14mm review confusion

When reading the 14mm comparison that was just posted it seemed obvious that the Rokinon came out way better with regard to CA than the Pentax. It even states in the article:

However, when it came to the review ratings the Pentax scored a 9 on CA and it says

The Rokinon scored a 6 on CA.

Is this a mistake in the review or am I missing something? It seems the results and tests were mixed up at some point.

Combine PEFs to 32 bit Tiff for LR 4.1

I saw the Enfuse plug-in last night and it does look pretty interesting. My only question is if it actually can save out the 32 bit floating point Tiff like LR 4.1 uses. From what I've read about Enfuse it looks like the program decides what pixels to include in the final image for you. It doesn't actually blend all the RAW files into one larger files with all of the exposure information intact.

Anvh - I don't think I had any compression turned on, but I can re-check tonight and see. I was using the Batch HDR that is supposed to just take the RAW files and align/combine them into an HDR Tiff file in Luminance.

Looks like Picturenaut also has the capability to output 32 bit tiffs. The caveat is that you have to save Tiffs out of LR, then bring them into Picturenaut, combine them, and it will output the combined 32 bit Tiff. Hopefully, I'll be able to bring that back into LR 4.1 and adjust it further using the LR tools. I'll try it sometime this weekend and let you guys know how it turns out!

Combine PEFs to 32 bit Tiff for LR 4.1

I just upgraded my copy of Lightroom to 4.1 and noticed the new feature of being able to use the controls to process HDR files. I haven't ever played around with HDR, but I like my images to look realistic so it seems that LR would be a good way to process the extra detail and range without making it look unnatural. However, I don't have Photoshop or another program that can combine the PEFs (or DNGs if necessary) into the 32 bit floating point Tiff file. I tried Luminous HDR last night and it was able to save the 32 bit Tiff, but LR 4.1 said that the file was unrecognized or damaged so I think there may be a format mismatch.

Are there any free programs out there that will just combine the raw files into the Tiff without doing any tonemapping or processing (except maybe align)? All of the other programs or plug-ins I've found either limit the size output of the tiff or put a watermark on the image.

I'm still loving my Auto Sears 50/1.7 MC. It's getting a little harder to get proper focus now that my son is 15 months old and running around all over the place. The great thing about this lens is that even when it's not tack sharp the bokeh is so smooth you can do some creative processing and call it "soft focus" like in the second shot. However, when you nail the focus like in this first shot it really shines. Catch-in-focus helps a lot too.

I'm confused. Are you talking about the large black spots that look like dust on the lens/sensor or are you talking about the pink and white single pixel spots that look like bad pixels on the sensor? For all you guys screaming DUST you should look at the original size image. There's a pink spot in the top left, one in the bottom left, a white pixel spot on the left edge in the clouds above the horizon, and a black pixel spot just above and to the right of the sun.

Thanks! We drove up. I have a wife who doesn't like nature very much and a 15 month old that is just now starting to walk. I only had 5 minutes or so on the top of the mountain to shoot because the bugs were pretty bad, but I'll take what I can get these days.

A couple of shots from Grandfather Mountain in NC. Shot with my Kx and the kit 18-55. Touched up in LR4. Really kind of disappointed in the lack of sharpness, but overall pretty happy with the shots. I'm trying to convince myself to spend the money on a better wide angle zoom or prime, but haven't pulled the trigger yet.

Some shots I took almost a year ago with the Sears 50mm 1.7 my brother-in-law gave me. It used to be my wife's father's lens before he passed away so I took some pics of his grandson. It's a very good lens and competes for portraits with my new Pentax DA 35mm 2.4. The 35 is sharper, but the Sears has incredibly creamy bokeh and is still pretty sharp even wide open. If you can get your hands on this lens I would highly recommend it unless you really hate manual focus/aperture.

All shots are at 1.7

worth the extra cost?

Wow, I am truly impressed and thankful for all of the responses! I think I'm going to go with the majority of the responses and get the da35. Like was mentioned I'll still have the 50/1.7 if I need it. I do find 50mm a bit restrictive indoors on my kx. I had to crawl under the bed last weekend to get one particular shot of his room that I wanted. I think the 35mm will give me enough room to work while still keeping a decent distance.

The da35 has gotten good enough reviews so that I don't think I'll regret not having the absolute sharpest lens out there. I'm not a professional by any means so a few hundred lines of resolution lost isn't going to bother me as long as I can see my son and family captured in the moments. I really just need something with better glass and faster than my 18-55 kit lens that has auto focus and exposure (it takes forever to take a shot with my 50).

I also think I'm going to do like some suggested and use some of the money I'll save to get a flash. I'm using the diy film canister diffuser right now and it does give much better results that the on-camera flash alone, but having an external flash I can bounce should make a world of difference with portraits.

I appreciate the other lens options suggested, but there's no way I can spend $500-1000+ on a lens right now. Babies are expensive!!!

Once again, thank you all so much for the quick and helpful replies.

Edit: Worm - I didn't mention, but I also have an 80-200 sears lens with macro as well. I'm looking forward to taking lots of close ups of little toes. :)

I'm looking for a good all around lens that will mainly be used for portraits. I currently have a 50mm 1.7 Sears full manual lens that I'm using (I got it for free) and am decently happy with the results. The image quality isn't the best and being fully manual is somewhat cumbersome. I'm using a k-x and still have the kit 18-55mm lens for general usage, but it doesn't really cut it either.

My wife is due to have our first child in 4 weeks so I'm looking to add a new full auto lens to take pictures of him and family. My choices are between the new DA35 2.4 and the FA50 1.4. I can afford either, but with the baby on the way I'd like to spend as little as possible. I would be buying both lenses new so there's around $140 difference in price. I've read many good things about both lenses so I'm somewhat torn as to whether the extra money would really be worth it to get the 1.4 as I already have a 1.7 if I need to take really low light/shallow dof shots.

I'm not really sure what my exact question is since there's a lot going through my head about this. I'm really just looking for opinions from you guys to see if there's anything I haven't really considered.

lens compatibility with K-X

Just bought a Pentax K-X and was discussing it with my dad. Both he and my grandfather have old Minolta cameras with several lenses that I'm wondering if they will work with my K-X and if they will require adapters. Is there a chart somewhere that will show all lenses that are compatible with pentax cameras and if they require adapters? I searched and couldn't find one. Maybe I didn't search hard enough. Also, any opinions on the quality of these lenses would be much appreciated.

k-x kit lens vs old k1000 kit lens

I just ordered a new K-X white with the kit lens. I'm very excited to get it and start taking pictures, but in the meantime I wanted to see how my old Pentax K1000 lens would work on it. I got the K1000 back around 1997 (the last year they made it) and it came with a SMC Pentax-A 35-80mm lens. On the lens it says 1: 4-5.6 which I would assume is the aperture range like on the K-X kit lens (which is f3.5-5.6). On the aperture ring it has 22 16 11 8 5.6 4.

Pardon my noobness with lenses, but what exactly is the 4-5.6 on my lens if the aperture settings go up to 22? Would my old lens have a better or worse aperture range than the K-X kit lens? Which lens do you guys think will take better shots (or should I just try them both and see)?

Thanks for your help! I've been loving the forum in my search for a DSLR and am now proud to be a new Pentax DSLR owner! :)
