Has anyone done any test shots using manual controls? I am particuarly interested and in Rokinon but all manual input is good. There is a lot of info about auto but i only shoot manual.
How does the multi white balance perform? With my k-x i shot manual wb mostly to lessen my post production time.
Is the manual focus alert more consistent?
I did notice the shooting mode locks on the k-3. It did not in my k-x and it did drive me nuts a couple of times. LOL.
Any info will be appreciated. I received my k-3 on Nov 7 but have been on the fence about upgrading. Now i have decided to charge the battery and get to shooting in the morning if not later tonight with some street/candid shots.
monday or tuesday i will do some in studio shooting with monolights.
Thanks,
Vincent

I am a big fan of manual primes. I have a horusbennu 50mm 1.7f & both rokinon 85mm 1.4f & 35mm 1.4f that i use for walk around and candid shots. Each depending on my mood. When at a function or event my goto for lens is my 35mm. I do miss or goof on some shots, but that is my challenge to me to learn to shoot better.

you used spot metering... what did you focus when you pushed the green button? You have to be careful with spot metering when shot being taken is with mixed light/dark areas.

here are a few places loaded with info for lighting. StudioLighting.net ... JensenBest Photographic Studio Lighting .... These are two of the sources I use often for reference on what's needed for what I am trying to do. Studiolighting has articles/videos to help narrow down the least cost effective way to get what you want.
Hope this helps. Happy hunting.. You can ask 10 people and get 11 different answers.

No  .. Just checking. With all of this MP/video war going on making sure i am not missing out on anything. i am interested in a 2nd body so I can keep them on separate presets, but when I do invest in one I do want to upgrade. I know what my Kx can do.

These are good points for me to consider. I have gotten so used to listening for the beep and watching for the indicator to focus  . I only have totally manual prime lenses though

Thanks, that is what I am feeling. I think Pentax nailed it with the Kx. I really enjoy shooting next to Canon and Nikon fans, and they see at my shot and start asking me about my glass and camera  . There seems to be a flood of new DSLRs with emphasis on better video. Does this mean they really have hit a wall on producing better optics for stills?

Sparks I use only manual focus lenses.. rokinon 85mm 1.4 ($349), and the horusbennu 50mm 1.8 ($66). they work pretty good for me. Reading forums of different brands, a lot of people are not satisfied with AF. Also there is so many complaints about front-focusing and back-focusing. with auto focus I put the focus where I want it

Please somebody provide a compelling argument why I should demote my K-x and draft a K-01.
ps I shoot mainly in studio environment using fast primes and focus on portraiture, headshots. I consistently get quality 20x30 prints.
Thanks

I had been faced with a similar situation. I would suggest to choose the top 30 or so that tells the story you would like others to see of your work. There was a young lady I had several shots with. I would give her the top 10 or 15 shots for the session. I finally gave in to her and handed her a disk from one of our shoots with about 50 photos on it. I regretted it. Mostly because it helped me to realize that all of those shots were not a representation of my best work. Now I heavily critique all that I let leave my control.
I hope this helps.

Thanks, Clinton. I know auto is easier, but I don't like easy. I get a special satisfaction when a manual shot comes out good ( I know, weird, but that is what drives me). from my perspective, these were the best targets I have ever had to shoot. I am just not there yet.

Clark, I get your point about being a big critic of my own work, but i'm not going to kick myself too hard for this one. Remember this was my first public shoot. Any time I shot in the past has been with people I know that knows that I am an amateur. There are reasons I was focused on getting a decent shot. Composition and poses will come later.. But first I know I have to learn to understand my equipment and conditions.
other than cost the main reason I shoot all manual is so I can understand changes in conditions.
Other than my wife and son, I have shot only one other person- now this.
It may be old hat for you but this was a giant leap for me.
Thanks, Vincent

clinton, i tried the catch in focus in the past & it sucks. I posted 5 more random shots. I do not dare think that every shot is a winner. I read about pros that talk about shooting 300 photos and having only a small portion being keepers.I used 2.8 for runway shots.
i'm right there with you about having to nail it. that's part of the reason the one's I cropped it was a 8x10 crop. I want to know where I stand. this way when I get better I will be better.
This was a major challenge for my mf skills.
thanks, Vincent

ramair, yes it was a small market local fashion show in orlando. I shouldn't have put shutter speed. It probably was nowhere near 1/60. ( sorry for the misinfo). I do remember shooting at 800 for certain.
The group's organizer is a professional photog. it was only about 13 photographers, all but 3 were amateurs, attending the event.
it was fun and an exciting adventure.
95 percent of my shots came at the end of the catwalk during their pose.
Thanks, Vincent

thanks clark. the first 1 was shot in the dressing room at 1.4 ( trying to be good some day). I have about 15 photos of the second to last and I think she is gorgeous. If you are referencing the lipstick-keep in mind this was a fashion show (they can be extreme).
What do you think of my white balance, and color. this was my first time adjusting white balance in post production. I have 195 photos that I kept and adjusted. About not seeing more of the clothing, I was so focused on getting a keepable/usable photo. These are amateur models, and I am amateur and hoping to get some experience networking and someday getting some paid work.
the 50-135 sounds good, but not sure if I want a zoom. I have a 50mm, 85mm, I was seriously considering a 135mm prime. The professionals there were shooting with 70-200.
of course out of 12 photographers I was the only pentax in the group.
On the bright side, I could not charge my AA batteries because the canon & nikon users had all the outlets full of their batteries lol.
Thanks,
Vincent

Thanks omega leader,
I was so focused on trying to snap a shot in focus that I was not concentrating on the clothing. I wanted to come away with some keepable shots. These are amateur models, and I am hoping to get some paid work someday through networking in groups such as this. The second from the last was good at pausing at the end of the catwalk. I have 195 photos that I think of as keepable and maybe usable. I hope the models like at 1 of their photos I snapped.
Thanks,
Vincent

I was able to attend a fashion show as a photographer with a group I meet with. My first attempt shooting on a runway. It was quite a challenge for me to shoot fully manual with moving subjects.
Two of the models have seen a few of the photos and think they are good.
But I know they do not have the critique power of the people in this forum. :D You guys rock and only make others better. Which is why I am posting a few here before I post them in the forum.
No flash was used, only lighting was stage lighting.
Thanks for your feedback,
Vincent

Thanks wjt,. "joint". Neither her nor myself knows anything about posing. I am attempting to learn, and she just wanted to take some pregnancy pics. The situation was right for me to jump in and give it a go.
I shoot with manual primes. This was done solely with a horusbennu 50mm 1.4. I was very concerned with getting a pic in focus. lol. Thank you for your comment.

Thanks SpecialK. #5 was under a blue tarp - somehow I knew it was a bad idea, but had to try anyway.huh. Funny you noticed her demeanor. She is a very happy person always laughing and smiling. Mutual friends tell me that she looks mad in the pictures. I think she was trying to be serious and not appear goofy.
Looks like I have to do a better job at directing. Lots of new grounds for me.
once again thanks for your input

This is my first attempt at a photo shoot with the intention of a photo shoot. Let me know what you think, and how I could make the next one better. This was a sunny day, high sun, around 4pm (Orlando). Though it was sunny the photos were taken in the shade and I was in the shade also. Take it easy don't bust my ego

I use eneloop. I use the the eneloop charger that comes with it. They hold up pretty good. Eneloop sells a set with 8aa's so you always have a spare set on hand. These batteries do not have to be depleted before you charge them. They do not have a memory.
I hope this helps
