1.7 AF adapter + 6x7 tele lens?

Littledrawe, you are in luck. I mounted a generic P67 to PK adapter to P67 SMC Takumar 300/4.0 and the AFA 1.7x to my K20D (I have no doubt the genuine Pentax P67 to P645 + p645 to PK adapter would work just as well, but they are buried deep in my Medium format bag). Set the camera to AF.s, manually focus the camera and half press the shutter and AF works quite well. Any subject within the same vicinity (+,- 50 feet) the AF works. Mind you it's very bright outside, in less than ideal conditions AFA 1.7x and an f4.0 lens do not work so well. I haven't checked the IQ but I've had good results with AFA 1.7x and other 300mm lenses.

I can also confirm that an m42 lens with an infinity type adapter will not AF with the AFA 1.7x, however with a non-infinity type adapter (chrome plated) the AF functions as well as the P67 lens. I haven't tried it with the black anodized non-infinity adapter - will try to do so later on.

Hope this helps,

70-300mm: Sigma -vs- Tamron

Pentax 55-300 is almost always twice as expensive as Tamron 70-300, new and used. Anyone that thinks spending twice as much for Pentax over Tamron or Sigma as 'just a little more' is ruddy more loaded than thee or me! If spending twice as much on a lens gives a definitive and quantitative edge in performance in the order of 10% or so, I would say go for it. But it does not. In terms of resolution both lenses' performance is about the same. On a budget, get a Tamron. Not on a budget but just want to dabble with long lens, get a Tamron and save your money. Not on a budget and want to seriously pursue long focal length photography, get a Tamron 60B or the Pentax *series telephoto lens.

Thanks,

Extension tubes and catch-in-focus

It's an el cheapo generic set of extension tubes, just scrape off the black coating and be done with it. Each time you mount and dismount the tubes from your body, you are going to leave behind minute amounts of adhesive residue on the mount which may cause more problems later. It's not like you are trying to preserve a $200.00+ set of extension tubes in it's original glory.

Articulating back LCD

Hmm, I guess from your POV this is a disadvantage. Personally, I think this type of articulating screens have great advantage over the tilt only or even the very innovative articulating screen found on the K-1. Vast majority of my shots on my Panasonic G2 was through the EVF but there were few instances where the type of articulating LCD found on the KS-2 and the K-70 was absolutely essential - when the shooter cannot be behind the camera.

A few years back, I was at a public garden (greenhouse)trying to shoot macro of tropical plants. The subject flower was behind another plant and in order to fill the frame with the flower, the camera needed to be placed in between the two plants. The greenhouse had just been misted, creating that steamy tropical jungle look and feel. I mounted the G2 on my tripod with the articulating screen sitting more or less parallel to the optical axis, I stood beside the camera while moving the tripod back and forth to get the magnification I wanted, then used the gearing on my Manfrotto 410 geared head to compose. I did fool around with the articulating LCD before but this truly was the first time to really take advantage of the articulating screen.

I am not knocking the K-1's articulating LCD, indeed I hope it is featured on the next flagship APS-C, Pentax DSLR but the type of articulation found on my G2 or the KS-2 and the K-70, has some distinct advantages as well.

Macro Lens or Extension Tubes for the lenses I already own?

Why are people chiming in with your 135 format lens' experiences in the Pentax Medium Format thread, they are all great lenses but inapplicable to a Pentax 645 camera.

@littledrawe: Pick up a Pentax-A 645 120/4.0 Macro or FA 120/4.0 (harder to find and more expensive) for 1:1 macro capability. I've used my A645 120/4.0 with my K-5 and while it's heavy (a lot heavier than 135 format macro lenses) it's really nice to shoot with, with it's long focus throw and the silky smooth focus action. As for the weight, it balances quite well even with my K-5 and I don't really notice the weight while shooting, it's only when I pick up the camera with the right hand the extra weight becomes very apparent.

That loud "snick-snick" shutter sound from the K10D, I definitely did not miss that.:) I tried to sell my K10D about 3 years ago in the local CL - didn't even get a nibble at 150.00 Cad, that I decided to convert it to IR and kept it. Visiting the K10D club off and on when I log into the Forums got me thinking; if I can score a pristine, gently used one with a very low mileage (like my K10D IR) at a low price, I'd grab it - so I grabbed it! Some pictures from a local garden on my home from making the purchase:

The only thing I can think of is that maybe the aperture actuating lever on the DA 40/2.8 XS is slightly bent and while your K-01 can still catch the lever to actuate the diaphragm while the K-5IIs cannot. I admit it's a long shot but try comparing the aperture actuating lever on your lenses and see if they are identical or not.

I don't get it. You sell off all of your Pentax gear just so you can start over again in acquiring Pentax gear? What's the point, I predict that you will eventually end up re-acquiring much of the stuff you managed to sell off this time around.

Here is a most traditional metal toolbox which fit your dimension requirements: https://www.homedepot.ca/en/home/p.26--inch-hand-box.1000653650.html Modern plastic toolboxes are good as well but the dimensions given are not always reliable - the overall dimensions may be more than 2inch wider than the interior dimensions and I find the most plastic toolboxes are weaker around the handle, hinges and snap locks.

Yes to both. Focus Peaking doesn't need to communicate with the lens, I don't have K-3II but FP works on my Q and Panasonic G6 with non-native lenses very well.

I NEED a faster lens!

