Bumpy gravel road and now my K30 doesn’t work

Okay thanks.

Since I’m shopping for a new camera, I’m looking at the k-s2. It appears to have all the k30 features while also being significantly smaller. Can’t really tell but it appears to be about the size of a k-x. Is there anything the k30 does that the k-s2 doesn’t?

Mpb? What’s that?

If I get another k30 I’ll still have to pay to have the aperture solenoid replaced one day.

I can view all of the images on the card, no problem with that. Removing the memory card has no effect.

One other thing I just noticed. If I turn the camera on and immediately press the shutter button the mirror sequence described above happens, but then the lens focuses all the way out and all the way back in - AFTER the mirror flip. Weird.

Yes I know I should have had the camera on my person and not in the top case on the motorcycle. I figured a mile wouldn’t hurt. I was wrong.

Here’s what happens now. Camera turns on and appears to operate normally. Half pressing the shutter button autofocuses.

With a lens attached, I press the shutter button fully.
The mirror flips up, and the lens aperture actuates and stays stopped down.
At this point the camera becomes almost fully locked up. The screen goes dark (completely off)
The display in the viewfinder still works, but none of the buttons do.
Flipping the power switch causes the mirror to drop.
Turning it back on has no effect. I have to take the battery out and put it back in for the camera to power up again.

With no lens on the camera, same situation:
I press shutter fully
Mirror flips up AND then back down.
Display off and everything else the same.
BUT I can press the shutter button one more time. The mirror goes up into the locked position. The shutter is closed.
Once the battery is removed the shutter moves again slightly.

Alternatively, I turn the camera on and press live view.
The mirror flips up and the shutter opens.
The sensor does its little dance for shake reduction.
The screen goes blank but not off. The lcd is on, but displaying black.
Again none of the buttons work. Powering it off has no effect, it stays in this mode and continues to do shake reduction dance with the screen on.

In either case I have to take the battery out to get it to turn off. It powers back on and is responsive and normal when I view existing photos or use the menus.

Speaking of menus,
Sensor cleaning works normally.
Pixel Mapping hangs at the data processing screen with the progress bar.
Dust removal works normally
Manual white balance crashes the same way as scenarios 1 and 2 as soon as I press the shutter button.
Composition adjust displays the “adjust composition of the image” screen, which freezes. No buttons register. Turning it off leaves the message still displayed on the screen.

So, three questions:

1. any idea what’s wrong with it?
2. How expensive will it be to repair?
3. What is an equivalent camera that works with the star tracking gps feature and doesn’t have an Achilles heel of a wonky aperture control motor? (Which has already been repaired some years ago in this camera)

Thanks for the help.

Charles.

Also resetting to factory settings did nothing.

Finally decided to buy one, and they're nowhere on eBay or any of my normal camera shops. :/
Is it discontinued then? Anyone know where I can snag one?

How much would a repair cost, do you think? I got a new gray market 06 lens for $133 on Amazon, which seems pretty cheap compared to what I spent on the lens back when it first came out. I'm thinking probably cheaper than a repair.

Also, I'm sad that the Pentax Q has essentially gone the same way as the Pentax Auto 110 :(

I don’t even think I took a hundred photos with the lens :(

I pulled it out today to take some cool shots and it would not focus under any circumstance, and the manual focus ring does nothing.

The camera just survived an airline flight but hasn’t had any major impacts or anything. 06 worked before I left. What could be wrong?

Can't decide which camera to bring on epic motorcycle trip. K-01 or Q7?

I've ridden with both of these well padded in a tank bag before. It helps that I don't ride harleys. Smooth-running twins mostly. One single, but even that vibrates less than a harley.

Probably just going to take the Q7, just for battery anxiety's sake. Plus I really need to see if I can make it work for me... the dynamic range is lacking but otherwise it's a great camera.

The Q makes more sense. It's small, compact, and I can take all the lenses with me and it fits in a bag half the size of the K-01 with Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 lens on it.

I enjoy shooting the K-01 more, and I like the pictures it takes with that Tamron lens especially. Plus, the GPS will automatically tag my photos for me.

I have two batteries for the K-01, and five for the Q7. I have very limited space on the bike for a two-week trip that will be largely camping.

So, between battery life, compact size, and lens selection the Q7 makes the most sense by far. So why am I torn and wanting to bring my big heavy K-01/Tamron combo? Argh!

