300mm AF for a KM/K2000

I appreciate the responses, but theyre pretty much what I expected. This camera is like #4 in a line of 5 that I use, and I dont know much about available lenses for it. Problem is, its a nice little camera that she can use pretty much worry free EXCEPT getting good, zoomed shots indoors. I dont mind boosting the ISO on it to get the pics, I can clean them up later, but since I only use this camera for portraits myself its hard to justify a ton of money on a lens for it, for her only. Thanks again, Duane

Hey everyone. I dont post here much, but I read often. Hoping you can help me.

I shoot a KM among other things, and Im looking for an AF 300mm lens for it. I dont need latest and greatest as I wont use the lens much (already have an older MF I use). Its for my wife who isnt a photographer in any sense of the word. She can turn it on and press the shutter button, beyond that shes clueless and doesnt care to learn. She likes to shoot indoor school functions like plays, sports, etc., so Im looking for something that wont break the bank and will be good for what she is doing. Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Removing Ricoh Pin - alternatives

I guess Id rather do it right than half-a**ed. I dont agree with grinding it down with a dremel at all, but hey, to each their own. Even a stripped screw is safer and easier to get out than either finding or buying a dremel and going at your lens with it. There are plenty of tools out there to get stripped screws out, and the hardware store or a jeweler should have the same size screw for a nickel.

By the looks of that screw, Id try a tight-fitting, regular screwdriver. Push and turn HARD. Should come right out, but first, maybe spray some WD-40 on a q-tip and smear the screw head with it to help loosen the threads. Or you could always buy a dremel, a cutting wheel and cut off the pin as flush to the lens as possible, hoping you dont slip and cut the lens.

I mean, Id rather pay a jeweler or someone to remove the screw for me than take a dremel at it, but thats just me.

Adam: OK, flash sync speed, gotcha! And I appreciate you posting that table.

Marc, Ive been using it in M and doing what you suggest with stopping down. Works like a charm, just wasnt really thinking about all this. Lots on my mind lately. I recently lost my dog and I just havent been myself.

Thanks guys, Duane

But four screws are SO EASY to take out. Much easier than buying a dremel or finding someone with one, and grinding it down. Ive take pins out of 5 lenses, it takes like 3 minutes per lens. Very simple.....unless you strip a screw. But even then, take the pins out the correct way, put them in a small baggie and keep them with the lens in case you need/want to put them back in at a later date.

OK, Ive got a stupid question: Ive been using this lens since picking it up off the bay a couple weeks back. AWESOME lens, but I have an issue or two:

When I put it on, the camera wants me to put in the focal lenght. 50mm, no problem, but I can only use the lens in "M" or "AV" mode, and I cant use the flash with it because the lens wont shoot faster than 1/180th with the flash on. If I put it on "M" mode, same thing. If the flash is open, I cant get it over 1/180th when having the camera on f1.7. I cannot understand why, in manual mode, I cannot use the flash with a fast shutter speed. For that matter, I dont understand why in AV mode it wont shoot faster than 1/180th with the flash on either.

Well, stripped screws arent that tough really. Im sure youre freaking out/panicking, but dont worry, you can get it out. Worse comes to worse, you need to take it to a jeweler and pay a small fee.

I just removed a small, stripped screw from a toy yesterday, there are many ways of doing it depending on the severity. First, try a flat head and see if you can get a hold of of edges of the stripped screw. Thats what I did yesterday, came out fine. If that doesnt work try a star bit. It might be able to get a hold of something the phillips and flat head couldnt. If neither of those work, try to cut the head just a bit to get a small flat head in the cut. Ive done this before, works great when all else fails. Take the smallest metal saw you can find and cut down into the head like youre making a new slot for a flat-head screwdriver. When the cut is deep enough, use a screwdriver.

If those methods dont work, take it to a jeweler. They can get most small, stripped screws out easily.

They KEY is using the correct tools in the first place, and having the correct tools on hand in case that fails. If you need to, go to Sears and buy a set of small screwdrivers for like $25 bucks. You can get 5 different flats, 5 different phillips and 4 different stars in a set. Theyll be life savers.

I know its an old thread, but I didnt until I started writing my response, and then I continued in case someone else out there was in the same trouble. It was various forums I found after I got the lens stuck, which helped me in the right direction. Just trying to post some helpful info in general. Duane

Funny, just had this happen to me this morning. Bought a Sears SM 60-300mm (A)P KR and it jammed on. Well, after searching the net I found a few stories about this and being a car guy I have numerous feeler gauge sets, so I went and got the crappiest of the bunch. After a while, I think I actually "sawed" the pin enough to pop it, and I got the lens off. I immediately took the four phillips-head screws out of the back of the lends and popped that little pin out. NO problems now.

A word of warning to others. It was NOT, REPEAT, NOT an easy procedure. 2 sets of hands and about an hour of messing with it. Like I said, I believe I actually cut the pin some (there was an obviously mark in it and a few shards that fell out when I opened it) with my sawing action of the feeler gauge. Im a VERY strong person (been lifting weights just about every day for 18 years) so I think that helped. There was no finessing this thing and I cant honestly believe people were lucky enough to get a feeler gauge in there and just pop the pin down. NOT an easy procedure. But, with the pin out, the lens works fine. CAUTION!!!!!! Duane

Thanks for the information everyone, I really appreciate it. I pulled the trigger on a Asahi Pentax 1.7 50mm today. Hope it was a good purchased, we'll see when I get it. If not, I can always put it on the bay, right.

Now Im looking for a decent zoom. Something in the 300 range. Any opinions? Ive been scoping out the bay but not sure what to go towards and stay away from. I appreciate it.

Hey everyone, new guy here looking for some help.

Ive got a K2000 and Id like a portrait lens for it. I was wondering about a manual SMC 50mm 1.7 or thereabouts. I havent used one in years but it was decent back when I did. I see them on ebay all the time for $50 to $80 bucks and Im wondering if this would be a good, inexpensive lens for my K2000. Anyone have any good/better ideas for an inexpensive portrait lens? Thanks

I know its probably not an ideal camera, but its what Ive got. Id LOVE to get a telescope & mount for it, for some moon and planet shots so Im wondering, is there a decent priced setup I could start out with? Ive never done this but Ive been reading and dreaming for a couple years. Just didnt know if anyone out there had their K2000 set up with a tele or not. Thanks, Duane
