The genuine Pentax adaptor is designed to be slightly undersize so that it's a loose fit in the camera - which makes it straightforward to remove. When the lens is screwed in, the adaptor is pulled toward the lens back plate and clamps the adaptor firmly to the camera's mount.
Third-party adaptors are generally to be avoided, as typically they won't satisfy the above, and may well be prone to jamming.

Straightforward - the linked articles are of course absolutely right. The effect of diffraction at the point of focus is dependent on f-number only.

Sorry about that. If you have a K-mount lens fitted, you should find it'll work well (assuming it's 50mm and above - 28mm lenses don't work at all well using C-i-F, I've found) - make sure the camera's set to AF.S.

For lenses 50mm and above, I find the green hexagon works well, and in particular, Catch-in-Focus. This allows the camera to choose when to fire the shutter automatically, as you slowly turn the focus ring. As Jonathan Mac has said, test out which direction from which to approach focus - some cameras/lenses will give more accurate results when approaching from foreground, others from background (the former being more common in my experience).
Edit: Oops! Just realised we're talking about an M42 lens (of course!) - CiF doesn't work with anodised (non-conductive) lens bases. So, very good for most K-mount lenses, but not M42.

This "mirror-droop" is a problem to which all K10Ds are unfortunately prone, and is down to a worn-out mirror support/hinge. Since the mirror is out of kilter, it affects both auto and manual focus via the viewfinder. You've managed to compensate the AF via the debug function - you can also achieve this by taking off the bottom plate and locating the 3 adjustment screws. However, I'd leave this alone if you're happy with the AF results you're now getting. (It affects AF only, and has zero effect on the viewfinder image.)
It's not worth fiddling with shims for the focus screen in my view - just use the VF for composition and let the AF do its stuff.
Sorry to be the bringer of bad news. It's such a shame that the K10D is so afflicted, because it's a great camera otherwise. Perhaps try to find a little-used example at the right price?

I'd turn the dust-removal to "off". It's pretty useless, and I can't help feeling it risks damaging, or at least wearing-out, the stabilisation function.
