Thanks all for your input.

Camera is in for repairs for a "Diaphragm control block".
Hopefully should be back in a few weeks.

Steve, Mike and LarryMC thanks.

Using the DOF Preview, settings are, Lens in auto aperture, camera set at AF, Mode on M, DOF preview on Optical (std default and confirmed via customisation menu).
Looking through the front of the lens and actuating aperture blade icon (camera On/off switch).

-Only thing consistent is at F1.8 no sound nor movement as expected i think.
-Battery was running low and had very inconsistent results, changed to a fully charge battery.
-at varying f's 10,16, 20, 22 i can see the blades stop down with corresponding iris sizes in relation to the f numbers.
-same results on Av.
-same results on the 77mm (much better lens to test with, larger and can see the blades in detail action)

Unfortunately test shots on both still showing blown highlights.

Thanks to all so far.

ok 31 on camera.
M Mode
Front Dial Shutter speed set at 2 sec
back dial Aperture set F22.
Whilst looking into the lens from the front test fire 5 shots.
Repeat over various Fs down to F1.8. and vice versa.

All i see throughout the test shots through the front end of the lens;
- Yes when pressed it goes dark, at the end of each shot back to lighter colour, indicating movement of aperture blades. **Clarifying i don't actually see detailed blades.
- all very consistent through the F ranges, all speeds being held during the shots, if anything marginally longer at F22 than on F1.8.

Thanks Steve, for your patience, does the above help?

Hi Steve,
Thanks, have done a few on the few lenses i have and nothing unusual that i can see.
Tried the DA 12-24 and looks like zooms are not affected, ran through once again the 40,100WR same problems.

Finding it odd, usually shooting AV, my main concern is Aperture priority, sharpness across the picture, bokeh effect etc.. and the shutter speed is automatic and never take notice of it, esp during outdoor daylight shots.
Unless low light, utilising faster glass, monitoring the shutter speed to avoid the shakes. Other than that i usually let the camera do the shutter speed.

Regards

Whilst I sort my upload photo limits, i have reset default settings at the end of C24 settings.

Mounted the 77 and the issues are still present.
Set the camera to fully auto mode Green rectangle, and still same issue.

I will investigate the aperture lever issue.

Tks and Rgds

Morning all,

I have not touched any settings from yesterday, tried the 31 then 77, same effect.

Checked the following;
-vibrant to natural, nil effect (also check individual Parameter Adj, all set neutral 0)
-AWB to daylight to cloudy, nil effect.
-no ev settings.
-multi focal to spot, nil effect.
-Tried TAv, set at F5.0, started at 1/250, 1/400. to 1/6400, similar affect as AV, higher speed darkens picture, but blown lighter highlights.
-checked all on camera mount pins (altho all were dimple except 1 flat)

Will check menu settings and set ups (as per forum's preferred K3 setting).
Failing these i will factory default reset.

Cheers

Thought I had a sensor burning out scenario but looks like it is more user error or the lack of understanding.

Historically, I only ever shoot AV, started with the K7 and sort of stuck in that area, learning a little about exposure, depth of field, bokeh and not quite master of it yet.
Quite happy with the results and never progress further skill wise, due to the lack of time and practice. Unfortunately K7 got stolen, upgraded to K3. And with the K3 being a "next gen" leap
from the K7, it's challenging me more, as i dont recall having this kind of problems with the K7.

Anyway back to the problem at hand.
- bunch of white and purple flowers was intentionally stopped down to 1.8, thats the only way i could get some decent exp without blow outs. It's a grey cloudy noon day, and at f4 and upwards would have been whitewashed,
with heavy purple fringing around the white petals. (note the odd single purple flower within the bunch of whites, looks like an odd artefact)

I will do more testing tomorrow and advise whether i can make heads or tails of it, thanks for all your suggestion.

Don't get me wrong, today was the first time that was completely stumped, but otherwise 90% of other times as follows;

Thanks
Ken

Forgive me, I just take Jpeg SOOC, and never do any post processing let alone use silkypix, and load onto Photos on Mac.
The above 2 photos were just reduced in size for upload using the Macs simple preview adjustment, hence may have lost data attachment.

Ole, yes aperture ring on A for the 31 and 77.

Hopefully the following 4 photos, uploaded directly untouched will have data, otherwise will have to do some reading tonight about EXIF data.

Regards
Ken

Hi all,

I need help, today I mounted the 31mm on the K3, and all shots were overblown. Could not fix it on camera and even removing the battery and resetting.
Came home, tried with 40,77,100wr and all are like that. Tried with 16-85, which is the main lens and even that is hit and miss with the few shots I got.

Can i preface this by saying that i notice this problem intermittently since last August (unlike the K7 which i had before, no such issues).
And are terrible with red colours. See red/yellow flower IMGP3001 from last year, and the other image from today's shots.

I hope this is not a sensor issue.

Thanks and Regards

D FA 100/2.8 WR owners: problem?

Hi Todd,

Pulled out my other lens to compare, Da18-55mm kit lens, S-M-C 50f1.4, Da 40 and Da 12-24.
For what it's worth, my copy does not show any signs of being sticky, snappy just like the others. Lined up the modern lenses side by side, used my index finger, flicked and felt the tension of the aperture lever spring. I can feel some tension difference, 12-24 and 40 are the same and firmer (spring tension) than the 18-55&100mm. But overall still snappy.

