Cheap A series and Vivitar Series One lenses

I found this listing on craigslist for a bunch of Pentax cameras and lenses : http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/ele/3159007108.html

It has a Pentax-A 50mm 1.7 lens and a couple Vivitar Series 1 lenses for pretty cheap. I am wondering if anyone can let me know if they think these lenses would be fully functional with Auto Aperture on a Pentax K-r?

Lastly, that Samyang 100-500mm zoom lens looks like a beast! Does anyone have any experience with one of those? I didn't find anything in the search about it. Do you think it is worth the asking price?

Why I don't sell on ebay...technical lens help needed!

First, my apologies for you having to go through this... I know it sucks! I have dealt with this type of situation before. Here is how it worked in my situation (and I am assuming it will be VERY similar in yours):

Listed item on ebay with "no returns accepted". Item clearly explained and sold as is.
Sold and shipped to buyer via USPS Priority Mail (fully insured).
Buyer received it and contacted me stating that the item was broken (not as described).
Since this was a DSLR camera (not cheap), I had dated photos/videos of it working the day before I shipped it, and I was unsure of how to handle the situation... so I refused the return/refund (stating that the item was in working condition when I shipped it and was sold "as-is" with no returns.
Buyer opened a claim with eBay for "item not as described". Ebay got statements from both of us along with photos and other evidence to support our claims.
Ebay sided with the buyer. I escalated/appealed the claim. Ebay still sided with the buyer, leaving me no other choice but to refund the buyer (ebay automatically charges your credit card on file with them for the refund and pays the buyer once the buyer provides proof that they have shipped the item back to you).
There is no person at ebay that you can speak to or communicate with directly. Don't even bother trying to email them. You receive an auto-generated email saying they will get back to you within 48 hours and you will never hear from them. Also, ebay ALWAYS sides with the buyer because of their new "buyer protection" policy. Another part of ebay's policy (which they will try to tell you is the policy of USPS and that isn't true) is that USPS will only pay the claim to the original sender of the package. It clearly states in the USPS policy that either the sender or recipient of the package can file the insurance claim and receive the payment for it. However, it would be in your best interest to have the lens returned to you and file the USPS insurance claim yourself (so the buyer doesn't get that PLUS the automatic ebay refund).

I received the broken DSLR camera back and opened a claim with USPS (thank god it was fully insured)!
It is all done online (usps.com) and there is nobody at USPS that you can talk to on the phone to file/check on your claim.
You basically provide them with the shipment tracking number, information about its contents (ebay page screen print or link showing item was not broken at time of sale helps BIG TIME), written statement from the recipient (buyer) *email works fine* stating that the item was broken when they received it, and that is about all.
Took a few weeks for USPS to approve the claim (and the status of the claim seemed to never update, EVER). They never contacted me for additional info or anything.
After the claim was approved, I received a check in the mail from USPS after a couple more weeks for the total insured value (that I paid for on the initial shipment).

I hope that helps you in your situation. I definitely wouldn't issue a refund to the buyer through Paypal, or by any other means, until an eBay claim has been settled. The buyer could end up getting refunded twice (and nothing you can do about it). Communicate with the buyer and let them know that you are willing to refund their money but it has to be done correctly through eBay so you have written documentation that the item was broken during shipment to provide to USPS for the insurance claim. Other than that, make sure your address on your eBay account is correct and current as that is where eBay will instruct/require the buyer to send the lens back to. Also, make sure you get a written statement (email) from the buyer stating that they noticed the item was broken immediately upon opening the package (doesn't really matter if the package is dented or otherwise damaged... but if it is, get photos or video of that for sure!

The ebay claim does not negatively affect your account in any way. It is not like negative feedback. The other thing is making sure to communicate with the buyer throughout the process is key. You should reassure them that you are fully willing to refund their money (as long as the proper steps are taken) and hopefully they will be willing to leave you positive or no feedback for the transaction.

Good luck and feel free to PM me if you have any questions!

P.S. - Ebay sucks for selling. They offer absolutely no protection for sellers and their policies/involvement with paypal gives them a lot of power to just "freeze" your money or accounts with either website for issues/problems with one or the other and take money from your bank account, credit cards, or any other form of payment that you have on file with either website. Doesn't seem right (or even legal to me in some instances)... but I guess that is what we all agree to when we *digitally* sign the 50+ page Terms of Service agreements.

I would like to participate and do a review.

I have a few choices that don't appear to be taken yet that I could review.

