I just received the same hood; I bought it after finding this thread. I couldn't be happier with it...awesome value for $12! So glad I didn't by the over-priced Pentax version. Thanks for all the info!

I'm using a K-x and I don't shoot JPEG much but when I do I use Auto WB. The K-x does a really good job with it.

I'm with Marc, I have lots of stuff that I use rechargeable AA's in, as well as the K-x and two Powershot point-and-shoots. I always have a couple of sets charged and ready to use.

I just bought the Sigma 18-200 superzoom (the older one that Marc mentioned, not the newer one with OS) for my K-x from B&H for $249 with free shipping. It certainly has it's limitations but for me it's a good walk-around lens. I know that's a little more than you wanted to spend, but I think it's a good value for the money if you decide to go that route.

Being new to DSLR's myself, I did a lot of homework before I decided on the K-x. I am really happy with it and am learning a lot. I found out later (after I bought it) that it is listed by Consumer Reports as a Best Buy. Made me feel good to see that. :)

I always use a card reader. I don't want the camera batteries to die while I'm transferring 300 raw files...:(

This may seem a silly thing to some, but I like the placement of the on/off switch. It couldn't be more convenient, right under your right index fingertip. Makes for instant-on even while holding the camera with only one hand. Better for me, at least, than the other brands I tried out.

I bought mine a few months ago from Amazon for less than $45 including shipping. I have been impressed with it. The ball head holds my K-x and 55-300 kit lens no problem. I just bought an adapter bushing from B&H to allow me to use the ball head on my monopod just to add a little stability when I don't want to carry the tri-pod around. BTW it came with a really nice carrying bag. I recommend it, it's a great bang-for-the-buck.

I wish the 2 second timer could be used with the Shake Reduction ON, not off. I do this a lot with my point-and-shoot cameras. If I'm not using a tripod it really helps to eliminate movement as I press the shutter button. At least make it a menu option.

Thanks, pingflood. If/when I get to try another shot like that I will bump up the shutter speed and try turning the shake reduction off. I'm not sure if it helps or hurts when shooting panning shots hand-held. I took a lot of shots that day and most of them were way too soft. This particular photo was much sharper before it was resized and compressed for web.

I almost bought a Canon Rebel XSI but decided on the K-x because of...(in no particular order)...
price
in-body Shake Reduction
AA batteries
low-light performance
4+ frames per second
SD memory cards
live view
position of the on/off switch (This may seem unimportant to some but I like the ability to turn the camera on or off quickly with one hand.)

New K-x owner here. I installed the new firmware no problem. It only took about two minutes but it seemed much longer since I think I had stopped breathing while staring at the screen waiting for the "Complete" message :D. Thanks to all who contributed to this thread, it has been a big help.

Hi everyone, I just got my K-x a few days ago and I am very impressed. This is my first DSLR; I have been using Canon super-zoom point-and-shoot's for several years. Nothing against my SX-10, it's a great little camera but the difference in low-light performance of the K-x is astounding. I'm looking forward to hanging out here and learning from you all.
