Got one to use on my holiday in France. In a word its superb.
The funny system to turn it on takes some getting used to, but soon becomes second nature. Build quality is extremely high, the metal body feels a bit like. A 60s voightlander. The controls are laid out in a similar way to an SLR so already already will be second nature.
The results are amazingly good, the bigger sensor making a big difference and the raw files are also very good with very little noise.
It looks amazing and several people have asked me what it is. That's never happened to a camera I have owned in the past.

I've been using PSP x6 for a couple of months now, and have to say now that I am used to it, its better than the previous versions. Though I tend to agree that the interface can get a bit busy at times.
On a 64 bit Windows 7 it has very zippy performance. There has has also been a lot of improvements to the tools available over version X4 that I was using before. I have have had no problems with using plugins designed for Photoshop. The only complaint I do have is that the Raw converter has not improved as much as I would have liked, so I will be sticking with Aftershot for that.

$1300 for the body. If that is correct its cheaper than the K5ii when it was released. That's aggressive pricing from the start. A good move from Ricoh.

I would look at getting some used extention tubes and use your 50 mm. Very easy to use and you will get great results. You can pickup a set on ebay for between £5 & £20, depending on quality.

I agree with most of your comments about what sort of camera and lenses that a enthusiast amateur may need. But I am uncertain of the future of the cropped sensor. If full frame sensors come down in price as they seem to be doing there may not be a market for the cropped sensor. In my experience most amateurs are very influenced by the equipment available to professionals.
At the moment I am thinking of replacing my K10, but I don't know if I should go for the excellent K5ii or wait for the rumoured up and coming Pentax full frame. Interesting times are ahead for the enthusiasts SLR.

Amateur Photographer in the UK used to have a chap who did technical measurements of lenses as part of their reviews. As I remember very few lenses actually had the focal length stated. I think manufactures put a focal length on the lens that is near to a logical number such as 55-300 mm as opposed to 53.9-306.2 mm, it just looks neater.

I have to agree with VisualDarkness. I have found that in some climates lens fungus is a constant problem with all optical equipment. I lived in East Africa for a few years and a dry box was essential in keeping cameras and lenses in good condition. Basically they control the amount of humidity getting to the lenses, making it difficult for fungus to grow. If you live in a warm wet climate fungus has the ideal environment to destroy your camera equipment.
I know this is not going to solve the problem with your lens, but one of these cabinets could well be worth the money for you, as they are considerably cheaper then having to replace expensive DA* lenses.

I have to totally agree with you about the Arctic Butterfly. I have found it to be the most effective way I know to keep dust under control on a camera sensor and have been using one for a number of years. In fact I do not go away from home without it being in my camera bag. I have also found Visible Dusts sensor swabs very useful for getting rid of those bits of dirt that seem to stick to the camera sensor. I have no problems in recommending Visible Dust products as they all seem to do exactly what the manufacturer claims.

I have been given a Sears KSX Super a couple of weeks ago haven't got a clue how it ended up in the UK as Sears are a US Retailer. It looks very like a 70s Ricoh SLR. It has a K Mount manual speeds up to 1000th of a second and aperture priority. It is a really nice camera to use and seems well made.
Does anyone know if this was made for Sears by Ricoh, or if not who may have made it for them.

I am always surprised at the quality of some of the 35mm film compact cameras. My father had a Ricoh compact all the way through the eighties (forgot which one). On being asked to scan some negatives from that time for my Mother a couple of months ago I was amazed at the sharpness and general quality of the scans from such a modest camera. The resultant prints where much better then the 6x4 from the processors.
Maybe we thought that they were not up to much at the time as the film was often sent to same day photo processors, were quality was sacrificed for speed, but on second inspection the negatives are well worth a second look.

At most price points I would suggest that Pentax has generally as good or better build quality as the other equipment manufacturers. In recent years it has improved a lot. But be aware that the 18-50 DAL will not be of the quality of a Limited series lens. As in all things you get what you pay for.
That said, I have used Pentax equipment for since my teens and have never had a failure of a lens or a camera.

I notice that ephotozine have put the K5II as their best mid range DSLR and the K30 as equal 4th. This seemed to have generated a lot of bile from the canon fraternity in the comments section.
Ephotozine has always been very positive in there reviews of Pentax products. They always look at what how the product preforms as against what they are expected to say by the canik crowd.

I remember these. They looked daft and gave rubbish results. More of a fun item then a serious bit of kit and fooled no one for a minute that you were taking a picture of them.

I used a K1000 for 10 years (and still working after 33 years), and you are right to say that in low light the ttl meter in the camera is just not as sensitive as modern cameras. In those days I always carried my trusty Western Euromaster hand held light meter for such situations. You also need quit fast film for situations like a dimly lit restaurant.
The really good thing about the K1000 is that it makes you think a little bit about every shot you take. I recommend that you spend a few days shooting different types and speeds of film and then you will see why this camera is so popular and loved by photographers all over the world.

I do not like getting rid of my old cameras so I have seven pentax film cameras starting with the K1000 and finishing with *ist. I just seem to get too attached to them to part exchange or sell them.
Oh. and they all still work.

The adaptall system was for manual focus only, but one with an A setting was made. You will be able to use a manual focus lens with an A setting on all Pentax Auto focus cameras in manual focus mode. To get AF you will need an AF lens or the very expensive pentax AF adapter.

I haven't got a solution for you.
But I did duplicated everything you did on my p30 and it works just as it is supposed to. It will even fire the shutter with the lens off and the back open.
You may have a mechanical fault.

Nice shot. I agree lets see some more.
That lens combination must weigh almost as much as the 4x4 you where shooting from. Hope the cab roof was not too damaged.
Not a lens for taking on a long hike!

In a way there is a logic to the Ricoh purchase of the Pentax photo arm from Hoya.
Hoya was a bit lost with Pentax and really did know what to do with it and was reluctant to invest money to make the brand more competitive.
Ricoh makes interesting compact cameras that are probably better than what Pentax has to offer. Also Ricoh has no presence at all in the more serious end of the market such as SLR system cameras.
We have to remember if Pentax is going to survive it must be run by people who are serious about camera manufacturing, know the business and is willing to invest in the future.

Would Ricoh get rid of the Pentax brand name? Probably be a mistake as I think it is a much stronger brand then Ricoh.