1. SMC Pentax 85-210mm f/3.5 (with close focus attachment) : SMC Pentax 85-210mm F3.5 Lens Reviews - Pentax Lens Reviews & Pentax Lens Database
2. Pentax-F 50mm f/1.7 (after testing several 50mm lenses, this is the one I kept and use daily): SMC Pentax-F 50mm F1.7 Lens Reviews - Pentax Lens Reviews & Pentax Lens Database
3. Pentax-DA 55-300mm f/4.5-5.8 (after extensive testing of both modern consumer grade zoom lenses and classic zooms like the Vivitar Series 1 70-210mm lenses, I still can't find many lenses that can hold a candle to the DA 55-300). SMC Pentax-DA 55-300mm F4-5.8 ED Lens Reviews - Pentax Lens Reviews & Pentax Lens Database
4. Pentax-A 70-210mm f/4 vs Pentax-F 70-210 f/4-5.6 (I have tested them both thoroughly).

Let me know what you want the review done on or if I can do more than one. I really, really want to win the DA 18-135mm lens so I am going to do whatever it takes.

PentaxForums.com Marketplace Listing

Tokina AT-X AF 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 (near mint, EXCELLENT condition) - $550USD (SOLD)

Item Description
Here is your opportunity to own a copy of the VERY RARE Tokina AT-X AF 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 zoom lens.
This lens is considered by many to be one of the best consumer grade telephoto zoom lenses ever available for Pentax cameras and I would agree that not many lenses can produce the sharpness and quality of images this lens can across the entire 80-400mm range.

I would never be selling it but I ended up getting two copies through ebay auctions at the same time (didn't expect to win both) and to my surprise they were both in excellent condition so I am keeping one and selling the other. It was crazy to find 2 of these at the same time as I have been searching for one for over a year with no luck. I am going to pass on the good fortune and sell this great zoom lens for what I bought it for, $550.

The only reason this lens cannot be listed as "like new" or "mint" is because I do not have the original packaging, lens caps, and warranty. The glass is flawless. I really tried to find a speck of dust or anything to report and there simply isn't any. The coating is beautiful, the lens body is excellent (can't find any dings or brassing of any sorts), plus this thing is built like a tank! Everything is perfectly functional and it autofocuses fast on my K-x. This lens will come with generic front and rear lens caps as well as a 72mm Tiffen Haze-1 filter in good shape (worth $30 alone).
It is a wonderful lens to add to any collection!
It was a big step up for me from the DA 55-300mm lens. The Tokina 80-400mm lens is faster on the long end and gives you an extra 100mm of focal range. The best part is the Tokina is comparatively very similar in size to the DA 55-300mm lens so you don't have to lug around a Bigma just to get those super telephoto shots. The in-body stabilization seems to work great with this Tokina lens, allowing me to shoot hand-held at 400mm in less than ideal lighting situations. I found that rather impressive.

I will also consider trading this lens for either of the following :
Pentax DA 12-24mm
Pentax DA 18-135mm

I wrap and package lenses very well. I always insure the package for the total amount of the transaction to cover against any damage or loss. Fortunately, I have had no issues or problems thus far. Please refer to my 100% feedback score from the 18 other Pentaxians that have bought items from me recently.

I am leaving town early Saturday and will be gone for a couple weeks.

The Pentax-M lens buyer has not paid yet so if you are interested in buying it and can make the payment via paypal by Saturday, please PM me. I will make you a good deal.

The SMC Takumar 50mm 1.4 is a beautiful lens that currently sells on eBay for $150-200+. I could really use the cash for my trip so I am offering a special price on it through the end of Friday (I have lowered the price $40 off the already discounted price). I am also going to throw in a Pentax M42 - K mount adapter so you can use this and all M42 lenses on your Pentax DSLR camera AND I have a Vernon brand M42 mount 2x Teleconverter that I will throw in for free as well. You really can't beat this deal for one of the sharpest, fastest, and most well-built lens in the Pentax arsenal. Get it now because I will be withdrawing it Saturday if it doesn't sell.

All items listed below are used and in used condition.
Individual conditions details are listed under each item.

I am not the original owner of any of these items.

SMC TAKUMAR 1:1.4/50mm - $140 SOLD

This is a magnificent M42 mount lens. It is very sharp plus it renders wonderful colors and contrast. It is built like an absolute tank and is in Very Good - Excellent Condition. The glass is spotless. No scratches, fungus, haze, or yellowing commonly found on this era of lens. For the sake of declaration, there are a few dust particles but nothing that affects the image in any way, shape, or form. Everything works perfectly on the lens and the aperture blades are snappy as can be. The only brassing on the exterior of the lens is very slightly on the mounting threads (obviously, its a screw mount!) and 2 tiny little spots on the ridges of the aperture ring (so small it is hard to notice or photograph). There is 1 tiny little spot of paint loss on the outer edge of the filter ring (less than 1mm that is not visible when a filter is on the lens). I just wanted to be thorough so you know exactly what you are getting. I have owned a few copies of this lens and this is by far the nicest one I have owned and has produced some of the best photos I own in this focal range. Can be used on ANY Pentax camera from the Spotmatics through the new Pentax DSLRs. I use it regularly on my K-x with incredible results. This lens can also be adapted to be used on 4/3, micro 4/3, Canon EOS, and other camera mounts. It truly is quite the universal mount. Comes with original front and rear lens caps.
Buy before Saturday, Sept 4th and receive a free Pentax M42 to K adapter for this to fit on your DSLR camera PLUS a Vernon M42 2x Teleconverter!