Well, if that's your ISO threshold, then that's your threshold. Personally, I think you can shoot at higher ISO than that and PP the image to an acceptable degree afterwards. I unloaded my K20D long before I thought I got my money's worth out of it because I was so impressed with the K-5's high ISO capabilities. Your K-50 should have as good as or better higher ISO capability than my K-5. Search the forums for high ISO images and see whether increasing your ISO threshold would help you or not. If you think faster lenses will help then by all means go for it.

Here is a generic eBay macro extension tube that has been extended even further using 1 1/2 inch ABS drain pipe and straight ABS couplings. There is no way to explain the build process within the constraints of this thread (5 sentences, 1 picture) - so briefly: I made them in 2 sections so that I can use either 1 by itself or 1+2 together. 1 and 2 are held together by friction alone, the two parts need considerable strength with a twisting motion to either join together or pull apart, such that there is virtually no chance of them coming apart accidentally. 1 by itself with the FA 50/1.4, gives me about 2.5:1 magnification and 1+2 with the same lens gives me about 4:1 magnification - of course, the working distance is very minimal at those magnifications.

If there are sufficient number of PF members interested in this inexpensive, extreme macro tube, I'll make another set with more pictures when the next eBay extension tube arrive and post in the appropriate sub-forum elsewhere.:)

Manual focus - Focusing screen

Replacement focus screens has never been a high demand accessory item for any camera manufacturer. Replacement screens were usually only available for the high end, flagship models in the film era. Pentax makes and sells focus screens (for my K-5 and the K10D, 4 and 3 respectively), albeit for AF use. It wouldn't take much for them to go through their film era split prism focus screens and find the most accurate and the brightest of the lot and make it available for the DSLR market with a caveat emptor, warning about the possible inconsistencies in metering with the split prism screen.

Pentax knows that their user base is heavily invested into legacy lenses - as evidenced by the soon to be released FF Pentax DSLR with only 2 new FF lenses - it would bode well for Pentax to release oem split-prism focus screens at prices comparable to the replacement AF screens. The focus screens whether AF or MF will never make Pentax rich but releasing split-prism focus screens will show that Pentax knows and are willing to cater to their MF lens user base.

I don't know how to make polls but if someone savvy enough to do so would make a poll about whether PF members would buy (or not) an oem split-prism screen for their Pentax DSLR, even knowing about the exposure shortcomings, at prices comparable to the existing AF focus screens, I am sure there would be a very favourable response. I know I would!

vivitar macro focusing x2 teleconverter advice

I have the Ricoh Macro Converter x2 and the dreaded pin is not dreadful at all. It mounts and dismounts on my K-5 without any problem. Unfortunate thing about the Ricoh Converter that I have is not a KA but only KM, thus can only be used in M mode with the Green Button to meter. If you can find a converter with the KA mount (any that show up in the marketplace usually sells in moments), it will be a lot more convenient to use than the KM version. In the end, the 2x Macro converter is more of a novelty (at least for me) than a real macro equipment. Losing 2 stops of exposure makes for a very dim image in the viewfinder. If you browse the marketplace, MF 1:2 macro lenses are often found for under $100. Coupling a good quality achromatic filter to the front of the 1:2 macro lens may be the better option than waiting for a KA 2x Macro converter to show up.

Lens sales queries

Requesting sample shots of the item is a legitimate request, imho. As the saying goes "a picture tells a thousand words", a good set of pictures can show the buyer what to expect of the prospective purchase and may prevent future misunderstandings from occurring.

If I as a buyer ask you for sample pictures, do you believe that I am doubting your integrity as a seller - it cuts both ways this question of integrity - a set of pictures of the item will quickly clear up any misconception about the item.

Another point about pictures, one seller's "like new" may be another's "excellent or very good". Descriptions are highly subjective as evidenced by reading the equipment reviews posted by PF members. A set of pictures will go a long way to remove such subjective bias.

As you've mentioned before there are recourse available in case of real problems but I'd rather not deal with that scenario by doing the due diligence beforehand, and that is to ask for some unretouched pictures before committing to buy. As a seller, I would automatically provide pictures so that I do not have to deal with the hassle of reversing the purchase - a huge waste of time and money - which could be prevented by taking 5 to 10 minutes to take some pictures of the item for sale.

PM - Private Message, why should I announce to forum members at large that I am expressing an intent to buy? Whether the deal is consummated or falls through should remain private. The only reason for posting a "PM Sent" is to bump the OP's thread to the top and it may not be in my best interest to bump the thread to the top. If my decision to maintain anonymity by refraining from posting "PM sent" in the thread affects my place in line in the Seller's PM box, so be it.

Anyone consider two Pentax Pk-Q adapters?

You will need an OM mount TC to donate the body mount, remove the body mount from the OM TC, measure the thickness of the donor mount. Remove the K mount from the Pentax Oem K to Q adapter, measure the thickness of the mount. PK mount's register distance is 45.46mm while OM mount's register distance is 46mm, a difference of 0.44mm. The Pentax K to Q adapter will need extra shims added underneath the OM body mount for a net increase of 0.44mm, depending on the difference between the two body mount's thickness. If the PK body mount is thicker, the thickness of shims needed will be less than 0.44mm and visa versa.

You will also need to drill new screw holes on the OM mount to conform to the PK mount and may need longer mounting screws to accommodate the increase in the thickness of the mount. I successfully converted a Bushnell 400/6.3 Nikon F mount to K mount as a prelude to converting a Nikon 180/2.8 ED lens following the method described above before I managed to acquire a Tamron Adaptall-2 SP 63B, 180/2.5.

It's an M type lens. You will need to shoot in M mode on your K-5, press the green button to meter. I am assuming that you have the K-5 set to permit the use of aperture ring (should be the default setting, not the other way around).
