New to DSLR !!! Pentax K-m.

It is simply underexposed. You can use the bright setting for the digital filter thing or just over expose it. The +/- button only allow to adjust in any mode other then M obviously. But it is indeed a +/- button that does it as i own a km.

I don't own the lens but I do have a dejur teleconverter 2x and I will have to say it is horrible. I would not use it at all. So if the lens in anything like the teleconverter then I'd pass on it unless you don't want $60.

If you search up the history you can find an in depth review done by one of the members of the forum that compares all the 35mm and his findings were just as expected. I have the DA35 2.4 and it does a fine job. The LTD macro is in a league of its own.

M42 Adapter question or non-permanent solution for Fujinon 55mm f1.8

I know the Genuine m42 adapter has worked really well with all my M42 lenses but I can not respond to 3rd party ones. As for mounting, I know Fujinon lenses that are ebc have a protrusion on it and it does cause issues with mounting with the genuine adapter unless you sand off the tab. As for SMC Takumars I never had any problems with the regular adapter. I would just be careful when mounting and if you see an issue then use caution.

Any m42 should work fine. The only ones that you need to worry about is the ones that are unique in terms of brands trying to implement their own metering technique.

M42 Adapter question or non-permanent solution for Fujinon 55mm f1.8

The version of the Fujinon lens does not have a protrusion. I believe only the EBC version will have them. It seems like the lens you have is the same as the one I have. As for the aperture pin, my solution for the problem is to open the lens up and place a holder to force the pin down. The lens can easily be opened up from the bottom.

If you look at this post it should give you all the information you need for the modification.

$20 Extended warranty question

The Canadian warranty is standard 2 years if you look at the box it came in there should be a gold sticker with black letters that states 2 years standard warranty this has been the case since I can remember. I know my Km had the 2 years which I luckily never had to take advantage of. If you buy an extended one it will probably be a 3rd party one. Ie henrys extended warranty. Which I dont suggest buying when I had my dad pick up my k30 they lied and tried to get him to buy the extended one. (He doesnt speak good English) they told him the warranty was only 1 year even though it says 2 years on the box. And yes the camera was brand new not a refurbished one.

Affordable Macro Lens

If you want cheap with what you have raynox would work well with the dal 55-300 but remember working distance is shortened and in the case of insects it may not be as good.

If you dont mind manual then a pentax m or pentax a 100 macro would fit the bill. That will get you some distance away from the subject and good magnification.

As for auto focus and everything the tamron 90mm or sigma 105mm or pentax 100mm wr would work well these will cost you more then the other options

Lastly there is extension tubes. I find that they usually give you more working distance.

If you are really going to spend time doing macro but cant afford spending lots id go with the pentax m or pentax a macro lens itd run just under 200 depending on a or m. Raynox can give good results but you have to be very patient and careful

Pentax reps at Henrys stores across Canada

I agree that henrys has been very absent in promoting pentax as a brand. I know for my local store they only have a demo model on hand and they have to order it if you want one. As for lenses i had to wait for my 35 2.4 they normally do not carry any. They only have a da 18-135 and the 55-300 on hand everything else is ordered. As for dispaying the, they are in the corner of the store and unless you ask for it they actively try to sell the nikons and canons.

But with that said im glad to see that pentax reps will be visiting some stores even though it is not one of mine.

Are oily aperture blades something that should be addressed?

In my opinion oily blades should be addressed as early as possible. I've seen some uncared for lenses that have the aperture blades stuck completely together. For myself I found that cleaning them are far easier to do when they are somewhat moveable then completely frozen. Also this occurs when the grease from the barrel mechanism separates and the oil could eventually get on the glass portions which could cause unwanted degradation of image quality.

If your willing to spend the money might as well get it serviced as soon as possible and have a refreshed lens to play with then continuing to use a lens and play roulette with time.

Weatherized Lens?

For winter, I haven't really worried about weather sealing in terms of snow falling on the camera as the temperature was usually cold enough that it wouldn't melt. However, if you can afford it I would go for the WR if you plan on taking the lens out in the rain.

I own a M1.4 and it's my favorite lens I can't really see a problem with either of them. I think now a days we are way too invested in sharpness, etc. Both of these lenses will give you awesome results and you can't go wrong either way. I say get which ever is available and in your budget.

