Sigma 100-300 autofocus problem

This is now a very old thread but I've decided to add to it not because anything I say will contribute materially to the discussion but, rather, to offer some praise where praise is due.

I own a "first version" copy of this lens and it exhibits the the somewhat bizarre focussing issue described well by mherger. If the aperture selected is f7 our above it nails pdaf focus every time. If it is set below that, focus will never be achieved. Note that it is possible to select an aperture smaller than 7, lock focus, select a wider aperture, and take a perfect shot ( while using back button focus) - but that is of course clumsy.

Back to the point, I think I would probably still be scratching my head about this behavior without the explanation that I found on this forum. Encouraged by mherger's success at having his lens repaired I contacted the local agent (NZ) about the possibility of a fix. They suggested that, for NZ$75 plus courier each way, they would take a look at the lens.

Forewarned by all the helpful discussion here, I was able to point them to this thread and suggested that, before I risked the lens to a courier, they might like to check with Japan to see if a fix was available. After checking with Japan they informed me that no repair was possible.

Undaunted I contacted mherger , who promptly replied to my questions. Since his dealer HAD managed to fix his lens I emailed them. I received a prompt and polite reply from Michèle Kückens at OWY informing more that they could only handle repairs from within Switzerland.

I wrote back explaining why they had received an enquiry from the far side of the world and thanking them for their response. There I expected the master to rest, however this morning I received another email from OWY. In that email, Michèle apologised for the delayed response and explained that OWY had searched for a fix but that a copy of the firmware was no longer available.

So here's the point. Without this forum I would never have completely understood the problem. Without mherger's prompt reply I would not have known of a company with potential fix. Without the exceptional service from OWY I would have been considerably less happy with the unsuccessful outcome which I have finally accepted.

So praise where it is due and thanks to all along the way.

Alternative choice for Ricoh Image Sync App - Pentax Photo Sync

Hmm... Power output is unlikely to be the problem. Radiated power follows the inverse square rule. Getting close to the camera will easily make it the most powerful Wi-Fi source at any location.

The developer (OP) claims to have doubled the transfer speed. That should suggest that the problem isn't a hardware constraint. My software claims that the max connection speed (theoretical) is 65Mbs, so about 8 MBs. Transfer rates I'm seeing are about one twentieth of that. Thus my question.

Very useful in many, many places. Shooting over the crowd at weddings, through the weeds landscapes, you name the occasion and the screen steps up to the mark. Can't think of a downside to it.

Do Batteries make a difference? Maybe...

The k-1 is not an "electronic device", it is a combination of many parts - a lot of them electromechanical.

A batteries internal resistance determines how much current it can supply, instantaneously, no matter what the charge state. It might help to imagine this:

Short out an aa battery with a very thick wire. Let's say the wire has a resistance of a few micro ohms, the battery is charged to 1.5V, ohms law would tell us that several hundred amps will flow. Luckily for the fingers we used to hold the wire they won't. Why not? We neglected to enter the internal resistance of three battery into the equation.

Where very high loads are present, the internal resistance of the battery is the limiting factor - always. The comparison with a starter motor is fair. Granted, the starter motor is huge in comparison to the af motor or the actuators for the mirror and shutter, but then an auto battery is huge in comparison to a camera battery. The point is that the underlying principles are the same.

The argument that we shouldn't be trying to push the camera beyond its design limits seems to me to be spurious. Given that the 3rd party battery has the same voltage as the original, then what we are imagining is the able to maintain that voltage better. The device will simply be able maintain its ability to at its best even while being asked to do several things at once.

It may help you consider this, do you worry about blowing up your flash because you plug in an auxiliary battery pack? No you don't. You have simply provided it with a battery with a lower internal resistance that will cut recharge times dramatically.

Well done to the OP, even if you imagined the effect you have started an interesting discussion!

Actually, imho, batteries can make a very large difference. But I have no idea if they do in this case. "Batteries" have an internal resistance. As current increases the voltage that appears across the poles decreases, the higher the internal resistance, the greater the voltage drop. That's why banging that bigger battery in your car may well make the starter spin faster.

