the reality is simply that 24p and 30p/i do have a different look... but that doesn't mean that one is better than the other... it totally depends on your use for it...

if you're planning to do dramas or documentaries, its nice to shoot 24p since it has a nice kind of a "glossy" aesthetic... but if you're planning to do sports or news stories, you'd want to opt for the 30p/i format, since the higher frame rates capture motion a lot better... and since it sounds like you want to capture snowboarding shots, 30p/i is something to consider...

I was a television broadcasting student and although the focus was primarily on news production, we did have film/documentary projects to do. The bad thing was that we had to do these film/documentaries with the DSR-250 news cameras provided, and since they shoot 30i, it made our shows look ridiculous... but with that said, there would be people in the journalism class that would use the DVX-100a's that they were provided and accidentally shoot their news stories in 24p, which of course looked ridiculous... so really, its not that one format is superior to the other... its just that they both have a different look that fit better with certain styles...

I think I might have spoken a bit too soon on this... maybe just got caught up in the excitement...

Although it was a big improvement, as going from 6400 on your kit lens to 800 on a f1.4 would be, I still notice issues with this thing in terms of noise. After looking at the footage again and doing a few more tests, I really notice that this camera can't seem to shoot dark areas at all. I would shoot video with AE-L under conditions that would put the camera in ISO 200 and then if I shot in a dark area (with the AE-L active), it would still come up really noisy... and then I would shoot in ISO 1600 and it would look essentially the same... which is tell me, even though there is noise that can be created with the auto ISO'ing, it's not completely the issue. It's like there is some shadow compensation that activates. I checked my highlight and shadow compensation, thinking that might be the issue, but it was turned off... but you can't access anything like that in the video modes.

I dunno... kinda disappointing... I'll probably keep the new lens anyway though...

edit:

I was wondering... right now I'm using a Class 4 memory card. It runs at 15mbps... I was thinking that should suffice but I was wondering if that could potentially be an issue.

bought a pentax fa 1.4 today... problem solved... even with 1600 iso settings (assuming by checking the auto functions in still mode) the footage doesn't look grainy at all... must have been shooting 3200-6400 the whole time...

rokinon 85mm f1.4 vs pentax fa 50mm f1.4?

Hello,

I'm looking for a new lens that can shoot with a lot more light and I was looking at either the Rokinon 85mm f1.4 and the pentax fa 50mm f1.4. They are roughly the same price ($250-$300) so I was wondering which would be a better choice.

One thing to note is that one of the big reasons for wanting a wider lens is so I can shoot better indoor/night/lowlight videos with my new Pentax K-x. My hope is that a wider lens with reduce some of the noise/grain issues I've been having with lowlight video.

Thanks :)

if you look full screen you can see the background is really green and pixelated... and its not compression because thats what the full HD vid looks like... it's flashing...

so... I was thinking the graininess was caused by the auto ISO (in that it would increase the gain automatically) but then I did a low light test, albeit at f3.5, but I did the AE-L lock (all settings set as they should be, etc.) on a light to get to ISO 200 then turned off everything, then shot the candle at what should be ISO 200 and got some really nasty noise issues regardless...

the video is here...

here's a comparison video... they had a better lens but in this one there isn't any weird noise issues...

thanks again :)

Hello,

I was taking some video tests with my new K-x and notice there is quite a bit of noise in the footage. It's like a gain switch is on. My guess is that this has to do with the auto-ISO settings in the camera. I tried to limit the auto-ISO from 200-400 but still no luck. I looked on youtube and saw some K-x night footage that didn't look overly noisy and I was hoping to get similar results.

Anyway... just wondering what tricks there are to bring down the noise in indoor/night shots?

Thanks :)
