For the KP you can use the camera settings menu 5 -> Button Customization -> AF/AE-L button -> AF2 Enable AF2
Description: "AF with shutter release button is disabled so AF is performed with AF/AE-L button". With this settings the camera will focus when the AF/AE-L button is pressed. After releasing this button the focus setting will remain unchanged until the button is pressed again.

I also use RawTherapee for converting the raw files. It does a good job and has some basic editing features too.

For more than basic editing I suggest Picture Window 8. It is free but hey have a suggested donation of 25$. I find it very good. There is a learning curve because it uses a different approach from Photoshop. The documentation is good and they have a user forum where you get quick answers to questions from the developer and from users.

You might consider also some software for organizing and finding your images. I use IMatch which is a commercial product.

Used the 20-40 on a vacation shortly after I bought it and after I upgraded my K-7 to a KP. Zoomed to 40mm, 1/320 sec, f5.6, ISO 800.