While lower internal resistance is not directly related to larger capacity, it often follows. So when load on the battery gets high, shutter activation, focus shift, flash charging, it is perfectly possible that a larger capacity battery MAY provide a higher voltage.

Before anyone shoots me, I make no claim to know if that is actually happening in this case. I also make no judgment on the actual capacity of the batteries mentioned as opposed to their rated capacity.

Actually there is an easy way, if you have the right gear. I use the rig I have for for taking panoramas to invert the camera. No need for long legs or an inverted tripod center section plus it already has very precise level adjustment built in.

Choice of flash?

Agreed, but it is a significant point of difference between a Metz and another, non upgradeable brand. I would also be hesitant to assume that, just because a flash has a port that allows upgrading, the manufacturer will in fact create new firmware. As you rightly say, Metz are often playing catch up - but that is far better than leaving their product permanently crippled when a new generation of bodies is released.

Choice of flash?

Some very good advice already but here is my two cents worth. I've got a 58 AF-1 and a 58 AF-2, both good flashes - and both with very cumbersome menu systems. At least, as has been mentioned, they are both firmware upgradeable. Not so my two Cactus AF50's. I wasn't surprised when the cactus flashes didn't work in p-ttl on the K-1, but I was surprised to find that they would not work in off camera p-ttl slave mode. Lesson learned.

As others have mentioned, the Godox V850's are a really great manual alternative. Super long lasting batteries for events and easy setup with the remote triggers. To be honest, I've never been impressed with P-TTL, yes, including genuine pentax units. Careful manual setup is almost always better. Of course a TTL system may well suit the work the OP is doing better than a manual or auto non TTL system.

Can anyone give a definitive answer as to the exact capability of the new Yn585ex?

I actually like the way the 12-24 performs on the K-1 (although @ 18 the corners may be just a little too soft) when locked to full frame. Sure, you wouldn't use it where edge to edge performance is required but it works well otherwise.

Why isn't the Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG HSM More Popular with Pentaxians?

Superb lens. Pretty much lives on my k3. I have many 35's. It is large (and heavy) for a 35mm prime, but I really don't care. It is pin sharp, focuses as reliably as any other lens I own and the dock allows me a degree of focus compensation not possible with anything but an art lens.

It handles well, is perfectly balanced on the k3 and has proven very robust. If it was weather sealed I'd marry the damned thing!

Cruise to New Zealand - what to take????

Hmmmm...... It may well be that I'm not the best person to answer this! I tend to take, and use, everything, including the kitchen sink when I travel. That said, maybe I can point out a few things that might be useful for you.

As had already been mentioned, the lenses you need will very much depend on the images you want to capture, but I'm going to take a stab using the sort of thing I see cruise ship visitors doing here as a guide.

First thing to note is the quality of the light. The latitude (I'm at 45 Sth) and the climate mean that high levels of UV are present, it's quite possible to get sunburned on a very cloudy day. For you SPF 50+ sunscreen, for your favourite landscape lens a very good CPL filter.

Likewise, if you have gone to a lot of trouble to create some custom white balance settings for your gear, I'd verify them before use.

Your ship will almost certainly go to Fiordland, and when it does, you will almost certainly end up at Milford or Doubtful Sound. When you do, you will probably wish that you brought something pretty wide. Think 12-24 ish. However, when you see a Fiordland Crested Penguin 45 seconds later, you will be thinking about that long Sigma zoom you left at home!

Our most interesting birds are forest dwellers, and small, but a few kilometres from here is the only mainland albatross colony in the world. Those suckers have a 2m wing span. So that would be a lens for tiny subjects in dark spaces and one for large subjects in bright sunlight.

Not very helpful I know. I guess what I'm trying to say is "cover all your bases". Even if that means ditching your favourite primes in favor of a wide ranging zoom.

There are photo opportunities in every direction here. You're going to have a great time. The people are friendly and as honest as you can expect to find. With 15 hours of daylight right now you run the risk of wearing out you shutter finger!

PM me if your trip is stopping in Port Chalmers.

Maybe using the 645 lens system and Sr to create a larger than 36mp image or creating what is effectively a soft lens using SR? Sounds kind of plausible.
