thanks all so far for replies.........

It's already on its way back.

happens on 5 of the 6 memory cards with a variety of lens, but a bit random as to when it may or may not happen!

Also happens with the proper pentax battery and the 3rd party additional one........ bizarre!

K20d problem

Hi all,

Thought I'd put this up for discussion, as not come across anythign like it before, neither had anyone where I bought it, so it's off to Pentax UK......

Bought a K20D other day from Warehouse Express's Bargain Basement, and with varying lenses and varying memory cards have experienced the same intermittent, unpredictable problem....

Switch camera on, take first picture and the camera seems to crash / lock up / freeze.......... cannot access menu, cannot take another picture, switch it off, everything goes off apart from the no of exposures left on the card slot, and the only way to reset the camera is to remove the battery and then reinsert it. The camera could then be fine for a while or freeze up again.

1) If it gets past the first shot will be fine until switch off and then switch on again (may be fine then as well)

2) Shoot high res Jpg (****) and RAW (PEF file, not DNG) - so each time I am writing somewhere in the region of 21 Mb to a card.

3) Only have Sandisk or Lexar cards bought from reputable sources - either 4 or 8 Gb's.

4) Most recent firmware of 1.03 installed as per Pentax.jp's instructions.

Any ideas?

One of the guys there did say that had a slowish speed memory card - but surely that shouldn't casue the problem. Am I right in my understanding it will just take longer for each dataset to get from teh camera to the card.......

Unfortunately, as now an obsolete model, only real option was for it to go back to Pentax for them to take a llok.

ANyone else heard of a similar problem?

Thanks for the comments,

trouble with dusk is that here at the momnet about 3.30pm local time, (generaly grey ) and those pics were taken staight into the sun........ at dawn in the summer, sun would be up, far to the left at about 4am..............

also, none of the pics above have a sunset......... all were sunrise

however, I love the idea of having to buya 10-20mm and getting really close up!!!.... watch this space! :D

Poll: K-x vs. K-7? - Which one... $500 or $1000? Same Features?

guess it depends on how serious you want to be.........

both will take the same lenses, and in my experience it's 70% ground camera interface that makes a good photo, and no, i don't mean a tripod or monopod.

Over here the K-x which is a k-m with slightly bigger sensor is £500 with kit lens (yes, thats £ not $) and a K-7 with kit lens is about £950 (again, £ not $)

advantages of K7 - you can grip it for extra battery life............. and its weather sealed (or as we say, waterproof - to an extent - don't take it swimming!!!)

advantage of a K-x - smaller body (is that an advantage?) (though no grip available yet), runs on AA batteries, so if you cock up and forget to recharge the rechargeable batteries the nearest corner shop / garage / can help you out for a couple of £........... the K7 is integrated battery only.......

also for all you pixelpeepers, I believe the K7 is 14.2 MP and the K-x is 12.4MP, however my K-m is 10.2 and I print off at A3 size quite happily and have done an A2 which is also pretty good.........

whilst the subject area "still ife" doesn't do much for me, I do like the composition, colour and lighting of this shot. Would be interested to know how you lit the shot - I am guessing off camera and above right in relation to the camera......

Could see this photo working well on the wall of a rural(ish) seafood restaurant.........

Here's a few......... C&C welcome, be as kind or as harsh as you like (it's the best way for me to improve)

Daylight Come

Dawn over the "Royal" Beachhuts

Lighthouse - The colours in this photo are exactly as came out of the camera

A glorious sunrise with the sun reflecting and refracting off the cloudband above (about 30 mins between sun popping up and disappearing into the clouds...... running around the town like backside on fire!!)

Pier at dawn.

50 second exposure using a 10 stop ND filter...........

The Royal Beachhuts again - this time a week later and snow on the ground.......

Some other beachhuts