What I did notice was that the 100mm WR, when it snaps it does sounds tinny compared to the others, which i put down to the lighter longer hollow feel metal barrel. The SMC 50F1.4 needless to say sounded fast, firm and solid.

Not scientific but hope it helps.

Cheers

Hi all,

Ok it's been 2 months now, Dad's 1971nish s-m-c super takumar 50 F1.4 is on my K7. Been taking a lot of pictures, learning heaps (as in doing things manually), and enjoying some of the results.

As per the various stickies on how to's & instructions around regarding these types of lens/camera arrangements, i have been shooting this way;
-MF, M mode, spot metering.
-adjusting the required Aperture by manually rotating the aperture ring on the lens
-press green button so that the camera can read the amount of light that the aperture which was manually set at, and thus also automatically set shutter speed required.
-half press the shutter, and adjust focus manually, more often than not, relying on the focus indicator (hexagonal icon), blinking red square and the buzzing sound in view finder, then continued full press of the shutter to capture the shot.

Sorry about the silly question but why does the last part not work for F10 to F16? all seem to fine with from F1.4 to F8. The camera provides no assistance in focusing at F10 or lower.

Best Regards,
Ken.

Thanks Steve,

Looked into the body, from the lens end without the lens attached, saw the mirror staring at me at a 45 degree showing a mirror image of the focus screen. Saw the foam material that act as a bumper, and for a split second (without thinking :( ) ran my finger over it, it's dried and flaked all over the mirror. Thanks for the warning, will have to get it replaced, before i start using it. All ok for the battery compartment, no leaks and even replaced a new battery and works.

Speaking of the lens, whilst doing the UV thing, noticed a few (3-4) really black spots in the lens, not on the front or rear lens. Looks like it is on the intermediate lenses. This does not look like fungus as seen in some pictures, considering i have not shot with this lens before, i will wait and see what the results will be before considering sending it in for a professional clean. I will not DIY, albeit not much monetary value, i will still treat this lens with great sentimental value.

Best regards
ken

Happy New Year...

Well, just to keep everyone posted on my progress and what I have found so far. Hopefully, this can assist any beginners like me.

1) found exactly which lens this is, which is a Asahi part no# 37902, made for only a couple years 1971-1972, so this is really "limited" in those days. Very helpful website Asahi optical historical club. Cleared up alot of confusion as to which lens it is, chronology, super tak vs s-m-c vs smc, etc....

2) Ordered an OEM Pentax mount adaptor k through Cr Kennedy in Australia, approx $45. Waiting for it to arrive.

3) Bought a black light from the hardware store and after 2 days of exposing the rear element to it with the foils and a homemade foiled lined tissue box, some noticeable differences, the yellowing is clearing up.
Another thing i did noticed whilst trawlling thru the web, that i could unscrew the rear element (focus to infinity to bring the rear element out and gently grip the ring around the lens, unscrew counter clockwise), that's when i noticed the rear element was not yellowing or not that yellow compared to the second lens from the rear. So with all the discussions around it being the rear element, well at least with my s-m-c tak, it's the 2nd from the rear.

4) Dad's spotmatic 2, is in mint condition, and when i get confident in photography, i will give it a shot. Cannot get my head around not being able to veiw the immediate results of a shot like any modern camera can. ( note to oneself, why not carry both?? :) )

Cheers to all.

Hi interested observer,

Thank you very much for the quick reply, and yes it was very helpful. It confirms what i have read so far on this excellent forum.

For a time there, i was thinking did i make a wrong decision on the k7 as the prices for the primes like the DA*55 f1.4 is over AUD$1k here, as opposed to the much cheaper primes from Nikon. Luckily, i have dad's much touted Tak.

This will be a cheaper and great way to start on manual focusing as well. Btw, just checked with pentax australia, they do have the adapter part number 30120 available here.

Cheers and best regards,
ken

Hello all,

I am very new to DSLR or photography for that matter. Got interested when my brother took some excellent photos of the niece and nephews on his D90, and was hooked on the precious memory snapshots. Anyway, just bought the k7 after 6 months of researching around and absolutely pleased with it.

Showed it off to the brother and dad, and dad from his many archived boxes pulls out a spotmatic 2 bought in the early 70s. Totally amazed by the bulit of these things, makes the D90 feel lightweight, not so much against the k7.

I have read through the articles and reviews on the forum and attached are some photos.

Questions;
1) Can i use this lens on the k7? looks like the earlier version of super takumar smc lens as per lense review (m42 screw mount normal primes)? please confirm which lens this is?

2) If yes, then i would need adapter, which is going to be struggle to get in Perth western australia, so will find a way somehow. Would there be any warranty issues using a non OEM adaptor? Or it is just like usage of any third party accessory, e.g flashs, memory card etc. ( i am aware of the issue regarding ill fitting adaptors, flange/non flange etc. through the articles, so will be careful).

3) UV cleansing, the lens has a slight yellowish tone after 30 odd years sitting in the closets. As described in some of these articles, to cleanse this, is it just a case of opening up the blades and leaving it in the sun for an extended period of time to improve?

Wishing all a happy new year and a safe festive season. Thank you for your time and assistance.

Ken.
