Yep, it appears as though you have a huge issue with element misalignment.

That's a shame, are you using center point focus or auto point selection?
If it's auto point selection that would explain the intermitted focusing, as it could be selecting the portion of the frame that's effected by decentering to focus on.
If not, could the appearance of a shot having "off focus" just be the decentering and not a focusing problem at all?

It looks like one of the elements has become decentered, I dropped my first 12-24mm and this is what happened to it, so I ended up buying another.
This can be repaired. Good luck mate.
P.S nice shot :) Which beach is this?

+1 definitely get the 120 back. The FA 75mm f/2.8 is also a great choice.
I'd also add a manual focus A 150mm f/3.5, probably my favourite lens for the 645 right now, and can be found for great prices.

I have the 645Nii and love it. The differences between the 645N and Nii are not huge.
I bought the Nii mainly because of the "film flatness" issue that is apparently solved by the 645Nii's custom function giving you the ability to shoot 15 shots per roll vs the standard 16.
This is caused when you leave the camera for a long time between shots, the film makes a sharp turn around a corner and can become unflat.
If you use the roll fairly quickly (eg portraits at events/weddings), this isn't meant to be a problem.
Other than that mirror lockup and a more modernised camera body texture more akin to Pentax's current cameras can be found on the 645Nii.
Both have amazingly large and clear viewfinders, much better than any DSLR of today, and are great to use and hold! :)

I'm with the others, the DA 16-45mm is one of Pentax's best value lenses, a lot of performance for the money.

This is at a location known as Cathedral Rocks, on the south coast of NSW, Australia, near Kiama.
It's such a surreal place, I love it :)
I had to time my entrance to this shallow cave with the swell going in and out, and be on the lookout for any big waves that could be entering and flooding the cave! |

^mattb123, I really like the shadows you've captured across the scene on the snow, very nice.
@Rense, I love the foggy scene with the silhouette, stunning.
Thanks mattb123, wllm, jax_zee and Tamia for your comments on my previous photo :)

It's the worst feeling!
The first thing I did was look at the lens, it seemed fine until I turned it over and saw the dents, then tried to focus and take a picture - worked fine, my heart sunk when the zoom jammed.
It was only then did I notice the blood on my knees and elbows :p
Thanks a lot for the info on Camera Clinic, I was assuming I'd have to send it back to Pentax Australia, and that price isn't as bad as I thought, obviously dependant on the damage but it's good to get a rough idea, thanks!
Merry Christmas!

Thanks for the replies, looks like I'll be sending it in.
I'm guessing the repair price will be quite steep where it's probably only a bent piece of something...that said I can imagine myself opening the lens and all the elements falling out.
Been having a pretty bad day with this and other things, but this afternoon I found a (seemingly rare) Pentax smc 150mm f/4.0 in an opp shop for $30 :)
What were the chances!

Hi All,
I was shooting a waterfall and slipped and took a nasty fall down some rocks.
My Pentax 12-24mm has hit the rocks and dented a bit at the front, now it doesn't zoom smoothly, it gets very hard to turn mid range :(
The glass looks ok at this stage and the focusing ring is still smooth.
How much would this kind of thing cost to repair?
Am I crazy to disassemble the lens myself and try bend something back? does anyone have any experience doing such thing?
Would I be damaging anything if I continued to use the lens and zoom it through this tight zone?
I'm pretty disappointed, it's my favourite and most used lens :(
Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Taken with a Tammy 28-75mm f/2.8 and cropped a little. Even when cropping it's much sharper than when using my Sigma 70-300mm. I was looking at the DA* 200mm, but I'm swaying towards the Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 after seeing samples here :) |