First world problems, I know. But I leave tomorrow and I'm still undecided :/

Trying to understand the Q fever

I still have two original Q bodies (one black one white) but snagged a Q7 and an 06 lens a while back, and that's a great combo for me. Ended up with photoshop too. I take the Q system with me on motorcycle trips, because it packs small and still allows me to be creative with my shooting. I really love the fisheye and pinhole lenses, but the 06 and 01 combo are my normal go-to lenses for the Q. I'm happy with the whole setup. I still like my K-01 better, but it takes up so much room in a saddlebag, especially with my Tamron 28-75, that I don't often take it into the wilderness on the bike. And it's so heavy I never, ever taking it hiking. The Q comes for that too.

Sometimes I wonder if I might have been better off with a Pentax MX-1 or an Olympus XZ-2 for lightweight travel, though.

Bahtinov mask dslr | eBay

You can buy them to fit many standard filter threads for dSLR lenses. And... I may buy another mirror lens now that I have this star tracker. That could get interesting...

The focusing at real infinity at night is damn difficult with short lenses. Doable with a 300mm, but damn difficult with the shorter lenses.

Just got one for my birthday. I tried it on all my cameras, and im looking forward to using it on my K-30 for long exposure Astro photography.

That said, I do have some questions. I seem to be missing some features. My K30 never displays a satellite image on the bottom of the info display like the manual indicates it should. I don’t have simple navigation on my K30 either.

On the K-01, which is shown as a supported camera on the Ricoh site, only the location option exists. The Astro option isn’t there.

So... is there a master list of what cameras with what firmware support which features?

Thanks!

With a K mount lens and a tripod this thing could be a pretty amazing astrophotography rig... except that it doesn’t recognize the GPS. I don’t suppose there is a firmware that gives gps support to either the Q7 or the original Q, is there?

Get replacement light seal kits. They're inexpensive, they work, and they'll last you 20 years or more. Don't hack it, do it right.

Aaaaand it looks like the 07 pinhole lens has no shutter installed. Which means the pinhole lens has a maximum exposure time of 2 seconds. For a pinhole lens. Not smart Pentax, not smart.

Question says it all. I'm curious about the images produced. I have the 07 and like it very much, and for $19 (shipped) I couldn't pass up the Holga. It's on a slow boat from Hong Kong right now, so I'm excited and want to see shots or hear opinions!

Q, Q7 or Q-S1?

Well crap. I bought the Q7 instead of the Q-S1 because I thought they were the same. The faster write times and better jpeg processing is something I'd REALLY like to have. So now... I guess I'll be looking for a Q-S1 body...

Love my two original Q bodies, but they were just too SLOOOOOOOW shot-to-shot, especially in Raw+ mode.

How does this Holga lens compare to the 07 Shield mount lens? I love my shield mount lens, and the types of images it takes. Will the Holga give me anything cool beyond what it can do? Also, with the amount of blur shown at the edges of the (very) few pics in this thread, it looks like the Holga would make a good portrait lens. Who cares about DOF when everything outside of the center of the frame is blurred anyhow? :)

Original Q-style or MX-1 stype modern camera?

I got my Q7 body from KEH!

While I like the MX-1, and the image quality compares favorably to the Fujifilm X20... the X20 has an optical viewfinder, and is in the same price range as the MX-1. The X-30 has a digital viewfinder, which isn't as great in my book, but it also has built-in wifi. It's a hard choice between those three.

Original Q-style or MX-1 stype modern camera?

Well, while scouring eBay for cameras, I found an X20 for a really good price... and then a Q7 for an equally awesome price, from a reputable camera dealer, with the box and all the extras, right down to the little baggies, and "like new" condition... which is not inaccurate. Plus a WARRANTY. So I bailed on the X20 and got the Q7 instead! I looked it up before I bought, and KEH apparently grades gear very conservatively. An "excellent" grade is akin to most people's "mint". And this was true to that. I couldn't tell that this wasn't a new camera. All the baggies were there, the box was a little worn on the outside, but everything inside looked perfect. None of the accessories had ever been opened. Cables and straps still in their ties in the baggies. VERY nice. $161 for a black one. Could have got it for $15 cheaper if I was willing to have a yellow camera. (I was not).

So my search for an X20 or MX-1 will be put off until next month. In the meantime I'll be playing with this Q7. I'm already LOVING the fisheye on the bigger sensor. It looks much more fishy! I'm excited to try the Q7 in low light and with adapted lenses, and compare it to the original Q.
