Paria Canyon-Vermillion Cliffs Wilderness

I will be attending WPPI end of February and planning a trip to Paria Canyon-Vermillion Cliffs Wilderness, the Wave, and am familiar with the BLM access requirements.
I have been to the general area several times over the last several years during late winter/early spring so heat should not be an issue although shorter daylight and the possibility of ice are my concerns sitting here in Pennsylvania.
Has anyone been here who can offer suggestions or tips.

Yes I know about the permit process and have contacted BLM. They say I should have a good shot considering the time of year I will be in the area. I have twice been to Bryce and Zion as well as Kodachrome Basin, Coral Pink Sand Dunes.

My concern is the snow. I typically am in Las Vegas during winter trade show season and I usually tack on 4-7days (my company is tied to the construction industry so our trade shows are generally during down time) The first three years I lucked out weather wise as it was generally warm and dry for the time of year. Lately things are more normal, colder with snow covered trails. Got snowed out of Cedar Breaks last year and the trails at Bryce were ice crusted and knee deep. Since I am often alone I pay close attention to weather and prefer good trail conditions.

EyeSpy
I have seen Valley of Fire on a map went to the web site and it looks interesting as well as very close.
Thanks for the confirmation.

I have been to the Pinnacles at Trona and I will check out your other tips

I will be in Las Vegas the end of February and will have 3 or 4 days to explore and shoot.
Trying to decide between Paria Canyon "the Wave" or Death Valley both of which are within a reasonable driving distance. I have been to the the southwest 9 times in the last 5 years after various trade show trips to Vegas and have a fairly good idea of what to expect weather wise.

Has anyone been to either and can offer advice ?

We seem to want the same outcome but disagree on the manner in which to achieve the goal. Government is the necessary evil and a small limited government is best. What is the old addage... the government that governs best is the one that governs least. Our constitution provides for equal opportunity to all not an equal outcome to all. It also limits the federal government to keeping the courts running, providing for national defense and maintaining interstate commerce. But over the years it has crept into areas never intended.
Much of the social responsibilities you mention are much better handeled at a local level either through private or religious agencies and possibly local governments. These folks are much closer to the problems and are better able to use resourses more efficiently. But most importantly they know the individuals they are dealing with and have a much more personal interaction this is not the one you typically get from a removed bureaucrat.
Human nature being what it is ...if you place large amounts of public money out there people will find many ways to take advantage. Think global...act local.

Have to go. It is our Thanksgiving Day and I must drive to (gulp) Washington DC to visit relatives.

Nice chatting with you
Robert

Obama was the blank slate on which anyone could project their hopes and dreams. Before him Bush was the "compassionate conservative" who proved to be neither. I would much rather depend on myself and my friends for to secure a better life. At one time most Americans and our media had a healthy skepticism of government and that helped to keep it's power in check but now to many look to Washington to secure the future while the media often called the 4th estate is acting more like a 5th column. McCain was not my choice and he is year or two older than Reagan when he was elected. I vote for positions and issues and not for personalities which is why I supported Ron Paul libertarianism, he however was not an effective campaigner.

Enjoy,
Robert

OK another American chimes in.
After the longest campaign (2 years) and with little real debate of the issues or merits of the candidates it is sad to say that most US voters are some of the most uninformed people anywhere and I am glad it is over. I am amazed at how many people were taken in by the media dribble, puff pieces on Obama and hit pieces on McCain. Most people I spoke to about the candidates could not explain why they supported Obama, the usual response being "he is not Bush". This entire campaign was eerily focused on a singular personality, a media creature. Barrack seams to me to not have supporters as much as followers. It is almost cult-like...the constant mantra of change and yes we can, the mass stadium rallies, the logo, the soviet styled political posters, the videos of cute little children singing the praises of Obama, the "temple of gloom" at the convention and his solo (no family, or running mate on stage with him) acceptance speech on election night.
So much hope invested in one man I can't help but think that someone who from out of nowhere has risen this far this fast may crash and burn and bring down many very disappointed people with him.

This fountain was recently reconditioned and permanently lighted from 3 sides. The air that evening was very humid and added to the atmosphere.

Sorry to hear this Ed

My wife was cut this past May from the financial sector and I have survived 2 rounds of layoffs, but really do not know how long my company, which is tied to residential construction can carry on. I am prepared for the worst hoping for the best.

Maybe the new administration will enact a WPA type program hiring photographers to document how well our congressmen and the Wall Streeters are doing on our dime.