SMC Pentax-A 1:1.7 50mm - $90 SOLD

In my opinion, this lens is the best bargain in Pentax history. You get a lens that is fast, great in low-light, tack sharp, performs wonderfully with the A mount, is well built, and renders awesome photos. What more can you ask for... oh yeah, a great price too! This copy is in EXCELLENT condition. Not one mark on the body or glass. Numbering and lettering is bright and vivid. This lens essentially looks new. I can't even see any dust specks at all. Comes with original front and rear lens caps.

SMC Pentax-M 1:1.4 50mm - $75 SOLD

Another great lens for the money. This lens was my first 1.4 lens and has continued to blow my mind over and over again repeatedly with its shallow focus depths and beautiful bokeh. This lens sure can create some magic! Glass is in very good shape with no issues other than a few specks of dust. Body has little brassing around the aperture ring ridges and a few tiny paint loss spots on the edge of the filter ring (not visible with a filter on the lens). This lens captured some of my favorite macro photos in combination with a 2x macro teleconverter or with a reverse macro adapter. It works great with either one! Comes with original front and generic rear lens caps.

Please add $12 per transaction for shipping + handling.
Shipping will be provided by USPS Priority Mail (fully insured) and I will ship the item out within 24 hours of cleared payment via Paypal.
I would be happy to combine shipping for you if you want to buy more than 1 item.
I will also accept checks or money orders sent by mail.

I know I could probably get more money for these lenses if I sold them on eBay but I wanted to offer them here first and give PentaxForums members first pick and a little bit of a discount before I do that. One of the things I enjoy about this website is that I feel that most other members do things like that as well. It is also nice to know that you are buying from people who know the condition of what they are selling and will stand behind it. I offer a full refund (minus shipping) if the item is received not as described or damaged. Feel free to check out my marketplace feedback here : https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/feedback.php?u=23373

If you are not in the U.S. and are interested in buying any of these items,
please contact me by PM and let me know where you are located and we will see what we can work out.

Item for Sale
CPC Phase 2 28mm 2.8 Multicoated (Pentax-A)

Asking Price
$60 $40

Item Location
Seattle, WA

Item Description
For Sale :

Multi-Coated AUTO CPC PHASE 2 CCT 28mm f/2.8 prime lens - $60 NOW ONLY $40!!

I have been told it is a copy of the Pentax-A 28mm 2.8 and here is the information I have researched to support that:

First, the body appears identical to the Pentax-A version except for the markings and labels. Second, the optical properties of both lenses is the same.
They are both composed of 7 elements in 7 groups and all the other optical and mechanical qualities of both the CPC and the Pentax lens are the same, as you can see on the following websites:
CPC Phase 2 28/2.8
A 28/2.8

After some more research, I found this in an old issue of Keppler's SLR Notebook from circa 1984. "Those seeking a more moderately priced lens than the Pentax do have a line of Pentax-made Cosmicars."
It goes on to say, "CPC stands for Combined Products Corp., a reliable importer usually associated with Japanese-made lenses in various lens mounts. These, however, look cosmetically much like the Pentax-A lenses but are 20-25% cheaper."
So my conclusion from that is Pentax released the A line and designed a less expensive Taiwanese version of a few of the A lenses to sell as Cosmicar or CPC lenses. On the side of my copy it says "Cosmicar Taiwan ROC".

Keppler on Program Plus and Cosmicar - a photo on Flickriver

My personal thoughts and review of this lens:

This lens is quite impressive. It is in, what appears to be, completely unused condition. I don't think this lens was ever mounted to a camera other than myself testing it out. You can definitely tell it has always had the caps and skylight filter on it because the glass is perfect with no scratches, haze, or internal dust. I have seen a few CPC lenses that were Ricoh mount and all the A functions did not work. I want to make clear that this is a Pentax-A mount lens with no Ricoh pin and it works flawlessly as an A lens on both 35mm and DSLR cameras with no worry of gettting stuck or anything.

The image quality was very good during my testing with this lens. I was continuously surprised and impressed with what this lens was resolving. I have owned the Pentax-A 28mm before. I don't have the opportunity to compare them side by side but this CPC lens seems every bit as good as the Pentax-A lens was. The multi-coating seems to handle flaring well and CA/PF are little to none. Overall, it is a great wide-angle prime lens that should fit the bill if you have been looking for a Pentax-A 28mm but don't shell out $100+ for one. You will be happy with this lens. It produces wonderful images!

Lens comes with generic front and rear lens caps as well as a generic 49mm Skylight (1A) filter.