HOW TO STORE LENS PROPERLY? (prevent fungus, oily blades, etc.)

My storage technique is bag them in silica gel packs to help prevent moisture. Every month or so I take all of them out and inspect them visually for any dust inside and give it a whirl out in the sun. The only way to prevent fungus or oily blades in to not store them and to use them often. It's the best remedy.

I would carry on everything that is essential. Things like tripods and flash units I would have that in checked baggage. However all lenses and bodies stay with me. I won't have it any other way. I'm not a professional so I usually only need specific lenses and I won't carry my entire collection of lenses. However the ones I do bring must stay with me. I'm sure professionals have an extra insurance on their equipment as it is their livelyhood.

I have yet to find a TC that could match up against a well made lens of the same focal length and aperture. I say scrap the TC and go hunt for the M100mm. TC tend to destroy the image quality a lot and even with the best of them it is only marginally better.

Lens Fit

If the FT lens is a screw mount (M42) then yes it will work. I know that they did have a period of m42 mounts and later bayonet type mount. The bayonet versions will not work unless you modify it. As for the M42 versions you will need an M42 adapter for it to work. It is not compatible straight out of the box.

Extension tubes are pretty much standard sizes 12 24 36? Something like that. All brands are equal as they are just a hollowed out tube. If you can get the electrical contacts that would be nice for auto aperture. Only thing to look for s tat the tubes inside are nit refkective as this will cause issues with light

As for the raynox adapter there are two choices the 150 and 250. The 250 gives more magnification while the 150 is less but with the 250 the working distance is less. For the 50-200 kit lens id go with the 250. If you are getting the 55-300 or anything beyond the 180mm focal range id strongly suggest the 150 as it will be very hard to control with the 250.

I'll second that the DA35 f2.4 is a fine lens but I shot with it today outdoors at a parade (Canada Day Parade!) and it was too short for that. So depending on your shooting habits it may or may not fit your bill.

My suggestion on a tight budget would be
DA 16-45 F4 paired with either the D-FA 100mm Macro or DA 55-300.
You should be able to pick up all these for <$550

However, tight budget on my terms and in your terms maybe completely different definitions.

The 100mm will cover your telephoto and macro lens. and if the 100mm will not get you enough reach you still have the 50-200mm for some extra reach. The 100mm will get you some more working distance for macro shots. The 55-300 gives you plenty of versatility but doesn't get you macro. Unless......

Raynox DCR-150 adapter?? People do get good results from them. I myself have tried it on my Sigma 70-300 and I can get some good shots. I have subsequently moved over to extension tubes and can get better results as I can fire my flash. My Sigma with Raynox always got in the way.

The kit lenses arent terrible but they arent in the same league as the ltd or much more expensive counterparts.

Id suggest you spend a little bit of time before you write them off; compared to nikon and canon kit lenses the pentax is regarded at the top. It is plenty sharp for most average work.

As for macro lenses the ltd da is very very sharp but expensive and has a shorter length. If you are planning insect shots id go for the 50 or 100mm.

Id dont get the comment of "To fulfil my ambitions as a photographer I need one day to day lens, one telephoto lens (to take shots of surf) and one macro lens Very tight"

I'd second the 18-135 DA. Nothing like having a fully weather sealed kit. It'd be my choice if I had a K5. Darn Km not being weather sealed. My other suggestion would be the DA40. I'm really considering removing the DA35mm 2.4 and getting the DA40 to replace it. Budget wise the XS version is going to run only 50$ more or so and you get a tiny lens albeit a little bit slower but good optics.

Question Mobile Skin

Hi,

I was wondering if there was any way to force the mobile skin on a browser without using the user CP? It seems that in order for the User CP you need to login and thus it will force the mobile skin when that option is activated.

What I want to do is force the mobile version without having to login first. It seems to detect mobile devices for my ipod touch and android phone which is fine but I really want to have that mobile skin for my tv internet browser.

Pretty much is there a link like m.wikipedia.org for this site or is that not even possible? The best I could manage was the low fi version but there is still lots of icons and extra that I don't want. I'd like the skinned down version where there is just the hyperlinks makes casual browsing much easier.

Thanks

So I saw the other post regarding the reversed element and mine doesn't seem to have that problem. Perhaps my lens is just very soft wide open and needs some more cleaning on the elements. If anyone could give a second opinion I have posted samples.
