Not understanding comments about Pentax

I thought the video was good. Seems like he did his research and didn't talk for the sake of it without reason. Bottom line is it is his opinion.

It didn't seem like 'product bashing' to me, but that my opinion. Lots of opinions here on the prosecution side too in this thread. I respect that.

I like the fact the author came on here to try to defend his video, seeing someone thought it was cool to share it on this thread and certain comments were made to which clearly he picked up on. It seems a shame too that it seems he has been locked out, from what I understand, of adding further comments to defend himself on this thread. If true, then that is a shame.

If people haven't seen the video I suggest you do. I also think if you have not had the experience with the hardware mentioned and where comparisons were made then perhaps an open opinion is preferred.

Film Simulation for JPEG images ... Fuji / Kodak on Pentax DSLR.

I've seen threads on here about Film Simulation. Not many. A few recipes have been offered on this forum, 5 or 6 maybe, and I know you cannot apply all those recipes to Pentax DSLR - except maybe on just the flagship models, due to limitations in the individual software engines.

Fuji seem to offer quite a few recipes for their cameras based on older Fuji film stock. Example:

Classic Chrome
Dynamic Range: DR400
Highlight: -1
Shadow: +2
Color: -2
Sharpening: +2
Noise Reduction: -4
Grain: Strong
Color Chrome Effect: Off
White Balance: 6300K, -1 Red & -4 Blue
ISO: Auto up to ISO 6400
Exposure Compensation: +2/3 to + 1-1/3 (typically)

Of course, these were written for the Fuji range of cameras. How can we decipher their terminology (above) to satisfy our purpose and our cameras? I'm using a K3-iii.

Purpose: This is for creating quick JPEG images processed in camera (SooC). I know I can do all of this PP. I don't want too. I want something quick and ready and where, if I needed to do tweaks in PP, then they are minimal tweaks.

Can anyone make sense of all of this Fuji recipe (above) to enable to transpose this recipe to Pentax?

Thanks in advance.

Histogram display in liveview?

Agreed... was scratching my head as to why I could not view the Histogram Live while in Live View. Box was 'Greyed Out' so could not activate it. I had to turn off the 'Focus Peaking (AF with Live View) to be able to view the Histogram. It's not clever you can't use both. I've flagged this with Pentax as I don't know why you can't use both. Useful if focusing manually.

SMC Coating remedy...

I had a very basic look and did a quick clean of the front element as accessible. Those marks look like minor scratches to the coating. Initial imaging didn't show any major issues to photo's taken but i am sure on a sunny day or other they may effect imaging. Tbh... It doesn't seem like a massive deal. More concerning is the mild amount of fungus on glass but that isn't too difficult to clean up once stripped.

I know the coating is their to assist light transmission and stop flaring etc... If one was to remove the coating could one not use a protective filter? (Probably a dumb question and idea)? Could it not be polished off with automotive glass polish? Or... best left alone?

Hello all,

I picked up an old Pentax-A 35-105mm f3.5 on eBay sold as spares/repair. Mechanically it is sound and there are signs of fungus. It will need a strip and clean. No big issue. However, I note the front lens has had some marks on it like there the SMC coating has rubbed/scratched off. Testing the lens there does not seem to be any major imaging issues/problems, and just needs a bit of TLC. Is there anything I can do about the marks on the front lens? Repair/rectify? See attached images.

Thanks in advance for suggestions.

It is quite a nice lens this, so would be good to try and salvage it. For £14.00 I can't moan too much.

SD Card Annoyance... Is there a way around this?

Seems like the only option, at the moment.

I am thinking this is not something that is impossible to resolve. If you use the cards sequentially (where you set the camera to write files, both RAW+JPEG to one SD card, then the camera switches to card 2 when full) or you can store separate file formats (Default: Slot 1 = RAW and Slot 2 = JPEG), then I cannot see this any reason this is not a potential software upgrade (Firmware) to be able switch the Default option when storing separate file formats (Slot 1 = JPEG and Slot 2 = RAW). It is a software issue, unless someone can definitively say why it cannot be done other than say it simply can't. Where can I direct this request with Pentax?