U.S. based buyers only please.

Legendary SMC Pentax 85-210mm f/3.5 (K series)

Do you have the 4.5 or 3.5? I did some test shots which I will post when I get back to my home computer on Monday against my Vivitar Series 1 70-210mm lenses (version 1 and version 3) and also against a Pentax-A 70-210mm f/4 and DA 55-300mm. I was blown away with the image quality of the K 85-210mm 3.5 lens. I have always been a huge fan of the Kiron and Komine made Vivitar Series 1 lenses and still use them regularly today in spite of owning modern AF lenses that cover the same focal range. If it was as light and compact as the DA 55-300 (regardless of it being manual focus), the K 85-210 3.5 would be my go to lens for most all of my telephoto needs. Even with the 2x K Rear Adapter, I get some great crisp and contrasty photos from it (with a K-x or Super Program).

My copy shows very little to no CA/PF and definitely not soft so maybe your copy needs cleaned or adjusted??

As for the weight and size issue.... yes it is fairly hefty but it feels more evenly distributed in front of my little K-x or Super Program than the shorter (but still heavy as a brick) Vivitar Series 1 70-210 f/2.8-4 (version 3). The weight of the K 85-210 3.5 actually helps with keeping your shooting steady when you are hand holding. If your not shooting hand-held, I guess weight doesn't really matter anyways.

My final verdict is: I LOVE IT! I was considering selling it because I have so many other lenses in this focal range and I have been offered upwards of $700 several times for my mint condition copy with the close focus attachment filter that lets it focus down to around 1.5 meters and the 2x K Rear Adapter but I think I might hang onto it, at least through the rest of summer. I know the second I would sell it, I would regret it and probably never find another copy in my life... especially not in mint condition!

I will post photos when I get home Monday. Thanks everyone for all your info and interest in this rare lens.:)

Thanks for all of your replies. I am going to do some testing of this lens against my Vivitar Series 1 70-210 f/3.5 (Kiron) and f/2.8-4 (Komine). I think they would be a decent match-up for the K 85-210 f/3.5 lens.

I have spoken with a couple other owners of this lens as well as a pretty knowledgeable local Pentax dealer who have all told me the lens with the included attachment filter and 2x rear adapter is worth $500-800 (depending on condition) and this one being mint would probably fall in the upper end of that.

Frederick9111 is correct, back then a zoom lens of this speed was very difficult and expensive to create, and therefore was expensive to buy. This lens was only produced by Pentax for 3 months in 1976 and the rumor is there were only 3,000 of them made. Can anyone either confirm or deny that with any evidence?

I will report back after I have had a chance to do some side-by-side testing with the Vivitar lenses.

Sigma 120-400mm f/4.5-5.6 for Pentax

Why would someone get both a 70-200mm 2.8 and the 120-400mm lenses, when you could just put a 2x TC on your 70-200mm 2.8 and make it a 140-400mm 5.6?

I am interested in buying a new lens that covers the extra reach of 400 or 500mm so this is one question I have come across myself. Is the image quality superior of using a Sigma 120-400mm or even the old 135-400mm over a Sigma 70-200mm 2.8 with a 2x TC. Is the image quality identical? ... or maybe even better leaning towards the 70-200 with TC?

The 70-200mm with TC would definitely give you more flexibility and a really fast zoom without the TC, but there has to be a reason why they would market the 135-400mm and now the 120-400mm lenses. Someone help me out and let me know what it is.

Lastly, anyone used any of these Sigma -400mm zooms and compared them to the Sigma APO AF 400mm prime or Tokina AT-X 400mm AF prime? I already own the DA 55-300mm and I am pretty happy with that, just could use a little more reach.

I just happened to pick up a mint copy of this very rare lens recently and I can see why they are so highly sought after. It feels wonderful in your hands. It is big, but not too big. It is heavy, but not too heavy. Most of all the image quality is quite fabulous. Sharp, contrasty, and colorful.

I wasn't even aware that I had purchased it as it came in a lot of some other camera gear that I bought. It appears that this lens was hardly ever used or maybe not even used at all. It is in immaculate shape. Even more rare, is that it came with the close focusing lens attachment and the SMC Pentax Rear Converter K T6-2x bundled with it.

I tried looking up some info online about it and found very little. Only 2-3 other accounts/reviews of this lens (all claiming it to be very rare and very good). This website says that the availability of this lens is once in a lifetime! K 85-210/3.5

As much as I would love to hold on to a truly legendary classic like this (especially in this condition), I am considering selling it to help raise money for my school tuition and maybe some other camera gear. Problem is, I have no clue as to what it is worth. How do you put a price tag on a lens that you have never seen sold before?

So if anyone has any clue as to what would be a ballpark figure of what this lens is worth in mint condition, please PM me and let me know.

Thanks!
