That would be nice. I've done that before, just can't get good angles with a tripod in the way. Thanks for the suggestion!

I agree Norm. I had that K-5II pulled up and in the cart....then I read about the battery and decided getting along with my husband is more important right now than quality low light images. IF this doesn't work, I'm going to order a K-5 II and we'll have to work through the problems that will result from my lack of frugality.

I just ordered a new battery. Though I would LOVE a new camera, I will be extremely relieved if this solves my problem. Though the K20 does not perform as I would like, it will keep peace in my home if I do not spend an extra $800 for a new camera right now.

There's a thought. I had no idea. What is the expected lifespan? Mine are all around 3-4 years old. That doesn't seem ancient to me.

Thanks for the opinion. I ALWAYS shoot RAW. :D I have still had a lot of trouble with noise on my high iso/low fstop shots. Even with shake reduction on, I simply can't get good focus with low shutter speed hand held. :( Like I said, I don't do this professionally any more, but if I'm going to buy a new camera, I want to have the option to get back into it should I desire. Garbage in = garbage out, so I'd rather produce images that don't require a lot of extra editing to clean up. ;)

K-5 II no noise reduction function? Does that seem to effect image quality?

Gotta take a look at the K-01, but at first glance, it looks pretty "basic".

I currently have a K20 that is crashing....won't keep the battery charged. Instead of sending it in for repair AGAIN, I'm thinking of upgrading. I have gotten out of photography as a profession, however I still want to take quality family portraits, so I'm thinking of a new body. I've noticed the models I've used have lack in quality portraits in low light, even with a 1.8 lens. Is there a Pentax that does well in low light? I will not be able to buy new lenses, so the new body has to be compatible with DA lenses. My main portrait lens is a DA 50-135, low light being the fixed 1.8.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Those are some awesome shots Gary. Do you remember approx. how you shot them? SS/AP/lens and any other info. you can give me? I am going to go look for comparisons between the Samsung and the Pentax ISOs right now.

Thanks!

I'm sorry I misinterpreted your response. I just don't use certain words, so when someone uses them on me, they come across as very strong.

I am going to have someone with me as a second shooter. I have used my external flash on a tripod and with an umbrella remotely before, I just wasn't picturing how it would cover a large area. Again, I'm assuming a lot of moving from one place to another, not all activity in one place. I'll think about it a little more and perhaps it'll come together and make sense before the wedding! And yes, "where to place the lighting" is the question that this has turned into.

I have read my manual, and being rude isn't necessary. I am fully aware that my flash has remote ability, I just don't have multiple flashes, and in my experience, there is a lot of moving around the room, therefore my issue is about how to know where to put the lights, NOT HOW TO USE THEM!!!!!!!!!

Everyone keeps mentioning multiple flash set ups. I'm wondering how you do this at a wedding and reception where people are moving around constantly? I don't have more than one 540 anyway, so I won't be able to shoot that way, but I'm wondering how it's done.

I guess I'll look into buying the external battery pack. I will also google strobist techniques. Also, the room in which I will be working my next wedding has a very high ceiling, so bouncing off of that won't be an option. I do have the diffuser, so I am able to get decent shots by just angling the flash head slightly.

Thanks for the info. I usu. set it to ttl when I use the flash. There are times with this flash that it will shoot mulit frames, perhaps it is the batteries?

Can you be a little more specific about equipment? I don't really understand the reference to "big potato-masher flashes", nor do I know anything about "belt-worn battery packs". I have a 2.8 zoom lens that I would LOVE to use, so if I can make that happen, I'd really like that!

Thanks so much!

Thanks for the comments everyone. I also have a Gary Fong diffuser for my flash, but that doesn't help the problem of not being able to shoot multi frame. :(

I have the 540. I am mostly talking about reception use, so I am looking at NO LESS THAN a shutter speed of 1/125 to catch the motion. This is an Hispanic wedding, and the way I understand it, there is a lot of stuff that goes on at the reception that's more important than the ceremony.

I currently have a K20D and the fastest lens I have is the 50 mm 1.4. I have still found that it doesn't do well in dark rooms (such as for wedding receptions or sometimes even in the church itself) without a flash. Obviously the problem I am seeing is the fact that it takes the flash EONS to recycle, I can't get multiple frames when using the flash, and the fact that a flash is just too invasive in certain situations. When I am in a place where I can crank up the ISO and get a good amount of light, I am just not at all happy with the noise I see past ISO 400.

Thank you for the response Gene. The problem with using P-TTL is that I can not shoot continuously. :(

using the external flash?

I am new to using the external flash and I currently have two AF-540FGZs for my K20. I am wanting to use these wirelessly, using one to slave the other with a Gary Fong diffuser to shoot a family session where they will be in front of the water @ sunrise. I am needing to light them so I can meter for the water and keep it from blowing out. ANYWAY....I have discovered that I have to shoot in M (manual?) mode at 1/16 or higher in order to keep the flashes firing continuously. Here's the question....how do I determine the output? I confess I do not know what the 1/16 means, but I believe that has something to do with how much light the flash generates. I need the flash to be pretty strong because I am going to have to have a pretty low f-stop in order to not blow out the background. Does that all make sense? I hope someone can set me straight. Thanks!