I've noted quite a few people chipping into this thread referring to the K1 and older K3 and quoting what their cameras can do. Those cameras have two slots but only handle UHS-I in both slots. Of course, if the K3-iii was like this then I wouldn't be writing this thread as all RAW would be on one card and JPEG on the other. If Pentax designed the K3-ii with two UHS-II slots instead of one UHS-1 and one UHS-2, then, again, I would not be writing this thread, as both slots would be the same speed. What I would like to do is have 'control' on how I use both slots and what files I write to where to suit my needs.

Anyway, if this is something I could suggest with Pentax and see if there is a work-around in a possible future firmware update, who do I approach with this in Pentax?.

Thanks again.

---------- Post added 06-21-2021 at 12:04 PM ----------

Bingo. It's an option but a pain-in-the-butt option. Lol. Glad you see the problem.

---------- Post added 06-21-2021 at 12:30 PM ----------

I've checked the manual (Page 48), but the flexibility is simply not there, as yet. I can do sequential writing, so when card one is full it switches to card two. Action Mode is the only mode I shoot only in JPEG using continuous bursts. On testing, when I write those JPEG files to Slot 1 the camera runs smoothly with no noticeable slowing down of camera with buffer filling up. That's because Slot one is using a UHS-II card. When I do the same test, writing JPEG files to Slot 2, you notice the buffer filling up and camera slowing down. This is because Slot 2 is UHS-I. Ideally, when doing shots like this that all JPEG are shot saving to Slot 1 (UHS-II). This I can do.

When I do normal, single (or bracketed) shots (Urban or Landscape for example), I shoot in dual file format (RAW + JPEG). I have a choice where I send those files:
  1. Use the cards sequentially, so when one card fills up it switches to card two, both both file formats are saved on the same card.

  1. Send the separate files to separate cards. This can only be done with the RAW files going to Slot 1 and JPEG to Slot 2. To be honest, when I shoot those style of shots I am less fussed about the camera being slow or the buffer is filling up.

Of course, when I combine the "Action" Shots with "Normal" Shots then this is when different files types get mixed (RAW + JPEG) in Slot 1. I want to avoid this. I'm happy for RAW to be written on Slot 2 (UHS-II) and JPEG on Slot 1 (UHS-II).

For my situation, it would be ideal to be able to setup the camera to have the flexibility to choose where I send what files to what card. In this case: JPEG to Slot 1 (UHS-II) and RAW to Slot 2 (UHS-I). As you can essentially write both file types to both cards sequentially I cannot see having this option included in one of Pentax future firmware upgrades - unless there is a real and specific reason why this cannot be done?

Your K1 only has UHS-I in both slots, so is nothing like this situation where one slot is UHS-I whilst other is UHS-2 as on the K3-iii.

And the same for the K3-iii (Page 48). But for Action mode I only shoot in JPEG. I find when routed to Slot 2 the buffer fills and camera slows pretty quick. If routed to Slot 1 (UHS-II) it's faster and smoother. Less lag. But I don't want to fill slot one with DNG when I take single shot (non-Action) as the default is RAW goes to Slot 1 and JPEG to 2. It's annoying the ability to route you files as you please isn't available. I don't know why, but almost certain it's something that can be written in the firmware.

---------- Post added 06-20-2021 at 08:09 PM ----------

Not an option I'd like. I'd like my RAW on one SD card and JPEG on the other. I don't want a mix of formats in either card. But I'd like my JPEG in Slot 1 and my RAW in Slot 2. Seems that's not possible.

I'm only shooting JPEG in this instance for Action. No DNG involved - like I said.

The camera has two slots. UHS-II in Slot 1 and UHS-I in Slot 2.

The camera will automatically write all DNG files to Slot 1 and JPEG to Slot 2 if saving in duel mode. What if I want to reverse this? JPEG to Slot 1 and DNG to Slot 2? I seems it cannot be done.

You may ask why would I want to do this?

I would like all my DNG files on one cards and JPEG on the other.

When I shoot Action in burst mode I tend to only shoot in JPEG. If the JPEG were store on the USH-II card the buffer should clear quicker when I go "mad" in burst more. Problem is when I shoot 'normal' single frame images in both DNG and JPEG the camera will write them to Slots 1 and 2. I don't want this, as I want all my JPEG in Slot 1 (on one card) and DNG in Slot 2 (on the other card). I do not want to mix of file formats on the UHS-II card.

