Does anyone know if this is different in K-5?

I see.. I didnt know the situation with the K-7. It does not make sense to me as well. Why would I have to keep my hand on the shutter release button (even if the body is on a tripod) when taking auto-bracketed shots, which are very sensitive to any blur for HDR post-processing? Disabling the self-timer and the remote control in this case is just hard to explain. I am looking at this as a firmware design issue. Combining shooting mode and drive mode into one setting seems to be the root cause.
FYI; I just started a new thread in the K-r Discussion forum asking K-r owners if the new firmware of K-r is making any improvements here.
Thx,
ertan.

Thats indeed good news. Actually, I did not even realize that Remote Control 3-sec delay was not available for HDR mode in K-x but I just checked and it is not selectable so K-r firmware seems to improve that. That is neat.
My issue with HDR mode was simply about regular self-timer (initiated with shutter release button) not being available on K-x.
I went thru the relevant sections of the K-r manual from the above link and did not find any explicit or implied info that behavior is different from K-x. So, as of now I have to assume that it is same as K-x (except the Remote Control 3-sec delay improvement).
I also looked for an answer in the K-r manual for my more general question about the Drive Mode behavior but did not find anything that tells me it works different from K-x, so I am assuming it still same as K-x, unless some K-r owner confirms otherwise.

What I am saying is that (HDR with remote control firing) scenario works, but HDR shot triggered with self-timer is not allowed on K-x. Is that possible with K-r?
Also, the bigger issue about Drive Mode (as I tried to explain in my first post) . Is it any different in K-r?

I like my K-x but this particular usability issue is pretty bad. It is just bad design of the K-x firmware that two different controls such as Drive Mode and Shooting Mode are combined to be a "Drive Mode" setting and therefore Self-Timer drive or Remote Control drive (i.e. how shots are triggered) are considered mutually exclusive with the type of shooting (single vs. continuous vs. bracketed shooting).
This leads to problems like not being able to do exposure bracketing initiated with the self-timer or remote control and requires my hand on the body to make such shots.
Also probably related to this design, one can not trigger HDR mode shooting with the self-timer and this can only be done manually by pressing the shutter release or using the Remote Control unit.
I wonder if the K-r firmware improves this design and allows more flexibility in this area?
Thx,
ertan.

+1 on this issue..
I like my K-x but this particular usability issue is pretty bad. It is just bad design of the firmware that "Drive Mode" and "Shooting Mode" are combined and things like Self-Timer drive or Remote drive (i.e. how shoots are triggered) are considered mutually exclusive with type of shooting (single vs. bracketed shoots). Just does not make sense and reduces value of the hardware.
Does anyone know if this firmware design problem exists in K-r or K-5?

Thanks for starting this thread, it helped to re-use the remote that had come with my old Sony DCR-TRV730 Handycam.
I had tried to use that remote with K-x earlier, by pressing the "Photo" button on it and it did not work, and I had not think about trying other buttons. Indeed, pressing the "Display" button on that remote (RMT-814) makes K-x shoot!
Very nice.. FYI, for those Sony Handycam and K-x owners out there..

I hope some of software improvements in K-r will come as a new firmware update to K-x.

You can use the Av button next to the Green button on K-x to initiate stop down metering. I use this method (I am new to using M lens as well) and I dont see the mirror action with the Av button. I will give a shot to the Green button to confirm your observation.

Yes that is what I meant; self-timer before the first shot, not between the shots.
As it is now, the value and flexibility of the HDR capture feature is greatly reduced IMO.
Is there a way to channel this feedback to Pentax people such that they can fix it in the next firmware release, or we just hope they monitor this forum and do the needful? :)

ertan.

Hi there,
I realized that when HDR capture mode is enabled on K-x, Self-Timer is not available as a drive mode option. I found this strange and wonder why.
I can still go back to exposure bracketing and use self timer and combine images with a third party software but why cant I use the built-in HDR capture feature with self-timer? Sounds like a firmware bug to me.
Thx,
ertan.

Hi all,
I am a new member from Seattle, got my new K-x Red about 10 days ago and playing around with it. Upgraded from Canon Powershot S2 IS.
So far I am happy with the K-x, but have some questions to follow up on the relevant sections of the forum. I like nature and HDR photography.
Thx,
ertan.
