Heimaey Promontory, Westmann Islands

The landlady at the guesthouse (I thought it better to find a B&B than to camp out in this weather !) said that the highest point on the Westmann Islands (this is on the way up there) is the windiest place in Iceland, one of the windiest countries anywhere in the world anyway.
With a storm on the way it was blowing at 100kph (ca. 65mph) during this shot (tough to stabilise !) on Heimaey Island and later I was blown off my feet twice, before I reached safety in the lee of the lighthouse at the top ... and then I could have lit a match :D

That is the Vatnajökull Glacier just visible on the mainland. Iceland’s Vatnajökull glacier is Europe’s largest icecap. Vatnajökull (2,110 m) is the largest glacier in Iceland and it’s also the largest glacier mass in Europe.

Thanks :D

I haven't tried the Zeiss 15 as around Shanghai it's a not a focal length I used too often but I knew for Iceland it would be, hence buying the Tamron 15-30 after all of it's stellar reviews. If you have the 14-24 I can't see any reason to swap unless you really, really needed the VC. I also have the Zeiss 21mm but when driving / in-out the car 50 times a day the flexibility of the Tamron won me over.

Next year's hiking (if my damaged ankle & knee ligaments recover sufficiently) I'll likely go for an A7r with the Kolari mod. and add a Leica WATE to cover the wide end. Huge reduction in weight and filter size.

I bought one for a just completed month long trip to Iceland via Abu Dhabi (Grand Mosque top of my list). Superb. Minimal distortion, great flare resistance, very sharp to the corners and VC and f2.8 of course.

Snowies like it cold. The shot below was taken at -45C during a recent trip to Inner Mongolia, the coldest it reached was -50C though we did have some 'mild' days as warm as -15/-20C too.

Thanks TS !

There are a number of ways, and locations (not all on the same river as this tradition used to be quite widespread in the South of China). Often they are close enough to the river banks that a long lens will more than suffice, you can get round trips out to the shoals next to where they fish, in rivers and seasons where it's safe (which is what I did here, the boatmen split the fee with them), or you can actually hire them to pose for shots (some are found doing this next to popular tourist locations - but those are really corny). They are actual fishermen, who also do this on the side, though the tourist trade probably pays them more than they can make fishing and is actually helping to keep this tradition alive.

Does that have a 'Constable' feel to it ? My first thought on viewing.

Simply love the 135/2 DC, it is the best portrait lens I own. Simply brilliant.

One of my favourite shots from a recent trip with my wife to the Yangshuo area on the Li River, Guangxi, China.

Here's a couple of shots from my visit yesterday to Xi Tang, a water town (like a mini-venice, China has a lot of these 1,000+ year old villages dotted around). Most of my night time shots were all with a D800E + Sigma 35/1.4 however I also have a few daytime shots taken with the A7 and the Zeiss ZF2 Makro Planar 100/2.

10 secs. ISO 100. f8.

Following on from the CosPlay Shanghai - Solo single shot I put up earlier. Here is the first Series from the day. D800E / 135/2 DC and mainly the 300/2.8 VRII (all wide open).

OK you can't see her outfit but I like it anyway ;)

Included this one again since it is a part of the series.

Huge CosPlay expo in Shanghai and I've always wanted to give this a try. It was absolutely crazy in there, so many people ! This is the first I've processed. I'll put up a series once I've finished the processing.

D800E & D300/2.8 VRII (the only way I could near any of those in costume) ! I thought I'd be using the 35/1.4 and 135/2 the most :(

Me ? The older I get the more camera-shy I become.

The 100/2 Makro Planar is fantastic lens. The only downside is that for a macro lens (at 1:2) you need to add extension tubes (around 50mm perhaps ? I'm not sure how to calculate that) to get to 1:1.

Thank you :D

This park is a very popular place for pre-wedding shoots.

I didn't intrude but sat off to one side of the tog ....... so didn't get the benefit of their reflectors :(

A7 & Zeiss 100/2 Makro Planar ZF2. Softened and given 'glow'.

A long weekend trip with the guys, primarily for birding but they indulged me for a few A7 shots here and there :D

For anyone that hasn't tried these new Sony full frame mirrorlesses (A7, A7r, A7s) yet ... they are simply awesome !

First 500kms to Huangshan Mtn (absolutely drenched by an extended thunderstorm which rained off our visit whilst on the mountain, and stopped the cable cars for 2 hours, saw my D800E and one friend's 1D Mk IV survive in the mini-waterfall we were under but my other friend's 6D died an unnatural death :(

Visibility was down to 20-50m due to clouds and the storm so we departed and drove further South to the county (and town) of Wu Yuan in Jiangxi Province - this area is a dream for landscapers and lovers of ancient villages and towns, as well as birders. Weather was much better here !

Sony A7 + Rokker 35-70 Macro 1/50, ISO 50, probably f8

My thoughts exactly. Simply because they are so small in the shot it would look much better whole body. Hope you 'shot wide & cropped' ?

Well two lenses arrived to much excitement, late yesterday afternoon (Zeiss Makro Planar 100/2) and today (Contax N 70-200). Unfortunately I found the Contax has a faulty AF/MF switch and rotating the aperture ring in MF mode elicits no change in aperture at all - bummer :( The seller has agreed to a return.

Anyway into the garden I go to get a few practice shots in with the 100/2 on the Sony A7 .... I'm going to love this lens, can't wait to use it for landscape and portraits too :)

Grey and overcast isn't a bad thing for macro but it did affect the handheld shutter speeds when trying to shoot at f8 (and I couldn't be bothered to bring out the macro rails & flashes), most of these are taken at f2.8 (the aperture doesn't show up in the EXIF). So here are some shots of the smallest flowers I could find :

ca.100% crop

ca. 100% crop

So despite my kit woes (Contax G adaptor wasn't delivered though my Contax R90 was and my OM adaptor arrived but the Oly Zuiko 24/2.8 didn't !) I was still able to enjoy the FE 55/1.8 on the new Sony A7 during my trip to my wife's hometown. We drove the 5 hours there from Shanghai (great roads) and from there, after a short break, drove the final couple of hours out into the beautiful countryside of Wencheng County in Zhejiang Province in China.

This the first shot I have processed. It's of the 207m high (close to 700 feet) Bailinshan Waterfall. The second is a near 100% crop. I am able to compare these next to the shots from my primary for the day, a D800E and Zeiss 21mm. They did well, very well.

Thanks Hin but I'd have to pay over US$200 just for the import duty on the lens (any lens, even a US$5 one) .. it's why there are so many 'grey imports' here. Everyone goes over to Japan or HK to buy them ! The Contax G range is superb though - why are you selling them ?

A Sony A7 was added to the stable last week. Sold the 80-400G to fund it and few great MF lenses at silly prices (Contax G 90/2.8 and Olympus OM 28/2.8) plus the FE 55/1.8 and a bunch of adaptors (with a PK on the way). Excited to see what the FF sensor / camera can do but enjoyed taking it along with the D800E, to save me changing lenses, over the weekend. It is most certainly a terrible idea for anyone suffering from LBA !

I'm guessing gentle spot-lighting Travis. You have to be very careful using flash (and spot-lighting) on night birds because you can blind them for up to an hour, making them vulnerable to predation or even endangering chicks in the nest since the parent can not return until visual acuity returns. As a result of reading the below interesting article by an expert on the subject, I now very rarely use my Better Beamer, and even then only for fill, and am far more careful to avoid directly shining a powerful spotlight into birds' eyes.
