Interested to know about Carl Zeiss Jena 35-70 f3.5-4.5

I have to say that it looks very similar to my Contax Zeiss 35-70 macro which is absolutely exceptional. You may find some information in this older thread where your lens, as well as others in that range, are discussed (with other links) : https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-slr-lens-discussion/155221-would-c...seful-you.html

Or 500mm for portraits ? This is the lovely Old Lady that I've seen a few times when visiting her island home and this time she came out to bring me hot Chinese Tea when I was birding ... in case I felt cold (temperature has dropped with the arrival of the Northern winds, from 35C+ to a cool 25C) ;)

Heimaey Promontory, Westmann Islands

The landlady at the guesthouse (I thought it better to find a B&B than to camp out in this weather !) said that the highest point on the Westmann Islands (this is on the way up there) is the windiest place in Iceland, one of the windiest countries anywhere in the world anyway.
With a storm on the way it was blowing at 100kph (ca. 65mph) during this shot (tough to stabilise !) on Heimaey Island and later I was blown off my feet twice, before I reached safety in the lee of the lighthouse at the top ... and then I could have lit a match :D

That is the Vatnajökull Glacier just visible on the mainland. Iceland’s Vatnajökull glacier is Europe’s largest icecap. Vatnajökull (2,110 m) is the largest glacier in Iceland and it’s also the largest glacier mass in Europe.

I bought one for a just completed month long trip to Iceland via Abu Dhabi (Grand Mosque top of my list). Superb. Minimal distortion, great flare resistance, very sharp to the corners and VC and f2.8 of course.

Snowies like it cold. The shot below was taken at -45C during a recent trip to Inner Mongolia, the coldest it reached was -50C though we did have some 'mild' days as warm as -15/-20C too.

Lenses & TCs Test @ 300mm + x1.7 + x1.4 etc.

Recent debates on the virtues or otherwise of certain lense & TC combinations had me resolve to at least check what I have to hand - I need to know, when I go birding in particular, what is going to give me the best results (even though I don't shoot on a tripod very often). This was not designed to be a scientifically perfect test - only to give me real world results under real world conditions.

Methodology
K5 on a tripod + ball head, Manual Exposure (1/250, f8, ISO 200), timer : 2 second delay, SR off, AWB, AF-S, Spot Focus, Centre Weighted Metering. AF or MF (when AF unable to lock focus) : Shot taken on camera focus confirmation (beep).
2 shots per lense per combination - best shot selected, inferior shot deleted.
Subject was a broken white plant pot with blue floral design placed at 15 metres (ca. 16.5 yards or 50 feet).
Note - the camera will not display the exact f stop for some lenses with TCs attached (when the minimum exceeds f8) so you can calculate the exact stop yourselves from the camera max f stop + TCs. I don't find this particularly relevant for two reasons :
a) you can't reduce this minimum f stop for the lense + TC combination
b) I wouldn't be using faster lenses at those smaller apertures.

Post Processing
Auto Curves all shots to make viewing easier for darker shots.
Resizing for upload to online storage (1250 x 1080) + Forum compression.

Conditions
Bright but overcast. Sun directly behind the tripod (early afternoon). No wind. Sheltered garden. Dog was not permitted to chew, bury or otherwise molest the photographic equipment. A cup of tea was consumer after 1 hour. No toilet breaks.

Lenses Used.
S150 = Sigma 50-150 / f2.8 (this was the lense currently on the camera so I added it to the test anyway) @ 150mm
F210 = Pentax F 70-210 / f4 - f5.6 @210
DA55300 = Pentax DA 55-300 / f4 - f5.8 @300
*300 = Pentax DA*300 / f4
T500 = Tamron BB 500 Mirror / f8
SMC300 = SMC Takumar 300 / f4 - NB. No TC shots taken as I didn't want to risk the adapter getting stuck on one of them ! Also note an error in exposure settings (mistakenly f6.3 instead of f8).

Teleconverters Used.
P17 = Pentax AFA x1.7
T14 = Tamron Pz x1.4

Combinations Tested.
S150 (no TC) (+T14) (+P17) - NB. Stacked TCs unresponsive so no shot taken.
F210 (no TC) (+T14) (+P17) (T14+P17)
DA55300 (no TC) (+T14) (+P17) (T14+P17) - NB. Focus lock achieved with P17 only 1 in 5 attempts. MF used for T14+P17 as no focus lock could be achieved in AF.
*300 (no TC) (+T14) (+P17) (T14+P17)
T500 (no TC) (+T14) (+P17) - NB. Stacked TCs - focus lock unresponsive so no shot taken.
Various 300mm @ 100%
Various 500mm @ 100%
Various 700mm @ 100%

Draw your own conclusions !

Pentax K5: Wich Lens to buy

You could get the K5 with kit lens (not for the WR - unless you live in the wilds or sport shoot in the rain then it's over-rated to be honest) and add one of two lenses (the excellent 28-75 you mentioned or the 55-300). You have the excellent 50/1.7 for low light if you don't mind MF.

Personally for your budget I'd first sell your 28 & 80-200 and I'd get the K5, Tamron 17-50 & Pentax 55-300 - not f2.8 of course - (if not immediately then when funds permit), along with your 50/1.7 that is a very nice kit.

Does that have a 'Constable' feel to it ? My first thought on viewing.

Simply love the 135/2 DC, it is the best portrait lens I own. Simply brilliant.

Here's a couple of shots from my visit yesterday to Xi Tang, a water town (like a mini-venice, China has a lot of these 1,000+ year old villages dotted around). Most of my night time shots were all with a D800E + Sigma 35/1.4 however I also have a few daytime shots taken with the A7 and the Zeiss ZF2 Makro Planar 100/2.

