Pentax K-r vs. Canon 5D Mark II

They look very similar of course at low ISO, but I've found the 5D mark II to really shine in low light, as far as color accuracy and tonality is concerned. Other cameras I've used (K-x, K20D, D300 etc) fall short. I haven't used the K-r though.

Shooting In The Snow - Any Tips, Advice?

Make sure to check your exposure so that the snow doesn't look grey, but nice and white. The automatic exposure modes may be fooled, so try manual mode and spot meter the snow for around +2 EV. Have fun!

K-7 vs 300D

I'd say to stay where you are. Unless you're going to be doing a lot of sports (and your lenses don't say that), the D300 doesn't offer that many advantages over the K-7. The Nikon 24/2.8 and 50/1.4 are also both just average lenses. I have no doubt that the FA24 and DA55 are as good or better.

I'd also recommend Fred Miranda... it's more of a Canon forum, but the people there are very knowledgeable. Nice buy and sell board too.

I think the thing I miss most about my K20D after switching to a D300 is the ability to use one hand to switch ISO. Also, the size and weight of the D300 + grip is just excessive... but otherwise, I've been pretty happy. I just got my Tokina 12-24 today for about half the price of the comparable Pentax 12-24. Gotta love the availability of third party glass.

Why do Nikonians brag about lens availability?

As far as I know, higher end Nikon bodies can meter very well with their older lenses. Just enter in the max aperture and focal length and you have more convenient metering than with pentax M lenses that require stop down metering. So in that sense, all old AI and AIS lenses are good to go, assuming you have at least a D200 or something.

That being said, I'm not sure I've ever really heard Nikon users brag that much about old lenses... more like old pentax glass gets tons of praise. Probably just because I've been on this forum so much

Lens for Gymnastics, Dance Recitals, and Soccer (kids) for K100

Gymnastics is probably one of the toughest sports to shoot, so it's no wonder that the 55-200 couldn't handle the job.

If you're not looking to get an f/2.8 tele zoom (i'm assuming that's what you mean by "insane") then perhaps the best and cheapest thing to do is pick up an old 50mm f/1.4 or 85mm 1.4 manual focus lens and get closer to the action. Try to get out on the floor- as long as you don't get in the judges way, it's usually not hard to get access. Prefocus on where you know the action is going to be and fire away!

K-3 speculation

Haven't read the entire thread but the discussion on articulating screens caught my eye. I used to be fairly down on the idea, mostly just because I thought they looked lame, but after shooting more and more photojournalistic work, I'd have to say that the ability to shoot up high and actually be able to frame a shot well rather than going for a true "hail mary" would be pretty nice. Same for shooting down low to get that dramatic angle. Right now I switch to live view and while it gives me some idea, it's far from ideal.

Will it be incorporated into pro level bodies? I'd say unless they can make them almost unbreakable, no. They just seem too flimsy to hold up to rigorous use. It'd be darn useful while it lasts though :p

Nope, 40 is 40. So with the 1.5x crop, it's more like a 60mm fov on a Pentax dslr.

Compare the exposure at f/4 to another lens. Is it the same? If it really is stuck and doesn't fully open, then you won't have an f/4 lens but an f/8 or f/11...

This sort of thing is pretty common, even in high end lenses. I believe Nikon's $2400 70-200 VRII is only 135mm at MFD at 200mm.

Architecture AKL indoor vs outdoor

Pretty much everything's been covered, but I'd say that with a space that huge there's no way to reasonably expect to be able to overpower the sun with strobes. It's just not going to happen unless you've got them set all over the place and suspended from the ceilings.

There's no getting around the fact that the inside and outside are many stops of light different. So what I'd do is take two exposures, one of the inside correctly exposed like you have here (although corrected for white balance, which you haven't really done), and one of the windows correctly exposed which would of course leave the inside totally dark. Then in post, use layer masks to selectively show and blend the two together.

Did a little reading on it, sounds pretty impressive. Lack of external microphone jack is a deal breaker though. Why take that feature away from a previous model?

Tamron Vs Sigma (Kit replacement) f 2.8 comparison

I had the Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 macro for a little while and I really liked it. Sharpness was great wide open and AF was decently quick, if a bit noisy. The close focusing abilities made it a good all around lens. Here's some stuff I've shot with it.

Nikon D7000 + 70-300 VR vs. Pentax K5 + Sigma 100-300

I just went to Nikon from the K20D. Needless to say, the D300's AF smokes the K20D but the IQ is almost identical, IMO. High iso may be a touch better in the Nikon, but like I said the real difference lies in the autofocus and fps.

I've been using an old AF 300mm f/2.8 lately for sports and it works wonders. Even though if it needs to go through the entire range it's painfully slow, when switching between targets and tracking it hasn't let me down. It's pretty damn cheap too compared to a similar lens from the pentax FA* line.

If money isn't an object, consider a 300 f/2.8 + an excellent AF-S 80-200 f/2.8 combo.

For me, typical indoor lighting for sports ends up around 1/500-1/640 sec at f/2.8, ISO 1600. This is usually good for a well lit basketball arena, but for hockey or indoor track and field, you'll have to bump up the exposure in post even more.

Since you're using a lens that's 200mm f/5.6 and you really can't go below 1/500 without blur, you're a bit out of luck with the K-7 and your current set up. You'd have to shoot at ISO 6400.

Definitely think about picking up a 70-200 f/2.8, or upgrade to the K-5 for faster FPS and usable ISO 6400.

If you shoot raw, you'll fill up the buffer faster, but presumably you'd be able to apply noise reduction to your liking for better results. I shoot sports in jpeg, only because processing a bunch of raws is time consuming and unnecessary for my needs.

Also, use manual mode since the exposure won't be changing much at all.
