Okay, I get black and white, but what exactly qualifies as a portraiture?
Thanks. I'm new.

Lainey -- That is a striking picture! I like it better in black and white. Very compelling!
I'm new here -- new to my camera, new to the forum. Is it kosher for us newbies to post comments here?

Reportage -- I would LOVE it, but I won't make it to these games. My husband will go and take the pics. I will tell him though. They will be in Galena Park and Klein. If my daughter's team does well enough to stay in the tournament until Saturday, I might go to Saturday's Galena Park game. I will get the times and locations.

Read your invitation, Iris, for Picture of the Week in the Welcome Section, so I went and took a picture to join in.

Okay. Monopod is on our shopping list. I haven't done anything at all with Raw yet, but am eager to fiddle with that.
I checked the ISO on some of our other shots Dan, and same story -- all pretty low. We will experiment with that. Thanks for the tip.
My son and my daughter each have a soccer tournament this week. We ordered the Pentax lens this evening, so it should be here in time for the games. If we get some decent pics, I will show you all, and you can be proud for all the help you are giving us newbies. :) Thanks so much!

Thanks for your help and tips.
Amazing epqwerty that you could get all that information, and of course I don't mind.
My husband went to a couple more soccer games and tried the lens some more. Last half of the final game and the shots weren't bad. You guys might be right... possible he was rushing the shot. You were definately right about the pictures looking better as the focal length decreases from the 300. Glad to know that's normal.
I checked out your photos Dan. Good soccer shots -- the kind we want to get with our kids. But most amazing was your Beach 12. Oh my!! How beautiful!! My husband likes shooting the soccer more. I like the nature shots. You have some awesome photos!
I think my husband wants to return this lense and go with the Pentax.
I sure appreciate your help!

Hi. I would appreciate your advice. We have a K-7 and want to get a lens to take pictures of our kids during high school soccer games -- mostly night games with normal high school stadium lights, but also day games.
We were looking at the Pentax DA 55-300mm f/4-5.8 ED Lens for Pentax and Samsung Dgtal SLR Cameras on Amazon for $349.95 (no tax or shipping). There is a Wolfe camera store down the freeway, and they say they will match any price, so I checked there. They cannot get the lens, but had a "comparable" lens packaged under the name Quantaray but made by Sigma -- 70-300mm F4-5.6 Zoom (for Pentax AF 25-166-6111). They have a 10 day full refund policy so customers can, in essence, try the lens out. Oh, and it was on sale for $149, down from $200. My husband got it yesterday and so far the pictures look too hazy, especially at 300. They are not crisp and clean.
One more consideration, though, is that we are newbies and maybe it's a skill problem and not a lens problem.
Somewhere on this site, I believe, I saw a water skiing pic, and it was awesome! Once we get better at the camera, we want to be able to take awesome soccer action shots.
We will learn and get good at this. So we want a lens that will allow us those nice shots. Any advice specific to these two lenses? Or is there another lens that would serve us better?
Thanks for any help you can offer.

Thank you all for your kind welcome!
I checked out the link, Nass. Wonderful! I appreciate that and will peruse it further.
And Ash... you're not going to believe this! I have purchased one book to get me started and it just so happens it is Peterson's book that you recommended. I ordered it through amazon.com and it just came. I haven't delved in yet, but soon will. How happy I am with your recommendation!
I am thankful for this forum! Wish you all the very best!

Hello from Houston. Thank you for having me on this forum.
I love taking pictures, and have been using a smal digital camera for years. We just bought a Pentax K-7, and I am learning to use it. I primarily like to take pics of sunsets, nature, flowers, kids, grandkids, and high school soccer games.
I welcome advice because I am just starting out. If anyone knows of a good book or website to help me learn the basics, I'm all ears. I'm having a good time just messing around with it so far. Funny how quickly I can get five or six hundred pics on the camera. :)
Happy shooting everybody!
