Lightroom Metadata missing for new lens

Is this correct? It seems to make sense but I don't know how Lightroom lens profiles work. Does Lightroom have different lens profiles (or do they behave differently) for Nikon lenses on Nikon APS-C and FF cameras?

Adobe releases a new version of LR every couple of months that includes new camera and lens profiles. The version with the K-1 just came out last month. I suspect we'll see a release in another month or two that includes the newest Pentax lenses. It's too bad they don't release lens profiles separately from the software updates.

K-1 tethering

That's what I figured which is why I started by asking about USB tethering. I don't mind waiting a bit (10 seconds? just guessing) to see the image as it would still be much faster and more convenient than the card shuffling I have to do now. I would also be ok with just transferring jpgs during the shooting phase if raw transfer is too slow, and uploading the raw files later when I'm ready to edit. I'm hoping Adam can provide a full review of all the capabilities and how fast and reliable it is once it's available. I don't even own a K-1 yet but will likely get one around September if the tethering looks like it will work for me.

I do a lot of self portraiture so part of what I want is to be able to see live view from my position in the scene, and then chimp the image without having to leave where I'm sitting/standing. Which brings up another feature. Sometimes I want to be able to trigger the shutter on a time delay from a remote - standard remote triggering rather than through the app. Sometimes I may be able to easily reach off screen to hit a key on a laptop, but depending on the composition that may not be feasible so the IR remote would work better. Seems like when I was playing with the Flu card a year or so ago I couldn't do timed shutter release.

K-1 tethering

I presume the Image Sync app for wifi control is available for iOS and Android phones/tablets but not for Windows laptops? I don't own an iPad. I have a 7" Android tablet that might work ok but would much rather see the images on a 13" laptop or even a 24" display connected to the laptop, which is why I think the wired tethering is what I want. With my eyesight bigger is better. Today when I'm shooting in the studio with my K-3 I make a bunch of shots, use the K-3 LCD to see if I got focus right (I can't always tell on the K-3 LCD even when zoomed to 100%) then transfer the SD card to the computer to view the images. On the large computer screen I can easily check focus and can also see issues with composition (such as things not precisely lined up, errant shadows, etc.) that are easy to overlook on a small screen. I'm hoping either the wired or wireless tethering will let me see the raw or jpg image on the computer screen quickly after making the shot just like my Canon and Nikon buddies have been able to do for years.

I'm hoping it will be possible to use a laptop in the studio to focus using a large screen, control basic exposure settings, fire the shutter, and review the final image in Lightroom without having to shuffle SD cards. I watched a photographer do all this with an older Canon last year and have been waiting impatiently for Pentax to catch up.

Pentax returning to brick & mortar stores?

After buying my first DSLR, a K10D with kit lens, I was in need of a faster lens for low light shooting. I went to the local camera store who still carried Pentax at the time and asked if they had any f/2.8 or faster lenses. The response was "Pentax doesn't make fast lenses". So I went home and ordered an FA 77 f/1.8 from B&H.

This store hasn't carried Pentax gear in years. I buy camera bags and other small accessories from them occasionally when I want to see before I buy.

Today I checked their website. The only Pentax gear listed is the 645z, body only, for special order and $1500 more than B&H. No lenses. I wouldn't mind paying a small premium to buy from a local store. But I'm not optimistic I'll ever buy anything major from this store again.

RRS L-plate for K-1

Awesome! I won't be ordering a K-1 right away, maybe in a few months. But when I do I'll be ordering the RRS L-plate at the same time. I have one "permanently" attached to my K-3. It fits like a glove.

I came here to report the same problem. On a recent trip I made 58 short video clips with my K-3. 8 of them came out looking like recordings of focus-peaked video. Most of my clips are less than 30 seconds each. The effect seems to occur at random. I generally shoot in Aperture Priority mode, sometimes manual, but these videos are probably all in Aperture Priority. The only settings I recall changing between videos is focus (I use back button focus) and aperture depending on whether I want narrow or wide depth of field. I definitely am not going into any menus and changing video effects settings, and once recording the only thing I do is either pan the camera or leave it still on a tripod.

During one 12 minute period where I recorded 9 videos each less than 25 seconds and shot 7 stills, all the stills are at f/5.6. So it looks like I probably wasn't doing anything other than aiming the tripod, composing, focusing, and hitting the shutter button.

Reading this and the other thread on the topic, it appears likely to be a bug in the K-3 rather than any intentional or unintentional settings change. Has anybody reported this formally to Ricoh (and how would I go about doing that?). I don't really care about getting pro-quality (whatever that is) video with my K-3, but I do want to get consistent results, and the normal videos look good. These focus-peaked recordings are garbage and unusable.

Holy trinity of lenses

The three lenses I almost always carry with me are the DA 15mm f/4 Limited, DA 35mm f/2.8 Macro Limited, and FA 77mm f/1.8 Limited. This covers most situations I encounter on walkabouts, and the set is small and lightweight. I would certainly like a faster wide lens than the DA 15mm, but it's small enough to fit in my pocket and the image quality is superb, so I'm happy that it controls my mind.

You didn't say but when on a tripod presumably you're using the 2-second timer, or remote with timer or mirror lockup. I do most of my flower shots on a tripod with 2-second timer, using live view to zoom in to 8x for manual focus. As long as the sun isn't washing out the LCD I'm able to get exceptionally sharp photos this way. If you do it this way and can't get sharp images, then something is wrong.

If you're shooting wide open, you might try stopping down to at least f/5.6 or even f/8.

LCD screen frozen at menu screen - had to remove battery

I just had an "interesting" K-3 lockup today. Camera was on a tripod set for 2-second timer. It had been powered up for about a minute. I used live view to manually focus. Hit the red button to turn off LV, then pressed the shutter button to start the 2-second timer. After 4 beeps (less than one second) the camera froze. No more beeps, shutter did not fire. After 5 or 10 seconds the camera powered itself down (top LCD went off). My first thought was that the battery died. I powered it back on and successfully made the shot. Battery is a Pentax Ricoh D-LI90 recently charged (LCD shows 3 bars - full). Firmware 1.03. No grip.

I've had maybe 3 other lockups since getting the K-3 in November. In all cases the camera had been recently powered up (a minute or two) and the camera became non-responsive for at least 10 or 15 seconds: shutter wouldn't fire, menu or other buttons have no effect. Power button had no effect initially, but after 10 or 20 seconds the power button did turn the camera off, then it was fine. I've never had to remove the battery.

Flucard impressions so far

A major flaw with the current firmware is that you must connect to the card wirelessly in order to set the wifi channel. If you're in an area where you can't get a good connection due to interference on the current channel, you're totally hosed. There absolutely needs to be a way to change the channel from the camera menus. I have had terrible experience keeping the card connected to my phone or tablet, even in an area where there are few wifi networks and I set the channel to one that does not appear to have any conflicts. When it works, it does everything nearly everything I want it to do and I have gotten a few shots that would have been nearly impossible without it. But it works so infrequently that it's merely a disappointing toy that I can only play with when *it* wants to play. I'm hoping it gets more stable with a firmware update.

I have used the O-FC1 for remote control with a Nexus 7 (2013 model) and Samsung Galaxy S3, both using Chrome. I have not used any file transfer apps. I'm content with copying the raw files to my computer the old fashioned way since my computer is a desktop without wifi.
