The Canon 5DMII firmware has been hacked. Check this out. Linked from here.

I'm not sure what IS possible with the K-7 & K-x hardware but it is possible to do this stuff. I think these types of hacks will become more common.

K-x eats AA batteries??

When I say a week I mean a week of a father taking pictures of his wife and kids, some of the countryside, etc...I might take 100 - 200 pictures in a week but I turn the camera on and off quite a bit. I've been shooting maybe 5 minutes worth of video in that same time period. I'm not a professional or a heavy user even. I might add I don't have an AC power cable so I've been using battery power to copy the pictures to my computer.

The re-chargeables are an off brand and the charger came with them. My first set of batteries were Energizer e2 lithium batteries and then of course the Duracell Alkalines.

Thanks so much for all of the information.

K-x eats AA batteries??

When I bought my K-x the idea of using AA batteries was appealing, mainly because I saw myself walking across the street to the jiffy mart to buy replacements. It's turned out to be quite a nightmare however. I've been through three sets of different batteries in the last month??!

The first set burned out after a couple of weeks of family shooting (short videos and stills.) I thought a firmware update would do the trick, so I updated. The next two sets went even faster?? I shot with the second set for about a week, casual use, just stills. I started shooting video one day and within 10 minutes the camera shut itself down (not because of heat, because of low power.) The next set were some re-chargeables I bought at Target. They lasted about 15 minutes of video shooting?!

I was wondering if anyone else is having this issue. I've read quite a few positive comments on battery life etc...but my experience does not bear this out. I'm starting to regret my purchase, though I love the K-x's rich feature set, and it does indeed take great stills.

No, MJPEG is certainly not a container format but AVI is (per the article you linked to by the way.) In the Kx's case it contains MJPEG. There are innumerable formats that come as Quicktimes. I use IMX, ProRes and DVCPro50 footage every day and they are all Quicktimes. The Wikipedia article on Quicktime calls it a "proprietary multimedia framework" which to me is sort of like a container format (QuickTime - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) in that a Quicktime can contain many different formats or essences of information.

I did not mean to suggest that changing the wrapper or file format would leave the essence intact or untouched but that sometimes, in the real world, we have to make hard choices about "preserving levels of brightness" or moving to a format that is easily editable.

Hydro, Stu's book must have some good information on this, no? My first thought would be to move to ProRes (if you're editing in FCP) as soon as possible. This will allow you to send to Color or Motion with less rendering and just facilitate the overall FCP workflow. I've read, though I have no practical experience, that Premiere works with AVIs much better. Finally, if you're that concernced about the camera original, get another camera.

I had some problems with the AVIs coming out of my K-x. Compressor saw them as audio only and they would not play in Quicktime. I ended up importing them into FCP and then sending them to Compressor from there (select all the clips, cntrl-click, send to Compressor.) I transcoded to ProRes and then imported those clips into a new project and edited away.

BTW, they look great, even on an HD monitor. They have moire problems in the fine detail but otherwise stand up quite well. The Achilles heal of these cameras is the sound (or lack of) and form factor (they aren't set up for video shooting.)

I'm on a 2core MacPro, OSX 10.4.11, FCP6.0.6

Great photography and solid editing. My only critique, it's a bit long. You could've clocked this in around 2 maybe 2.5 minutes and still had the same impact. I would tighten up the editing a bit but otherwise, great effort.

As a videographer and photographer my rule of thumb is to use the best equipment available, always.

1) You've answered your own question. I am a video editor and I can tell you that some do and some don't "know what they're throwing away." Honestly, very few video editors work with footage from DSLRs. It is becoming more common though. As a professional, being able to edit in a native codec is where it's at for many, many different reasons that I will not go into here.

2) Not necessarily.

3) You've just posted an online/offline workflow. I'm not aware of any others but yours seems like a good pass at it. Let us know how it goes.

In the final analysis it's more about what the finished product looks like and less about how many levels of brightness are preserved in transcoding. Naturally all editors want to work with the best footage possible but reality is quite another thing.

I've been transcoding Pentax K-x avi's to 720p24 ProRes using Compressor via FCP. I can tell you that the resulting clips look great even on the HD monitor in my studio. Personally I feel that offlining H264 or, in our case, MJPEG AVIs is pointless and a waste of time. The essence of the file is not changed when transcoding the wrapper.
