getting better shots IMO.

There has to be some secret setting or something I am missing.

I understand lighting is important....but the lighting in the pics I am taking are identical when compared to the D40 and the camera should select the best options for ISO and shutter speed. No way it is camera shake as the D40 has NO IS and is taking at slower speeds.

I was excited to receive my K-X after using a Nikon D40 for about a year as I am a low-light shooting freak and loved the fact I could use primes with stabilization and high ISO capabilities, but the pictures that are coming out of my K-X are looking like trash compared to the D40 lacking the 3D feel that the D40 brought to me when first purchasing a DSLR. The pictures also look very soft.

What is wrong here?

Not to mention the K-x files are approx. 4 times the size. Where is the data going?

HELP me get this thing right.

Shot in aperture priority mode on both cameras using center focus.

In all photos taken so far no matter what the lighting conditions, the K-x photos seem to be dull and lifeless in comparison. Lacking dynamics and 3D look.

I've loved the way photos are on the D40 but get blur on photos taken slower than 1/30 so I was hoping the in camera IS on the K-x would be my ticket.