This year is the 250th anniversary of the city of Pittsburgh and many events marked this milestone. One such event the "Pittsburgh 250 Festival of Lights" under the direction of Lucette de Rugy of Artlumiere, international designers transform building facades into stunning works of art. Friedrich Forster and Sabine Weissinger (aka CASA MAGICA) lighted the Cathedral of Learning on the University of Pittsburgh campus, the second tallest educational building in the world.

It was this "Festival of Lights" that got me interested in night photography.

the following images were shot this November and culminated with "Light Up Night" the traditional start of the holiday season in Pittsburgh.

Time Lapse Photo Set Up

I have been asked to come up with a time lapse photo set up to photograph a construction project that will take 4-6 weeks. Since this is a corporate environment I have been given next to no advance warning and not much of a budget. The project is scheduled to begin next Monday, July 28. I have been doing some cursory reading but so far have not been able to find a good resource for suggesting a camera/intervalometer configuration. I found a company called Harbortronics that offers a turn key system complete with a Pentax K110, housing, solar panel, battery pack for $2300 but I was told this isn't in the budget. I was able to find a company in Toronto that supplies a device called Pclix but have not been able to contact them via phone. Does any one have any suggestions or experience in this area ????

...I was required to purchase a 35mm camera for my graphic design major in college and this was in the early 70's, way before anyone knew what "graphic design" was.

I bought a Mamiya Sekor 528 fixed lens camera to get me through the course requirement because it was inexpensive but found I really loved shooting and equally darkroom work. The Mamiya was fortunately stolen and I needed to get a new 35mm.

I very much coveted the Nikon F1 but it was out of my price range. I went to the local camera store and looked at all of the options, remember the Cosina, Contax, Konica, Miranda, Minolta, Praktika, Richo, and Yashica but settled on the Canon FTb and the Honeywell Pentax Spotmatic. The Pentax won for its size (my hands were not very large) its quality and the quality of the lenses, and its metering.

The Spotmatic served me for years until I moved to the K1000 (not a fan of the screw mount lens) and I never regreted the purchase. When the digital age finally dawned I again looked at Canon (maybe the finest digital camera available) and the Pentax *istDL and again went with what brung me plus I had three compatible lenses. I have since moved to the K10 and now the K20 and look toward the FF Pentax in several years?

Little Laker also recommended the DP1. I looked at the Sigma site and it seems like a very high quality P&S. It appears to be a little larger than most, it has attachments, view finder and lens hood and it is rather pricey. I'd rather not to be bothered with attachments. One compact quality shooting box with a range finder is what I am after.

I also prefer a dslr to a compact but isn't it really about the shot? When I'm cycling I don't want to be encumbered with stuff and I'm usually with others who don't necessarily have the patience while I set up and wait for the shot. I'll have to check out the Sigma DP1.
Mike is right I ride for enjoyment or exercise or to clear my head, if I see a shot it would be nice to have a P&S to capture what I'm seeing at that moment.

Thanks, that shot is a 15 image, 300 degree, 820 MB pano of Skyline Arch.
Yes I ate at the Moab Brewery 3 days in a row the CHICKEN ALMOND SALAD with Grilled chicken, celery, roma tomatoes and mixed greens topped with Ginger Vinaigrette and toasted almonds chased with either a Lizard Ale, Dead Horse and yes I tried the Derailleur Ale, was a nice late lunch or early dinner before heading back to Arches to photograph during the evening golden hour.

Nice color! I've only shot one bald eagle, was a very hot hazy day and had to hand hold an *ist d at 300mm no anti shake, the shot way pretty much crap. Got some good gator shots while cycling in Florida.

I have been managing one or two trips a year to the southwest. Latest trip was to the Moab area Arches & Canyonlands Nat'l Parks. Along with hiking and shooting with my new K20D I did some biking but the K20 was to much to haul. I am thinking about getting the Canon G9, anyone have an opinion?
Oh... some shots from the trip. I did lot of pano shooting and Photoshop stitching.

Tried out my new K20D on a recent trip to the Moab area (mountain bike mecca). To bad the K20 is to much camera to haul on a bike. I need a small point & shoot the Canon G9 looks like a rugged full featured answer. Does anyone have an opinion or other option?

Nice series, I just love artificial light at night, The diner is a throw back to the 1950s.
I owned a Mamiya Sekor in the early 70s and have a lot of fondness for that camera.

Having not seen the original color it is hard to comment. I would like to see much more gray tones especially in the first image. If you are not familiar with Ansel Adams "zone system" it is a very worth while study. You made me recall how much I loved shooting and processing B&W film back in the 70s. Lightroom looks like a worth while investment.

This is a magnificent photo. I like the contrast between the blank blue sky and the elongated shadows and texture of the foreground. Did you do much post processing?