Does anyone know if this can be done? Switch DNG to Slot 2 and JPEG to Slot 1?

Thanks in advance.

Mode Dial User Settings (U1, U2 & U3) - Frequently used settings...

Hello Everybody,

The Mode Dial has three factory pre-set settings - CLEAR TONE, HDR LANDSCAPE & ASTROPHOTO (U1, U2 & U3 - of the Dial Mode). You can save your favourite camera settings to U1 to U3 and replace the pre-set settings with them.

If you use the Mode Dial, and have 3 favourite camera setting:
  1. What are they?

  2. What camera settings have you set?

  3. ...and why?

Just a bit of fun. Would be know if people use this feature. :)

Can a lens cause a defect on the memory card???

You are bang on correct!!! Seems like complete coincident SD card failed and has now become unreadable. Ghosting must have been caused by accidently hitting Multiple Exposure (...never used that feature so freaked me out).

Shame I couldn't salvage those images because some of those shots were prize winners!!! OMG... Thank God it ain't the lens. Will have to be aware of this in future.

---------- Post added 05-08-2021 at 06:49 AM ----------

Seems i accidentally hit multiple exposure and the card happens to be defective so will get in touch with SanDisk. Thanks for your help. 👍

All Solved... Hit Multiple Exposure plus a faulty card. Thanks for all your responses. 👍

Can a lens cause a defect on the memory card???

...or is this just coincidental???

I put a new lens on my camera: Pentax DA* 50-135 + Pentax K70. Never used this combo until today to try it out. Then, something weird was happening. Every other image would be previewed like a ghost or two images overlapping. I was cursing thinking it was the lens. So, I went into the cameras 'reset' option in the menu and it starting to behave.

Coming home I put the SD card into my PC and although it opened showing the file I could not retrieve any image - even older images not taken with this lens. Could it be coincidence the memory card used just failed??? The card in question is a SanDisk Ultra 80mb/s U1 10 with 128gb. Maybe it was time I upgraded the memory to something faster???

Any thought?

How To: Convert SDM to ScrewDrive + Video

Well... Having followed the YouTube guide using PK_Teather connected to the K50 I have found the software crashes every time the camera is switched on. So, that's that then.

Question is, we have the two fails available for the K50: DEVELOP.MOD & 00077750.545 - If we cannot access the 'Development Menu' or 'DEBUG MODE' on the K50 using PK_Teather, is there a work around? Putting the files onto the CD card is not enough. There must be a way around this?

Any ideas?

---------- Post added 05-07-2021 at 05:30 AM ----------

Update: Was able to access DEBUG or Development Menu by copying both files onto SD card first and the switching on the K50 with SD card door OPEN. From there I was able to access features in mode. Will now put the 50-135 lens on it and try and copy ROM data from Lens to Card and see if I can progress.

---------- Post added 05-07-2021 at 05:54 AM ----------

Update 2: Although I can access the DEGUB menu on the K50 it seems I am unable to transfer the lens data from the camera to the SD card for editing. Damn...

Any ideas?

Has anybody actually been able to update the lens using this camera?

I have two cameras: K50 & K70. I note the K50 is something you can DEBUG via PK_Teather but not the K70.

I've not done anything yet as the SDM has not failed yet on my 50-135 lens. This is just for my knowing in the future I can effectively manipulate the chip in the lens with the K50 and be able to use the lens in ScrewDrive on both the K50 and K70 if I need to go down this road if the SDM fails.

Any ideas? TIA.

Until then, I'd never used the lens. It was excellent to play with. Had to do all the focusing with LV and a 'hood'. Yeah.. I'm happy with the results and will definitely reuse this lens once I find some good vantage points. Thanks for the complement. :)

First time I ever used it. Bought it on a whim just before Xmas and this was it's first proper outing other than from tests done indoors when I unboxed it. Not done it on architecture yet but will. It behaved perfectly from the go. not too much tinkering with. I think this will be a lens I'll keep in my lens bag when out and about. Never know when I will call upon it. It's a great lens for the tilt, the Shift and the using it as a 24mm prime.