10 secs. ISO 100. f8.

So despite my kit woes (Contax G adaptor wasn't delivered though my Contax R90 was and my OM adaptor arrived but the Oly Zuiko 24/2.8 didn't !) I was still able to enjoy the FE 55/1.8 on the new Sony A7 during my trip to my wife's hometown. We drove the 5 hours there from Shanghai (great roads) and from there, after a short break, drove the final couple of hours out into the beautiful countryside of Wencheng County in Zhejiang Province in China.

This the first shot I have processed. It's of the 207m high (close to 700 feet) Bailinshan Waterfall. The second is a near 100% crop. I am able to compare these next to the shots from my primary for the day, a D800E and Zeiss 21mm. They did well, very well.

Huge CosPlay expo in Shanghai and I've always wanted to give this a try. It was absolutely crazy in there, so many people ! This is the first I've processed. I'll put up a series once I've finished the processing.

D800E & D300/2.8 VRII (the only way I could near any of those in costume) ! I thought I'd be using the 35/1.4 and 135/2 the most :(

A long weekend trip with the guys, primarily for birding but they indulged me for a few A7 shots here and there :D

For anyone that hasn't tried these new Sony full frame mirrorlesses (A7, A7r, A7s) yet ... they are simply awesome !

First 500kms to Huangshan Mtn (absolutely drenched by an extended thunderstorm which rained off our visit whilst on the mountain, and stopped the cable cars for 2 hours, saw my D800E and one friend's 1D Mk IV survive in the mini-waterfall we were under but my other friend's 6D died an unnatural death :(

Visibility was down to 20-50m due to clouds and the storm so we departed and drove further South to the county (and town) of Wu Yuan in Jiangxi Province - this area is a dream for landscapers and lovers of ancient villages and towns, as well as birders. Weather was much better here !

Sony A7 + Rokker 35-70 Macro 1/50, ISO 50, probably f8

This park is a very popular place for pre-wedding shoots.

I didn't intrude but sat off to one side of the tog ....... so didn't get the benefit of their reflectors :(

A7 & Zeiss 100/2 Makro Planar ZF2. Softened and given 'glow'.

Doing far more birding than scenic/city photography of late. It's tough to carry 8kg birding kit plus 8kg backpack on daily 10-16kms hikes in mountains or rainforests, never mind an extra landscape lens too !

All D3s.

Early morning at Fraser Hill, Malaysia. 300/2.8

The road from Gaoligongshan to Tengchong in Yunnan, China. Unfortunately I simply couldn't get any closer to the edge of the 200m drop-off to exclude the reeds. Sigma 24-105/4 @ 24mm

5 mins before an amazing storm that turned day into night (25C but still hail-stones the size of golf-balls - they hurt) ! mm strangely missing from the EXIF but I think this is the Sigma 24-105/4 again.

The best way in and out of the Taman Nagara National Park is via the Tembeling river up to Kuala Tahan. 600mm / f5.6 / 1/2000

The village I stayed in, Baihualin on Gaoligongshan Mountain in Yunnan, China. Sigma 24-105/4 @ 58mm

I've been in full processing mode for more than a week now to get that out of the way before a trip to Fraser Hill & Taman Nagara, Malaysia later this month. However I've been popping in, enjoying some of the really enjoyable great work here (love seeing all these birds I've never heard of !), and dispensing 'Likes', as opposed to quoting/commenting on shots, as I'm lazy that way !

Full Trip Report here : Tengchong & Gaoligongshan, Yunnan, China (New & Improved) :) - BirdForum

Here are a few more of the processed shots from Tengchong/Gaoligongshan in Yunnan, South China (bordering Burma) :

Two shots just to set the scene (overlooking the mountain village I stayed in)

Blue-Fronted Redstart

Another shot of the Rusty-fronted Barwing

Red-tailed Laughingthrush

Another shot of the Red-faced Leocichla

Finally my new favourite Bulbul (not usually my favourite birds but this one is lovely), the Red-vented Bulbul !

I'm just back from a week at Tengchong & Gaoligongshan in the Eastern Himalayas in Yunnan Province, Southern China. With borders with Burma (Myanmar), Vietnam and Laos that may give you an idea of where this spectacular province is. From 6,500m asl in the mountainous North East you can travel 865kms to the lowland tropical rainforests in the South East and still remain in this province.

Yunnan currently has ca. 848 bird species (inc. 110 endemics) in just this single province alone, along with 26 minority tribes so you can understand why it's a heady brew for birding culture vultures :D

I just love this place ! Few towns & villages and even fewer people up in the mountains. I rarely saw more than 3 or 4 people a day (compare that to the 23-25 million in Shanghai where I live), an acquaintance recently spent 5 days up there without seeing a soul.

These are just from the start of my processing, I took 6k - 7k shots during the week and have so far whittled that down to ca. 2k.

The last 3 were all relatively high ISO shots (4,000 & up) taken early morning.

Rufous-vented Yuhina

Japanese White-eye

Red-faced Liocichia (of the Laughingthrush family)

Rusty-fronted Barwing

We were in Valencia (Spain) over Xmas / New Year for family celebrations and our in-laws 60th birthday party. Wonderful city - really gorgeous, these are the first shots processed from there and are of the Central Market - one of my favourite places in the city

All taken with the Zeiss 21mm.

Lovely Munia Ken ! Thanks for reminding me too - I have some other Munia shots that I had totally forgotten to process from last December !!

One of my favourite little birds is the White Rumped Munia (also called 'Mannekin' and has other AKAs). There are three species in China, the Scaly Breasted, White Rumped, and the Black Headed (if that's what it's still called ) :D

These tiny birds are 10-11cms (3.9 to 4.3 ins) and weigh about 10g (0.35 oz) each.
