Couple from my first earnest outing with my 200-500/5.6. Long lenses are challenging but fun!

First was a group of ducks taking off right before I called it quits for the day:

And on my way out, someone pointed out a red-tailed hawk in a distant tree, and a recently-dispatched rabbit it had hung from a lower branch (for safe-keeping?)

Been pretty busy between work and evening classes lately, but got some time to do portraits in the park recently. Here's one I liked with a split-tone treatment:

A few from the past couple weeks. First two from a trip up to Victoria, BC, and the remaining from a backpacking trip this weekend at Yellow Aster Butte.

Did a macro romp about north of the Seattle Arboretum yesterday afternoon, and found aphids absolutely everywhere. Huge colonies of ants were swarming about tending to their livestock.

---------- Post added 07-30-2017 at 07:45 PM ----------

And while the ants may protect the aphids, others eat them for lunch:

Brave to get up there in the mountains so early in the season! I've restricted myself to the lowlands still, so far.

A couple more from recent macro outings:

In this case there was a lot of direct natural light, so there wasn't a need for a flash. That said, I was at a wider aperture as you noted -- the focal plane is very thin, but I think I just happened to be perpendicular to the fly's body, resulting in a decent amount of it being in focus.

One from yesterday:

Thanks! Yeah I plan to experiment a bit with the crop factor before I print a copy for my friend.

Here's this morning's effort at the same moon's set over the city skyline. This was a close thing -- I almost left before the moon reappeared behind those clouds, thinking it wouldn't happen. I'd like to pretend it was a story of perseverance, but in reality it was luck that I was still on-site. You can see from the photo that the gap between the mountain ridges and the band of cloud is less than the angular diameter of the moon itself, and before the moon emerged the contrast between sky and cloud was so low you couldn't tell the gap was there at all by the naked eye.

A friend is having his first son tomorrow, by scheduled c-section. He requested I get out and get an image of the "supermoon" going on to commemorate the occasion, and so with a bit of help from Photographer's Ephemeris and the US Naval Observatory's data feeds, I planned and took the following this evening:

I've another image planned tomorrow morning just before sunrise -- we'll see if I manage to crawl out of bed and get on location. :-)

To quote my own post on the photo:

There aren't many places in Seattle where one can find good foregrounds for a beachfront composition. One of the few is in Golden Gardens park on the north end of town, and for the past few years I have made the occasional journey to photograph the old pilings that emerge between the tides.

Every year they seem a little smaller, and fewer of them remain. Down the way some beach-goers were climbing on top of them and taking photos in makeshift praying mantis pose. I've seen these pilings wobble and sway under the gentlest tides, so even where the karate kid doesn't take its toll, I suspect the water and the barnacles will.

Will these be here in five more years?

I'm often jealous of your travels! I really like the texture and colors on the water of the last shot.

I don't make it over to canonical spots downtown with my camera as much as I used to, but felt like making a trek over to the Space Needle recently:

Here's one from this evening in Edmonds/Lynnwood along the water at a park I didn't know existed until I spent some time scrolling about Google maps earlier today:

A couple shots from yesterday in two (very) different environments. Woke up camped at Hidden Lake in a scree field along the North Cascades -- the night was unpleasantly spent inside a cloud that drowned out all sunset and sunrise light, but by midmorning the clouds broke and filled the valleys below dramatically. The abundant blueberries didn't hurt the spirits either:

Later in the day, a trip over to the Ballard Locks to see the migrating salmon moving through the steps:

A couple years ago I went backpacking to capture the alpine larches in their autumn colors here in the North Cascades. Spent some time revisiting an image from that set that I liked but could never quite get the "right" feel for in post processing:

Another image from the (somewhat dreary) tail end of my trip, at Cape Disappointment State Park on the Washington side:
