Hi Cipher, the light is magnificent in this portrait.
How did you mount it to PK ? Curiosity.
And, how would you compare this lens to the P6 80mm Biometar (which I own) ?

Thank you very much, Sir! This has been my very first attempt at using my old Tessar in a (semi-) macro setup. I like the rendering, the contrast, the 'pop' effect. Looks like I'll have to explore further this setup...

Most modern lenses are well corrected and very sharp. To me the real issue is rendering i.e. if a lens "has it" - pixie dust or the like. This is mostly subjective, of course, however the community (this forum, among other) quite often converges in this matter. Pixie dust distribution is not proportional to lens price.
If i would be the OP, i would try to compare the offerings in his target market from this perspective and make my choice from my subjective feelings towards the aesthetic and artistic value of images as rendered by the compared lenses. A useful source might be pbase.com and, to a lesser extend, pixel-peeper.com - next to renting lenses, of course.

Aaaaaah - thank you my friend, now i feel much better, having only 2 or 3 lenses for each focal length! I am relieved! I have only very minor, even neglectible LBA! :D

Just my 2 cents since i never tried the samyang/rokinon etc. I would heartily agree with Yeatzee (first page of the thread), the M85 has this special magic with rendering - to me it's the poorman's FA77: it has pixie dust as well.
However i always put a hood on it.

I've got this lens from *bay for a few euros - just to try it out. Impressions are mixed: my Tessar is very sharp, i love it for portraits. It is very good in short distances or macro (with rings). It has a nice rendering and superb bokeh. However it lacks the vivid colors and contrast of modern coatings, some of which can be compensated with your software.
As for the rigid focusing ring, it is a very common finding with these old lenses and no problem at all. You'll find numerous tutorials on how to dismantle this lens and re-lube it. A 15 minute job for me.

Aha? They try to sell it for twice the price of the (tough to beat) Tamron 17-50? Marketing has definitively some mysteries...

Hi, to me portrait and street feels a bit contradictory with same focal length... thus you might want a zoom going from wide to short tele such as 16/17-50. The Tamron 17-50 is very sharp and fits in your budget. The Pentax 16-50 is expensive and has the SDM burden. The Sigma 17-50 is not as regarded.
For the Tamron, avoid the VC version (rumored to have a modified, lesser optical formula), prefer a made in Japan one, and check it for focusing issues before buying.
See samples of what it can do here.
Alternatively you might go with two manual lenses such as M3.5/28 or K3.5/28 for street, and any Pentax 50mm for portrait. You'll get better rendering, Pentax colors, and superb bokeh at the cost of manual focusing. Budget would be much less than 300$ as well.

Sorry guys, but this new lens frustrates me. Ok it's cheap and makes another low-level entry point in the Pentax system, but you had already the 18-55 for that purpose, which is very good at 35mm BTW - and perhaps even better.
What puzzles me more is the additional redundancy in a lens system that suffers already from complexity and redundancy. The 35mm range is already covered by DA*15-50, DA18-55, DA16-45, DA17-70, DA35, DA40, FA31... Frankly I don't understand Pentax marketing, given limited development and production means.

please don't compare pentax limiteds with regular lenses of other brands. Its a different market, as you noticed. Limiteds are loaded with special pixie dust!

To me it's obvious. You're watched constantly by either mini-drones of a secret CIA project, or by small cylindric aliens that try to understand what you're doing with a camera.
Please, please forgive my wrong sense of humor... I couln't resist. Seriously you should give this camera to repair.

Trig, woooooow! those three are your masterpieces!
@ Hello_photo: in the pic of the train on the bridge, the left background trees appear very mushy. Is this due to internet resizing? With your aperture set at f/10 I was expecting better IQ there...
