From page 84 of the manual:
14.2 Reset
The flash unit can be reset to the factory settings when delivered. Press the
Mode button for ca. 5 seconds. After ca. 5 seconds „rES“ (= Reset) is shown in the display and the flash unit is reset to the settings as delivered..
This will not affect the firmware updates for the flash unit. Not sure if this helps with your situation (ie it wont help if you cant even turn it on) - but will hopefully at least be usefull to others.

How about making it affordable?
In Aus the AF540 (the cheapest, the only? pentax flash with twist and tilt) retails at close to $A900. For comparison, a K-x (body) goes for $A650 -
How can a Flash be sooo much more expensive.
It was precisely this expense that kept me from the world of Pentax DSLRs for many years, and it was only after finding a relatively cheap Metz 48 (<$A300) that I jumped in.

I feel your pain. I have the same combination, and was getting similar results.
On page 194 of the manual - footnote number 2 mentions something called "fine sharpness" - Turn it on (and use centre point focus and keep the shutter speeds high) and you will start getting "crisper" results. Note the purists may not like this option - you will see some sharpening artefacts if you really pixel peep.

Thanks all for the responses so far. Perhaps a few more details might clarify my requirements.
Typically, my process is as follows:
1. take a few shots (kids doing something cute again)
2. download said few shots to view on monitor
3. repeat as above until the card is (near) full. Then backup card contents to cd/dvd and reformat card.
The reasons for following the above process are
a. It can take me a month or 2 to fill a card - don't want to wait that long to see the results - and backing up after each partial download can be tedious
b. In case of either hard drive or card failure, I like to ensure there are multiple copies of my images where possible, until backed up.
What Igilligan (Gus) mentions above it what I am aiming to achieve - And I am using XP, but when I attempted this using the standard XP utilities I didn't get that result. Was your camera set up as PTP or MSC? Where there any settings on XP that I should adjust? Which XP utility did you use?
Thanks again.

Previously when using my old C*n*n G3, the supplied download utility allowed me to select just “New” images (those not previously downloaded). Is there such a function when using a k-x with the supplied software? Or is there other software (freeware?) that can provide this?
Thanks in advance
